Do you love Graphic Novels? Have you ever wanted to try your hand at creating them yourself? Learn character and page design, how to tell your own story, and create your own short graphic novel. All while discussing an assortment of graphic novels for inspiration! 

1 hour. For ages 8-13 years. Registration is required and limited.  

What is your mind full of? Join us to learn more about the true meaning of mindfulness and the benefits of yoga and breathing for your mental health. We will have resources and information on mindfulness and teachers from the CommUNITY Yoga Space in Harrisburg will join us for a yoga class. Come wearing loose or stretchy clothes that you can move in. Bring your own mat or borrow one of ours.

Join us for an evening with Chenlin Cai, an artist, activist, teacher, and Commissioner to the Pennsylvania Governor’s Advisory Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs. View some of Cai’s artworks and join in on a discussion about artistic expression, public art, and community mural-making.

Cai’s work is truly something to behold – his Landscape series places intricately minute scenes of natural beauty inside man-made objects, things you might find in the kitchen or around a biology lab. With his work, he “hopes to beautify the community and speak for the well-being of society through more diverse forms of visual art.”

Outside of these smaller confines, Cai also believes “that art can not only bring aesthetic pleasure to people, but more importantly, [that] art can be used as a means to speak for public affairs.” His critically acclaimed public mural projects promote Asian American and Pacific Islander culture and traditions and have been inspired by opinions from the community in and around Philadelphia.

Paws 2 Read encourages children of all reading levels to read to the easiest and most willing audience – a dog. Each attendee will read to a registered therapy dog for about 15 minutes. Registration for this program is by appointment. Reading sessions will be held outside as weather permits.

April 12: The Art of Letters

Across the world, letters bend and twist to tell stories. This program is an introduction to the art of Arabic calligraphy. Participants will learn the basics of Arabic script and the art it inspires by exploring and mimicking the work of artists like Nassar Mansour and Wajih Nahlé. 

May 10: The Modern Polka Dot 

The polka dot can be simple, or it can be larger than life. This program centers on the work of artists who have mastered the art of the dot. Participants will explore works of art from famed Japanese artists Yayoi Kusama and Takashi Murakami and attempt to imitate their work. 

1 hour. For ages 8-13 years. Registration is required and limited.  Register once to attend both programs.

No room for a garden at your home? No problem! Join Laurie from Penn State as she teaches us about how to grow our own plant in a container garden that’ll fit right on your countertop. All supplies will be provided. 

1 hour. For all ages. Registration is required and will be one registration for each family or team group.

Join us for an hour of Spanish conversation, facilitated by Dr. Hector Ortiz. Each month, we’ll begin our session with a short grammar lesson before branching out into discussion. Whether you speak Spanish fluently or you are just beginning to learn the language, we welcome you to come together in community and conversation.

Stop by the McCormick Riverfront Library to explore our new zSpace computers which offer an augmented reality learning experience. Discover physics, chemistry, biology and more through these innovative devices.  

2 hours. For ages 7+ years. No registration required. 

Internet Fundamentals provides attendees with a basic understanding of what the internet is, how it works, and how to use it to conduct effective searches. We’ll introduce common internet vocabulary terms, explore techniques for using search engines, and introduce the various features of Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome browsers. You will gain experience using search engines and investigating the common features found on web pages. 

1.5 hours. For ages 18+. Registration is required and limited.

Whether you can whip up a sweater in a day or you don’t know a knitting needle from a crochet hook, this class is for you. Gather your supplies and join us for a morning of learning and conversation.  

2 hours. For ages 15+. Registration is required and separate for each month. 

Sip delicious, caffeinated beverages with fellow readers as we discuss LGBTQ+ books by LGBTQ+ authors. From sci-fi and contemporary, to romance and YA, we’ll read it all, as long as it’s good and gay! 

1 hour. For ages 18+. Registration is separate each month and is recommended but not required. No purchase is necessary to attend. Location: Elementary Coffee Co., 256 North Street, Harrisburg.

Join us at the library as we celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and watch family favorite Moana, make a craft, and take another one home to continue the fun; all inspired by the rich culture and heritage of those diverse communities.

Come sip some tea and let’s talk life, especially how we persevere, how we find hope, and how we define ourselves through it all. This book club features non-fiction titles with themes of pain, loss, love, strength, and triumph. Light refreshments will be served.
