Ever wished there was a book club that featured LGBTQ+ protagonists and works by LGBTQ+ authors? We’ll read the gamut: Science Fiction, YA, Graphic Novels, Contemporary Fiction – as long as it’s good (and queer)!

Meaty by Samantha Irby

Comedian, blogger, and author Samantha Irby offers an unapologetic and hilarious exploration of all things uncomfortable about adulthood in her first published work, Meaty. Irby’s “infamous, scathing wit and poignant candor” encourage us to laugh along with her as she delves deep in this unforgettable collection of essays.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that is related to the change in seasons. For individuals with SAD, it is not uncommon to feel sad, irritated or less energetic during the winter months. During this series, we will talk about the causes of the winter blahs and ways to reverse the effects. We will also have activities that are designed to help you relax and brighten your day.

For January, let's unwind with instructor Mia Bostic in this yoga session open to all levels. This session will help anyone loosen up after a stressful day and lead them into their evening with some calm. Mia has been studying yoga for over 20 years and teaching for over 15 years. Her classes focus on connecting the breath with movement to become present in the moment and still the mind.

Your Place to Belong: Susan Orlean, Author of the Year

In January, we are spotlighting Susan Orlean’s picture book Lazy Little Loafers which is an illustrated lament from the viewpoint of a disgruntled older sibling who wonders, “Why don’t babies work?”

We know that babies are, in fact, working cognitively all the time, absorbing everything their little eyes can see, and that some of the most important developmental years happen early. It’s no secret that we are currently living through unprecedented times, and have had to find new ways to engage the young children in our lives. Dr. Hannah Mudrick, Assistant Professor of Human Development and Family Studies at Pennsylvania State University – Harrisburg, will help participants navigate social and emotional development of young children during the ongoing pandemic.
