Join the Fairfield County Writers Group (fairfieldcountywriters.org) on the third Saturday of the month for a monthly write-in, a three-hour productive working session where we can gather together and feed off each other's focused energies to work on our individual projects (and escape the responsibilities and chaos of our home lives for a few hours each month to get writing done).
The FCWG is comprised of authors from across the spectrum of career paths, some are just starting out while others have published and self-published completed works. We know that everyone has to start somewhere and welcome anyone who is serious about working on their writing. There is no cost for attending our writing sessions, nor are there dues for membership. Please visit our website for our events calendar and links to our Discord and Facebook groups.
Please come prepared to work quietly on your project. WiFi and power outlets are available thanks to the Ridgefield Library. Library patrons of all ages and experience levels are welcome.

Many new babysitters face fears when it comes time to begin babysitting. Will I know how to play with the children? What happens if they get hurt? How do I change a diaper?
This four hour class is designed to prepare teens to feel confident when accepting a babysitting job. It covers topics such as interviewing tips, getting paid, how children play, ages and stages, communicating with children, basic care, changing diapers, and handling emergencies. At the completion of the course, participants will take a brief quiz and certificates of completion will be distributed.
Instructor Amanda Tucker is a Kindergarten teacher and is certified in Early Childhood Education, General Education, Special Education, and holds a Master's Degree in Literacy.
Kids ages 10-18 are welcome to register for this four hour course. Since the program will occur over lunchtime participants are asked to bring a brown-bag lunch, a pencil, and notebook.

Join us for a five-part workshop led by Pamela Hart. Classes take place on Thursday evenings: 3/7, 3/14, 3/21, 4/4 and 4/11 from 6:00-7:30 PM.
The project book speaks to the writer’s need to look widely and deeply into a concern or constraint; a form or question or collection – in short, into what obsesses us. The project book allows writers to be hooked by their compulsions. We’ll look at some recent project books as we explore and interrogate our own preoccupations using visual works of art and other generative techniques. We’ll consider the scope of our particular fixation and its construction into book. Bring an obsession/passion/idea/ question/word/ image and discover your project.
Pamela Hart is writer in residence at the Katonah Museum of Art where she teaches and manages an arts-in-education program. She received a fellowship from the NEA in 2013 to complete a manuscript on the experience of military families after multiple deployments and years at war. Her book, Mothers Over Nangarhar, was published by Sarabande Books earlier this year. She is poetry editor and mentor at the Afghan Women's Writing Project.
This workshop is made possible thanks to the Friends of the Ridgefield Library.
Please register. Class size is limited so please only register if you are able to attend at least 4 sessions. By registering for the first session on March 7 you will automatically be registered for all 5 classes.FR L

Living in rural Connecticut provides me with endless inspirational subjects. I am especially fascinated by the changing reflections of light and shadows on everyday objects. Reflected glass and windows are some of my favorite subjects to paint. The transparency of watercolor makes these reflections extraordinary and luscious."-- Mary Jane Magoon

She received a fellowship from the NEA in 2013 to complete a manuscript on the experience of military families after multiple deployments and years at war. Mary Jane’s signature style is apparent in all of her watercolors. She uses saturated colors and pays special attention to light reflection, which brilliantly adds dimension and intensity to her paintings. One of her most favorite pieces is a still-life of sliced watermelons and it’s titled, Sweet and Juicy. "I like bright colors. Most of my paintings are done in bright colors. I just like it. I like the colors and the composition. I think this painting makes you happy and makes you want to bite into a fresh piece in the middle of a hot summer day.”
Mary Jane has other creative talents as well. She studied interior design at the University of Minnesota and received an associate degree in interior design at Post University. She also does interior design for her own clients. Plus, she’s a Color & Design Consultant at Rings End Lumber at the New Milford and Danbury locations and visits the store’s clients at their homes. Several of her paintings have been purchased by her residential and corporate clients in Connecticut, New York, and Michigan. PVA

