One Book, One Community 2023

Join us for our 3rd One Book, One Community book discussion. This year we are reading West with Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge. At 105 years old, Woodrow Wilson Nickel feels like he has little time left to tell the story of his unforgettable experiences as a 19 year old boy in 1938. Woody survived the Dustbowl in Texas, a hurricane, and a mystery that gives him nightmares every night.  Hoping to get to California, Woody became the driver of a rig that transported 2 giraffes from New York to the San Diego Zoo. Woody's story involves adventure, mystery, coming-of-age, first love, and the unique bond that can form between animal and man. It is inspired by the true story of two giraffes that were transported across the country in 1938 Depression Era U.S. Love, resilience, hope and the importance of memory and storytelling are all themes Rutledge explores in this book.
