In 1773, towns across New England protested British taxation by destroying Bohea (black) and Hyson (green) tea, but in the 21st century we have many more options! Join Hillel Bromberg of the Tea Oasis for a gustatory journey through tea history and production to explore just how varied it can be. What was the tea of the 18th century like and how does it compare to today? This is the time to find out! Tea can be sweet, rich, buttery, and citrusy. It can wake you up and calm you down. Tea has a history that spans the globe and health benefits that will keep you going. It has been cultivated for over 4,000 years and is the second most popular drink in the world (behind water). Come spend some time getting to know tea’s delightful flavors and aromas, as well as its fascinating history, how it’s made, where it’s from, and what it can do for you. You’ll learn how to steep tea for best flavor and sample several varieties, such as a delicate white, smooth oolong, refreshing green, malty black, and a...well...we won’t give away the surprise!

New England’s female abolitionists in the first half of the nineteenth century played a large role in the development of modern American Christmas traditions. These abolitionists, led by Maria Chapman, hosted anti-slavery society Christmas Fairs – one of the earliest traditions associated with Christmas. It was at these fairs that most Americans in the first half of the nineteenth century encountered a Christmas tree. These fairs had a wide-ranging influence on our current customs, including the use of greenery in decorating and gift giving in America. Learn how these women, including some like Julia and Ellen Robbins of Lexington, promoted abolitionism while creating goods for sale as well as organizing the fairs. This helped move women out of the designated domestic sphere of the home (not without controversy) into the economy. All of this would forever change the role of women in society and how we celebrate Christmas.

Join the Lexington Lyceum Advocates in the Follen Church Sanctuary for this presentation by Ken Turino of Historic New England.

Can something be wry, aching, hysterical, evocative, provocative, fun, beautifully sung, and consummately played all at once? That would be Vance Gilbert.

An integral part of the national folk scene, Gilbert’s approach to the acoustic singer-songwriter idiom is significant. Gilbert’s compositions, while frequently employing sophisticated melodies and harmonies that attest to his jazz roots, remain sublime attestations to the storyteller’s craft. Many know Vance’s signature song, “Unfamiliar Moon,” which landed him in the second round of auditions of TV’s America’s Got Talent. Like all great artists, Vance truly happens live. In fact he developed his reputation with his jaw-dropping, diverse, funny, devastating, and gorgeous live performances.

Vance exploded onto the scene in the early ’90s, with buzz spreading quickly. Who was this multicultural arts teacher knocking them dead at open mics? After opening Shawn Colvin’s 1992 Fat City tour, he took much of America by storm. “The voice of an angel, the wit of a devil, and the guitar playing of a god,” wrote the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Vance has released 16 albums, including Somerville (Live), and Side of the Road with Ellis Paul. His latest album, The Mother of Trouble, was released in May.

(Please note, our ticketing system only allows us to sell tickets one show at a time. Tickets for our Vance Gilbert show will go on sale after our March show!)