In Codex (20 minute film), the filmmaker Micah Bloom documents the fate of books damaged by the massive flooding of the Souris River in Minot, ND in 2011. This investigation into the nature and transformation of the book over time and through these damaging elements chronicles a time in human history when "we are oversaturated with digital (mis)information" and offers "a creative meditation on the materiality of the book, as a unique, format of organizing knowledge."- James Romaine, professor of art history, Lander University. This program is part of Freed Formats: the book reconsidered - a series of programs focused on book arts that features art talks, exhibtions, and workshops. Attendees should come to each session with a poem they already know or with one that that they would like to learn by heart.
Levine is currently the managing director of the Sheen Center for Thought and Culture in New York City. Earlier in his career he was a practicing musician and music director for the theater, and an educator at the Savannah College of Art and Design and the Hartt School.

Award-winning Towers | Golde excels at preserving and enhancing the innate qualities of a site through a design that “grounds” a building project with extraordinary sensitivity to scale, character, and intended use. Golde will talk about specific projects from conceptual design through actual implementation.
Robert Golde’s work as a landscape architect is noted for its elegant simplicity, functional practicality, bold clarity and contextual sensitivity. Golde’s intense commitment to a collaborative design process and his ability to lead others to see the intrinsic character and value of specific sites is evidenced in every project. Golde believes that a thorough understanding of an institution’s history, culture and traditions is essential in planning for its physical future. The outstanding quality of Mr. Golde’s work and its significant impact on the public is perennially acknowledged by peer professional organizations in their annual design awards. If you have an iPhone, iPad or Mac, you have either embraced - or been mystified by - Apple’s “iCloud,” as well as its relationship to your “Apple ID.” Join us as tech tutor Michael Jay leads an interactive workshop on this powerful feature, which generates the greatest number of his Apple-related questions, yet which also enables some of the most valuable aspects of the Apple system.
Whether you’re new to Apple products, or are already comfortable with your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, this program, dedicated solely to iCloud and Apple ID’s, will help you gain more from your device. We’ll address:
What is “cloud computing”?
What is the relationship between iCloud and an Apple ID?
If your Apple ID is your email address, why isn’t the password for that email account also your Apple ID password?
How can you use iCloud to sync your PHOTOS between your devices?
What else can you use iCloud for?
Let a technology tutor and former Apple Store specialist show you the core features you should know about iCloud and your Apple ID. If you have an iPhone, iPad, and/or Mac laptop, bring your device to this lecture.
Instructor Michael Jay is a technology consultant and educator who has worked with Apple devices and other tech products professionally for over 30 years. He worked previously as an editor and project manager in Hollywood and New York. He has taught related technology at NYU graduate school and Stevens Institute of Technology, and has lectured at over a dozen public institutions. Michael is the owner of TECHsperienced, which provides personal tech tutoring.

