Selection: Exit West by Mohsin Hamid

In a country teetering on the brink of civil war, two young people meet—sensual, fiercely-independent Nadia and gentle, restrained Saeed. They embark on a furtive love affair which is intensified by the unrest churning their city, turning it into a patchwork of checkpoints and bomb blasts. The couple begins to hear whispers about doors—doors that can whisk people far away, if perilously and for a price. As the violence escalates, Nadia and Saeed decide that they no longer have a choice. Leaving their homeland and their old lives behind, they find a door and step through it together. Exit West follows these remarkable characters as they emerge into an alien and uncertain future, struggling to hold on to each other, to their past, to the very sense of who they are.

THIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN FILLED.

Broadway Musical: The Cher Show

For six straight decades, only one unstoppable force has flat-out dominated popular culture — breaking down barriers, pushing boundaries, and letting nothing and no one stand in her way. The Cher Show is her story, and it’s packed with so much Cher that it takes three women to play her: the kid starting out, the glam pop star and the icon. (Broadway.com)

Join us for an exciting trip into New York City for a matinee performance of The Cher Show. The bus will leave promptly at 9:00 a.m. from the Curé of Ars parking lot in Merrick. Seats will be in the orchestra. Lunch will be on your own before the show.

A shy college freshman, Greer Kadetsky, finds her perspectives transformed by a mentor activist who is at the center of the women’s movement. This challenges Greer to discover herself in ways that take her far from the traditional life she envisioned at the side of her boyfriend.

Meg Wolitzer will be speaking at Plainview-Old Bethpage Library on Sunday, April 7  at 2:00 p.m. Tickets to this event will be available Friday, March 1 at 9:30 a.m. through Eventbrite.com, at https://bit.ly/2VAMuFd. In the event of a sellout, overflow on-site video streaming seating tickets will be available at https://bit.ly/2RfvVLH.

Selection:  The Masterpiece by Fiona Davis

For anyone who loves New York and novels with parallel narratives, The Masterpiece by Fiona Davis will enchant you. Employed at Grand Central Terminal during the ‘20s and the ‘70s respectively, Clara and Virginia find that the art and the history of this New York landmark are what they need. When Virginia tries to find out what happened when Clara disappeared in earlier times, the two women’s  stories bring alive the challenges each faces and the  fascinating history of Grand Central.

Selection:  Midnight at the Bright Idea Bookstore by Matthew Sullivan

Lydia has a job she loves at  the Bright Ideas Bookstore. Then one of her favorite  patrons commits suicide and leaves her his small collection  of books, and her investigations lead her back to a still unsolved, close-to-home murder from her  childhood.

“This quirky debut novel will have particular  appeal for puzzle solvers and booklovers.” –Booklist.

“An intriguingly dark, twisty story and eccentric  characters make this book a standout.” –Kirkus  Reviews.
