Women of WWII: On the Front Lines & the Home Front
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

During World War II, American women took on many new roles, both in the military and as civilians. Beyond Rosie the Riveter and the Atomic Girls, women made incredible contributions to the war effort. One of the civilian avenues was through the American Red Cross Clubmobile program, which was essentially a mobile club, featuring doughnuts, coffee, and good old American girl-next-door friendliness, all served up at the front lines in Europe, Southeast Asia, India, and Australia - wherever the troops were to be found. Learn more about the Clubmobile program and all the ways in which American women helped win the war!

Motown: The Music That Moved The World
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

In Detroit in the 1960's Motown Records produced hits as efficiently as the Ford Motor Company produced automobiles - 110 Top Ten hits to be exact!  It was the "Sound of Young America" sung by performers like The Supremes, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder.  Using audio and visual content we'll trace the amazing musical journey from the power soul of "Dancing In The Streets" and "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" to the psychedelic soul of "Cloud Nine" and "What's Going On" to the pop soul of The Jackson 5.  Timeless music that moved us then and moves us now.

Yoga and Self-Care for Busy People
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
In an era of mounting stress and anxiety from competing demands, taking on too much at work and at home, and rushing around for everyone but yourself—it's common for self-care to fall off your to-do list, especially as a busy person. Self-care is more than taking a shower and brushing your teeth. It's taking the time to care for your mind, body, and spirit so that you can live well emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually. Drawing upon practices from Julie's book 108 Yoga and Self-Care Practices for Busy Mamas, this session will teach you practical ways to stand-up for your self-care, including yoga stretches and simple meditations, so that you can more fully enjoy your busy life.

About the Author: Julie M. Gentile is a Millennial working mama, yoga teacher at the Bloomingdale Park District, author of 108 Yoga and Self-Care Practices for Busy Mamas (MSI Press), and professional writer and editor. She has been practicing yoga and meditation for a decade and leading yoga classes since 2011. Following the Yellow Brick Road: The Life of Judy Garland
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

This June marks the 50th anniversary of Judy Garland's death in 1969, and as tribute to this Hollywood legend, historian Jim Gibbons will be here to discuss her beautiful yet tragic life.

Born on June 10, 1922 in Grand Rapids Minnesota, Frances Ethel Gumm (whose name was later changed to “Judy Garland”), was lovingly nicknamed “Baby” by her vaudevillian parents and siblings. She began performing at age 2 ½ singing “Jingle Bells” alongside her sisters. The three girls were known as the “Gumm Sisters” and later, the “Garland Sisters,” appearing in various movies, television and vaudeville shows. At age 13 in September 1935, Judy Garland signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) which began her rise to fame. However, it was not an easy road ahead of her as she was constantly criticized for her looks. Garland was told she needed to be more glamorous like the other famous female stars she went to school with such as Ava Gardner and Elizabeth Taylor. Even in the peak of Garland’s stardom, the pressure from others to be more and do more was intense until the day she died.

In his slideshow lecture, Gibbons will explain how Garland would receive worldwide fame for her role as Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz. He will explain how she went on to star in other notable movies such as Meet Me in St. Louis; The Harvey Girls; Easter Parade; and Summer Stock. Gibbons will discuss how Garland was let go from MGM in 1950 for personal struggles, yet went on to star in the Emmy-nominated television show, The Judy Garland Show and was the first female to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement. She was also awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award after her death, was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and was placed on the Top 10 Greatest Female Stars of the American Cinemas list by the American Institute.

The Moon Landing - 50th Anniversary
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

On July 20, 1969, NASA’s astronauts, Mission Commander Neil Armstrong and Pilot Buzz Aldrin, became the first Americans to land on the moon in the Apollo 11 space journey. This was, as Neil Armstrong said, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” as it ended America’s Space Race with its Cold War rival, the Soviet Union.

Historian Jim Gibbons will discuss the space goal proposed by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 and how it was fulfilled for the U.S. in 1969. Gibbons will explain how Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon with Aldrin following behind 20 minutes later. He will discuss how both men spent almost a full day on the surface of the moon, bringing back many lunar items with them, and how this launched an important part of American history.

The 50th Anniversary of The Beatles' Abbey Road
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

October 1, 2019 marks the 50th Anniversary of the release of Abbey Road - the last album the Beatles recorded.  After the turmoil of The White Album and Let It Be, the Beatles put their differences aside to record one of their most popular albums that still sounds fresh and vital today.  Each member shone brightly from Lennon's funky "Come Together" to Harrison's sublime "Something' and "Here Comes the Sun" to McCartney's galloping Side 2 Medley – a virtual rock 'n' roll symphony.  Using audio visual content, we'll review the stories behind the album's best-known songs and celebrate the Beatles final gift to music lovers all over the world.

Presented by Gary Wenstrup, who teaches Beatles courses in Continuing Education at College of DuPage and Triton College while also lecturing at libraries.

The Christmas Canvas: Paintings of the Nativity Story
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Around the holidays, the images that surround us promote holiday hours and doorbusters. This program is designed to emphasize images that are central to the meaning of the season. Imagery that deals with the nativity will be shown, discussed and compared with one another to reveal the multiple layers of meanings that can be conveyed even within the same subject matter. Various artists from different cultures and time periods will be included to provide a broad look at an important tradition in Art History. Some artists whose work will be discussed include Botticelli, Van Eyck, Tanner, Martini, Fabriano, Campin, and van der Goes.

Art Historian Jeff Mishur presents this slide lecture. Mishur is an owner of Art Excursions, a company that provides private guiding in Chicago; lectures; and boutique art and culture tours in the United States.

Grace Kelly: American Princess
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Few lives seemed so much like a movie. The talented young woman - beautiful and successful in her movie career - was swept off her feet by a real-life prince in a whirlwind romance.Their fairytale wedding in 1956 made her a princess. But beneath her cool, gracious smile, Grace Kelly was a young woman who yearned for her father's approval and worked hard as a wife and mother. In this historical portrayal, award-winning actress and historian Leslie Goddard portrays the woman who transformed from a Hollywood superstar to a real-life princess.

Sally Rand: American Sex Symbol
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Local author and historian William Hazelgrove is back to promote newest book, the very first biography of Sally Rand. She would pave the way for every sex symbol to follow from Marilyn Monroe to Lady Gaga, but in the end she would die penniless and in debt. She broke the mold in 1933, by proclaiming the female body as something beautiful and taking it out of the strip club with her ethereal fan dance. She was a poor girl from the Ozarks who ran away with a carnival, then joined the circus, and finally made it to Hollywood where Cecil B. Demille set her on the road to fame with silent movies.