The Jacob Jolliff Band is the next generation of bluegrass supergroups, led by one of the country's premier contemporary bluegrass mandolinists.
Before joining Yonder Mountain String Band, Jacob Jolliff founded beloved New England roots band Joy Kills Sorrow, while attending Berklee School of Music on a full scholarship. The band logged three records, hundreds of shows, and thousands of miles of worldwide touring. In 2012, Jolliff had the distinctive honor of being named the National Mandolin Championship winner. A fixture of the national bluegrass community, he has collaborated and shared the stage with Darol Anger, Sam Bush, Ronnie McCoury, Jerry Douglas, Chris Thile, and David Grisman to name a few. When Joy Kills Sorrow disbanded in 2014, Jolliff got the call to join progressive bluegrass giant Yonder Mountain String Band.
The Jacob Jolliff Band features some of the most virtuosic and innovative young pickers in the country. Jolliff continues to tour extensively with Yonder Mountain String Band year round, assembling his namesake band when his relentless touring schedules permit, for rare, not to to be missed performances. Thrown Stone Theatre Company, in partnership with TownVibe and the Ridgefield Library, present Civility at Home, a community discussion for all ages, to explore the idea of civility in private discourse through the viewpoint of two public figures from different sides of the aisle. This program is part of a series of community events Thrown Stone will present around the theme, Close To Home, building toward their third season, which features the Connecticut Premiere of Cry it Out by Molly Smith Metzler and the East Coast Premiere of Birds of North America by Anna Moench.
Most of us have family members who disagree with our political ideas. How do we nurture our personal relationships while navigating a culture that increasingly seeks to divide us? What strategies can help us find common ground? What is the proper way to respectfully disagree with a loved one? Why is that one uncle such a nuisance at Thanksgiving? This candid discussion will confront these questions and more in an effort to make everyone’s family get-togethers more enjoyable.
Facilitated by TownVibe publisher Geoffrey Morris, the panel discussion will feature State Senator Will Haskell and Harry Arora, a recent candidate for Connecticut’s 4th Congressional district. Both are known for their exemplary civility in the public sphere.
Will Haskell is a Democratic member of the Connecticut State Senate, representing District 26. He was raised in Westport, Connecticut. He graduated magna cum laude from Georgetown University in 2018. Haskell's political experience includes work for the Democratic National Committee's voter protection team. He also interned with Hillary for America and the offices of Rep. Jim Himes and Sen. Chris Murphy.
Harry Arora ran on the Republican ticket for Connecticut’s 4th congressional district in 2018. He came to the United States 25 years ago from India as a graduate school student. He has an undergraduate degree in Engineering, an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin and an MBA from Harvard University. Harry and his wife have lived in Fairfield County for the last 17 years where they are raising their three children.
The program is also part of American Creed: Community Conversations, a project of Citizen Film in partnership with the American Library Association and the National Writing Project, with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free.

Artist's reception for Emergence - an exhibition of Charles Gulbrandsen's luminous abstract field paintings. In this new series of paintings, Gulbransen explores the nature of light and luminosity - eliminating the traditional distinction between light and shadow.
He describes his paintings as "a place where space and light are not separate...where luminous vessels define and complete the other within their own shimmering atmosphere." He describes his paintings as images of radiant uncertainty and says they are more like questions than statements - asking the viewer: What is this place? Where are we now?
Although Gulbrandsen is focusing more on his abstract paintings now than on his prior work in art conservation, he once had the amazing opportunity to participate in the restoration of Grand Central's celestial mural painting in 1996. His grandfather, Charles G. Gulbrandsen, led the efforts to paint this famous ceiling in 1945.

Long fascinated by gangster legends, Rich Cohen tells the story of this notorious underworld figure, from his humble origins to the wild, globe-crossing, bacchanalian crime spree that forged his ruthlessness and his reputation, to his ultimate incarnation as a demon who terrorized lower Manhattan, at a time when pirates anchored off 14th Street.
Rich Cohen is the author of the New York Times bestsellers Tough Jews, The Avengers, Monsters, and (with Jerry Weintraub) When I Stop Talking, You’ll Know I’m Dead. He is a co-creator of the HBO series Vinyl and a contributing editor at Vanity Fair and Rolling Stone and has written for The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and Harper’s Magazine, among others. Cohen has won the Great Lakes Book Award, the Chicago Public Library’s 21st Century Award, and the ASCAP Deems Taylor Award for outstanding coverage of music. His stories have been included in The Best American Essays and The Best American Travel Writing. He lives in Connecticut.
“With its wise and erudite storytelling, Rich Cohen’s The Last Pirate of New York takes the reader on an exciting nonfiction narrative journey that transforms a grisly nineteenth-century murder into a shrewd portent of modern life. Totally unique, totally compelling, I enjoyed every page.”—Howard Blum, New York Times bestselling author of Gangland and American Lightning

