Event: Author Talk - The Natural World of Winnie-the-Pooh with Kathryn Aalto

Monday September 17, 2018
7:00 PM until 8:30 PM

A. A. Milne’s classic tales, Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner, have delighted readers for nearly a century. The story’s characters -- Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, and the rest of the gang are famous, but how much do we know about the setting, the Hundred Acre Wood?

Join landscape historian and designer Kathryn Aalto as she discusses her New York Times Best Seller The Natural World of Winnie-the-Pooh: A Walk Through the Forest That Inspired the 100 Acre Wood. A popular speaker and storyteller, Kathryn takes people on an illustrated journey into one of the most iconic settings in children’s literature. Learn about Milne’s extraordinary childhood in the natural world and how he worked with illustrator E. H. Shepard. Discover places that inspired the stories along with the real forest’s rare flora and fauna.

Part travelogue, biography and natural history, this thought-provoking and memorable talk weaves art, nature and history as people consider the nature of childhood and the importance in giving our 21st-century Christopher Robins their own Hundred Acre Woods. Leave with a new understanding of how the Winnie-the-Pooh books are field guides for the free range child -- hymns to those days of "doing nothing yet learning everything."

Kathryn Aalto grew up in the San Joaquin Valley of California and was educated at the University of California at Berkeley, Western Washington University, the London College of Garden Design and the University of Bristol. She is a member of the Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment, the Garden History Society, and many other professional landscape and writing organizations. She moved to Devon, UK in 2007 with her family.

This program is cosponsored by the Library and Ridgefield Garden Club.  Books will be available for sale and signing at the event.
