objects_easel.png Virtual Art Exhibit: Another Story by Artist Allegra Murray Download Event Info Download Event Info Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 898-4964   jhlady@ocln.org

From July 1 - 31, the Milton Public Library will host local artist Allegra Murray in a virtual exhibit titled “Another Story.”    This talented artist creates flowers from various papers, all sourced within the community.  These three-dimensional pieces are very colorful and cool, incorporating lots of different hues and often with written words interwoven into the beautiful images.  Each piece has a theme of its own to include graphics like musical notes or a local map of Milton streets, and the fun list of embellishments goes on to create a very enjoyable and eclectic exhibit.

The artist started creating paper flowers in 2017 when she made book page flower centerpieces for a Jane Austen-themed tea at our library.  Since that time her plants and flowers have been featured in local publications such as The Patriot Ledger, South Shore Home, and more.  Her sculptures were also included in several exhibits such as the Scituate Arts Association’s “Annual Juried Show” and the Art Center East’s “In Bloom” display at which her piece called “Hope Blooms 2021” was awarded honorable mention.  She is originally from Long Island, NY and resides in Milton, MA with her husband and two sons.  She has a Bachelor of Music degree from Manhattan School of Music and a Master of Science in Arts Administration from Boston University.

Here is what Allegra says about her work:  “When a reader thinks of a favorite book, the mind goes to the complex characters, the unforgettable settings, or the timeless story woven throughout the pages. Once the last page has been read, the book is closed and it is placed back on the shelf where it remains until it is taken out again.   Through my exhibit, “Another Story,” I wish to celebrate the pages within the book which are so often hidden away when not being read. The used book pages, having been transformed into beautiful plants and flowers, bloom with the names, places, and quotes that rekindle the memory of a beloved tome.”   For commissions and more information about this artwork, please visit her website at ThePetalPeddlersShop.com or on Facebook/Instagram @thepetalpeddlersshop.

To view this online display, go to: https://miltonlibrary.libguides.com/art after July lst.  Here you can also see the many wonderful virtual art exhibits created over the course of the last year.  For questions and for more information about applying for an MPL display, Email jhlady@ocln.org

Enjoy outdoor activities and games as part of the Milton Public Library's Milton Moves program and offered in partnership with the Forbes House Museum.

"Battledore and shuttlecock" was a game similar to badminton played during the 19th century, and badminton itself traces its roots back some 2000 years to ancient China. Croquet was another outdoor lawn game that was very popular in the late 1800s. With the Forbes House Museum's ample lawn, it's easy to imagine the family enjoying these pastimes themselves, and now you can try them out too. Game equipment will be available to use for free in 20-minute intervals, from 2-5 pm on Friday, August 13. While you're waiting to play, listen to stories with an MPL librarian, learn more about the Forbes House Museum, explore its beautiful grounds, and enjoy refreshments courtesy of the Friends of the Library!

For all ages. Registration for this event is required and will open two weeks in advance of the event. When registering, please let us know how many kids and adults will be in your party.

Naturalist and Photographer Joy Marzolf will present a talk about The Netherlands this evening in a Zoom program.

To many, windmills are the iconic symbol of the Netherlands. For many centuries, the Dutch have controlled the flow of water with dikes and windmills in order to reclaim land from the sea. In more recent years, they have added vast storm barriers to protect their population from stronger storms and higher seas. While much of the land is engineered, there have been great efforts to protect the nature that remains. From year round and migratory birds to mammals, butterflies and flowers, signs of nature can be found in surprising abundance across the grasslands, forests, wetlands and seashores. Join us for a tour of the history and amazing wildlife of the Netherlands.

Advance registration is required and once signed up, a Zoom connection link will be Emailed to you on the day of the program.  We hope to see you there!

Calling all Cooks!  The Milton Public Library Cookbook Club, led by local chef Connie Spiros and Assistant Director Sara Truog, invites you to its next session on Wednesday, August 25 from 6:30-8pm.  Each club meeting will feature a selected cookbook, and members will prepare a tasty treat from the book to bring to the Library and share.  The cookbook chosen for August is Milk Street: Cookish by Christopher Kimball.

In order to participate, please take these simple steps:

  • Please register through the library events calendar. Only registered cooks will be able to attend.
  • Borrow a copy of the book from the library and choose a dish. Books are available at the Circulation Desk one month ahead. (If you borrow a cookbook but won't be able to attend the meeting, please return the cookbook so someone else can check it out. Thank you!)
  • Once you've chosen your recipe, contact Sara by email (struog@ocln.org) or phone (617-898-4951) to let her know what recipe you’ll be trying so we don't have a lot of duplication in the dishes we'll sample on meeting night!

Space is limited and advance registration is required. Registration will open on Wednesday, August 6. Once you register you will receive more details about the club.  Bon Appetit!

Milton author Rana del Kaliouby will give a virtual talk via Zoom this evening about her new book called Girl Decoded: A Scientist's Quest to Reclaim our Humanity by bringing Emotional Intelligence to Technology, published in 2020 (New York: Currency Books).  In this captivating memoir, an Egyptian American scientist and CEO provides an intimate view of her personal transformation as she followed her calling to humanize technology.  Rana el Kaliouby is a rarity in both the tech world and her native Middle East: a Muslim woman and leader in a field that is still overwhelmingly white and male.  Growing up in Egypt and Kuwait, the author was raised by a strict father who valued tradition and a mother who was one of the first female computer programmers in the Middle East.  Even before she broke ground as a scientist, she broke the rules of what it meant to be an obedient daughter and, later, an obedient wife.  This book chronicles her journey from "nice Egyptian girl" to trailblazing scientist revolutionizing Emotion AI, a field devoted to teaching machines how to decode human emotions.  But decoding her own emotions - learning to express and act on them - would provide to be the biggest challenge of all.