The Ridgefield Library and the Ridgefield Historical Society will host a Power Point presentation and book signing by author and historian Marty Podskoch, who will discuss his new book, The Connecticut 169 Club: Your Passport and Guide to Exploring Connecticut. His new travel book Connecticut 169 Club, encourages travelers to visit all of the towns and villages of our beautiful and unique state.
Marty Podskoch was a teacher in the Catskills and came to Conn. in 2005. He decided to write a book on the Connecticut CCC camps. He traveled to over 100 towns in Conn. where he gave talks on the CCC and people shared their stories and photos. His Connecticut Civilian Conservation Corps Camps: History, Memories & Legacy of the CCC was published in 2016.
Podskoch created a book to be a guide and a passport. He got someone from each town to write a short description highlighting their town’s location, history, and interesting places to visit. Podskoch did this because local residents knew more about their town than he. The book has a space for travelers to journal about their experiences and a place to get the book stamped or signed by a resident or business. Travelers will get to know the locals and perhaps learn about a good place to eat or an interesting local attraction. In this way they get to know a lot about Connecticut and its residents.
There is no membership fee, just a desire to experience all of Connecticut. Adults and children of all ages can be members. What a great adventure for families, grandparents, and their grandchildren, or go by oneself. Most members will travel by car while others might use a bike, motorcycle, or maybe a canoe!
Please register.

In his presentation Woodstock: A 50th Anniversary Celebration Craig Harris incorporates rare recordings, archival video, insightful storytelling, group singing, and guided music-making. The August 1969 Woodstock Exposition of Music and Art continues to reverberate cultural ripples and this program will not only stir memories but provide new perspective.
Craig Harris has taught, written about, photographed, and played music for more than four decades. A master percussionist, educator, author, photographer, and the host of a popular weekly Friday night radio show in Washington, DC. His latest book Bluegrass, Newgrass, Old-time and Americana Music was published in 2018. He’s also the author of The Band: Pioneers of Americana Music (2014) and Heartbeat, Warble and the Electric Powwow: American Indian Music (2016), as well as countless music-oriented reviews, articles and photos for newspapers, magazines and websites. His passion for music, however, goes beyond the printed word. A skilled percussionist/drummer, he's performed in concert with Woodstock veterans Melanie and Rick Danko (The Band). In addition to working with an Americana group (Two Days Jeans), he’s been a member of the Gaea Star Band (with whom he co-hosts a syndicated weekly radio show) since 2014. After teaching music for more than a quarter of a century, Harris (who possesses a master's degree in education) launched his Drum Away the Blues program in 2009.

The Ridgefield Library and Books on the Common are pleased to welcome back author Elissa Altman who will talk about her new book Motherland: A Memoir of Love, Loathing, and Longing (Ballantine Hardcover / On Sale: August 6, 2019). In the book Altman asks the universal questions that have defined mothers and daughters from Demeter and Persephone to Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher. How do you care for a mother you love, but don’t necessarily like? What are the rules—and limitations—of daughterly obligation and caregiving? Can it ever end well?
Elissa and Rita have forever struggled to find their place in each other's worlds. Rita, an overreaching, makeup-addicted, narcissistic Manhattan singer couldn't be more different from Elissa, her gay, taciturn New England writer daughter. Stuck in an outrageous maelstrom of codependency, mother and daughter cannot seem to extricate themselves from the center of each other's lives. MOTHERLAND is their universal story: a kaleidoscopic journey built on the ferocity of mother-daughter love, moral obligation, and the possibility and promise of healing.

Kyle Carey performs a unique fusion of Appalachian and Celtic music she likes to call ‘Gaelic Americana’. Having learned Scottish Gaelic to the point of fluency–Kyle’s music is an expression and exploration of the deep connection between Appalachia’s Celtic roots. Many critics have likened her to being a mix of Loreena McKennitt and Alison Krauss.
Kyle has released two full-length albums, and her third The Art of Forgetting (which was recorded in Louisiana and produced by Dirk Powell) features folks like Rhiannon Giddens, John McCusker and Mike McGoldrick. The album was released last January on the World Music Network’s Riverboat Records out of London–who through Redeye in the US–charted at #9 on Billboard’s Heatseeker’s Northeast Chart. In December, PopMatters named the album one of the ’20 Best Folk Albums of 2018’
Ridgefield Folk concerts are free thanks to the Friends of the Ridgefield Library. The doors open at 1:30 PM and the shows start at 2 PM.
