We are excited to be able to offer several fun programs for children and families  during April School Vacation Week!

Join Wee The People for a kid-powered workshop celebrating Black identity, Black experience, and unapologetic Black JOY.  While this program is centered around celebrating Black identity, it is a program open to ALL  children and families regardless of race or ethnicity.

Kids will explore the life and work of Jean-Michel Basquiat, the world-famous artist whose paintings crowned Black American heroes as kings — musicians, athletes, writers, and revolutionaries. Kids will then dive into their own art-making with Identity Crowns, a collage activity for all ages designed to elevate our culture, heritage, and hopes for change in the world.

This series is designed to engage participants in a different kind of protest action: radical celebration of Blackness. Explore Black identity, expression, and experience through storytelling and art-making grounded in unapologetic black JOY.

Holbrook Public Library is able to host this program through a generous grant from the Holbrook Cultural Council, a local agency, funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a State Agency.

About Wee The People

Wee The People (WTP) is a Boston-based social justice project for children ages 4-12. Launched in 2015 by two Black mothers, WTP organizes free, interactive workshops and events that explore activism, resistance, and social action through the visual and performing arts: music, dance/movement, theater, graphic arts, spoken word, and storytelling.

WTP’s curriculum features originally designed, interactive games that tap into kids’ innate love of play to foster learning. Our programming also includes customized small- and large-scale events, such as sign-making meet-ups and street marches, All of our programming feature teach-ins anchored by children’s books that reflect core WTP values: empathy, equity, racial justice, and social justice.

Silent Book Club®

Leaving the house on a regular basis to indulge your passion for books is a necessary form of self-care for those who would otherwise not find the time or space to endulge in reading at home. The premise for this book club is simple. It’s a gathering of people who come to the library for the purpose of reading together. Unlike traditional book clubs, there are no mandatory reading selections, and nobody facilitates a discussion. Think of it as mocktail hour for introverts!

Join us for our 1st "Silent Book Club"!  We will spend 15-20 minutes socializing with our fellow book lovers, enjoy a mocktail or other beverage, and possibly a snack or two before we each find a cozy seat for an hour of silent reading!

Forever Young Book Club

Our Forever Young Book Club brings teens and adults together over a shared interest: Reading!
Young Adult books are a popular genre for every generation, and you don't need to be a teen to enjoy them! Join us once a month for intergenerational conversations, laughs, and snacks!

April is national poetry month and we're celebrating by reading a novel in verse!

This month's book pick is: Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds

Description:

William Holloman is ready to exact vengeance on the person who murdered his older brother, Shawn. As Will rides the elevator down from his eighth-floor apartment, a new person, who is dead, gets on each floor and tells a story about their lives, all connected to three rules of the neighborhood:

  1. Don't cry.
  2. Don't snitch.
  3. Get revenge.

Most of the ghosts' stories revolve around that third rule, wherein one person died because they killed someone who killed someone connected to their family, creating a continuous cycle of death.

The full story takes place over the course of a minute.

Ages 13+

Please read the following terms before registering!:

We will meet to discuss each book on the last Tuesday of each month from 4:00PM to 5:00PM

100% completion of the book is NOT required to join our monthly meetings (do your best!)

Readers and parents shall understand that some Book Club titles may explore literary themes related to gender, sexuality, religion, politics, violence, and other topics that may be sensitive for younger readers. Please contact the Library for further details about each month’s selection.

By registering for this program, you have agreed to the participation terms listed above and you agree to pick up your copy of this month’s book, while supplies last.

Forever Young Book Club

Teens and Adults are invited to join us once a month for our new "Forever Young" book club!

In May, we celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month and that leads up to our month's book pick..

Messy Roots: A Graphic Memoir of a Wuhanese American by Laura Gao

Description:

Messy Roots is an engaging, relatable, and at times, laugh-out-loud funny graphic novel detailing Laura Gao's own experiences immigrating from Wuhan, China to Texas at an early age. This timely and important read follows the author from childhood to young adulthood as she navigates the complex dynamics of both her cultural identity and sexuality.

Food has often been a way for activist communities to fundraise, connect, and spread the word about their cause. We'll look at the origins of the link between food and activism with the abolitionist food writers of the Civil War. We'll unpack suffrage cookbooks from the turn of the 20th century and the earliest LGBTQ cooking pamphlets from the 1906s. Finally, we'll analyze the People's Cookbook of Philadelphia, a community of organizers depicted through recipes. Lastly, we'll talk about how food is still used to connect and advocate for causes to this day.

About the author:
Sarah Lohman is a culinary historian and the author of the bestselling book Eight Flavors: The Untold Story of American Cuisine. She focuses on the history of food as a way to access the stories of diverse Americans. Her work has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and NPR. She has presented across the country, from the Smithsonian Museum of American History in Washington, DC to The Culinary Historians of Southern California. Her current project, Endangered Eating: Exploring America’s Vanishing Cuisine will be released with W.W. Norton & Co. in 2023.

The Pineapple Project: A Theater Performance!

Ideas and influences can form around gender very early on in a child's life. With years of experience working with LGBTQ+ youth who struggle with their gender, Mal, Becca, and Renee, felt it was time to create a theater piece that could help broaden the conversation as well as advocate for and validate each child's individual freedom to be who they are.

This program is geared towards children ages 3-8, although all ages are welcome to join! Register now!

Forever Young Book Club

Teens and Adults are invited to join us once a month for our new "Forever Young" book club!

June is pride month and we're celebrating with an exciting debut novel!

This month's book pick is: Dragging Mason County by Curtis Campbell

Description:

Peter Thompkins needs a public image overhaul. After a tense confrontation with one of the few other queer kids in his small-town high school, rumors about him are becoming more elaborate by the day. Meanwhile, his best friend Alan (aka teen drag queen Aggie Culture) is throwing Mason County’s debut Drag Extravaganza. Although Peter is a self-described “dragnostic,” he decides to help produce the show, hoping to prove that he isn’t a self-hating gay. In the process, he finds himself facing down angry guard dogs, angrier bigots, and a very high-strung church lady. As backlash grows, Peter begins to wonder whether he’s setting fire to his already damaged reputation and if his friendship with Alan will survive past curtain call.

Forever Young brings teens and adults together monthly to connect and chat about books! There is always plenty of discussion, laughs, and of course, snacks!

Ages 13+

Please read the following terms before registering!:
