On the Run chronicles Joe’s four decades of adventures in the sport, as well as the colorful assortment of friends, coaches and colleagues he’s met along the way, including his close friendship with two of America’s greatest distance runners, Bill Rodgers and Tom Fleming, who with Joe called themselves “the Three Amigos.” Animated by the author’s dry wit and cinematic sense of detail, Martino’s “road memoir” is both informative and entertaining, and it paints an endearing portrait of New England life in the latter twentieth century.