Rana el Kliouby is a pioneer in artificial emotional intelligence, as well as the cofounder and CEO of Affectiva, the renowned AI start-up spun off from the MIT Media Lab.  Affectiva's technology is used by more than a quarter of the companies in the Fortune Global 500.  An acclaimed TED speaker, el Kaliouby was named by Forbes to its list of "America's Top 50 Women in Tech," and Fortune included her in its list of "40 Under 40."

Advance registration is required and once signed up, a Zoom connection link will be Emailed to you.   This event will be hosted by Library Director Will Adamczyk, and is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.  We hope you will join us for a fascinating program!

When your immune system is working properly, you don't even notice it - but it's constantly protecting you from bacteria, viruses, and toxins, and removing foreign bodies and malignant cells from your system.  Feeding your body adaptogenic herbs can help keep your immune system strong!   Frequent exposure to negative emotions may also have an important impact on the functioning of the immune system.  So, in this year that hasn't sparked much joy, it's imperative to build a vigorous immune system.

In this online program given by Ehris Jancz-Urban and Velya Urban from the Grounded Goodwife company in Connecticut,  learn how to make these wonderful natural and holistic remedies:

- Berry Healthy Herbal Tea Blend

- Magic Mushroom Mix (hot chocolate with benefits)

- Elderberry Syrup

You may remember these two presenters from a fun program offered by the Milton Public Library in March of 2020 called "Suffragettes in Corselettes."  They are a mother/daughter team who bring a lot of enthusiasm and positive emotion to their presentations, and we know you will enjoy this one!  The Grounded Goodwife consists of a zany teacher and a grounded green herbalist who have joined forces to create a wonderful connection with audiences as they discuss entertaining historical topics and herbs to help treat health concerns.  Their delivery is funny and frank, and for more info. about them go to this website:  https://groundedgoodwife.com    We hope you will join us for this enoyable and educational talk.

How do you get a book deal by a traditional publisher? As you contemplate writing and publishing your book, there are things to know about story, audience, and the industry before you begin. Joan F. Smith, the 2021 Writer-in-Residence and author of The Half-Orphan's Handbook and the forthcoming It Ends with December both published by Macmillan, will give a twenty-five minute talk, followed by an open question and answer period.

Please join the Milton Cemetery and the Milton Public Library for a walking tour of the Cemetery! We will focus on the lives of "permanent residents" who now call the Cemetery home.

We will meet in the parking lot of the Library, and walk from there to the Cemetery - then return to the Library post-tour. Needed to participate: a mask, walking shoes and an adventurous spirit. Registration is required and will open three weeks before the program.

Local author Caroline Kautsire will discuss her new book virtually via Zoom this evening.  Hailing from Weymouth, MA, Professor Kautsire teaches English at Bunker Hill Community College and has lived in America for 17 years.  She is also a community theater actress and a poet.  She uses her voice to advocate for change, to inspire, and to give people hope.  She has much wise insight to share with our audience this evening, and we hope you will join us!  You can read her book called: What Kind of Girl?: An African Child Caught Between Two Worlds (Gardners Books, c2020) by going to our website, clicking on "catalog" from the main page and placing a hold on the title.  You can also call the Reference Dept. at (617) 898-4964 to request a reserve.  This is a wonderful read and more details will follow here soon.

Here is a summary about the book:  "For Caroline, being a girl is already confusing, and growing up in the small African country of Malawi, she is constantly asked the question, "What kind of girl behaves this way?"  With a thousand cultural ideas flooding ino her head from American TV and movies, she struggles to fit into the traditional African society she was born into.  Instead, she chooses to stand out by taking risks that are curious beyond what is proper, leading to disapproval and harsh consequences.  At 9 years old, she finds herself enrolled in a high school at a boarding school far from her home and parents.  Alone, she must finally answer the question, "What kind of girl are you?:" for herself."

"[This]...is a sweeping coming of age story about a girl in Malawi who must tangle with the gender restrictions, religious institutions, American cultural attitudes, and African traditions that seek to define who she can be as a woman.  It is also a tale of how one girl's story in a distant country in Africa can become all of our stories."

Advance registration is required and will open 3 weeks before this program.

This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.

Fashion expert and college instructor Karen Antonowicz returns with another fun talk about fashion choices by our country's first ladies!  During the course of history, the First Ladies of America have been watched, admired, copied, sometimes criticized, and followed for their fashion and style.  Join us for a look at the clothing and accessories worn by our presidents' wives, as we journey through time from our earliest first lady to our current president's wife, Jill Biden.  We will examine the ladies who changed the course of fashion as well as those who had little or no effect whatsoever.

Ms. Antonowicz has a Masters from the University of Rhode Island and has taught the History of Fashion and other college courses for 13 years.  For 5 years, she and her husband Mike ran Nostalgia Antiques & Collectibles in Rhode Island, and she speaks about the subject often at various organizations.  Karen's Vermont Company, Spirits of Fashion, is the vehicle for producing lectures and workshops on all eras of the history of fashion.

Advance registration is required for this Zoom event; once signed up here, a Zoom connection link will be Emailed to you on the day of the program.  This presentation is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to all.  Please join us for a fun and educational evening!

In this virtual presentation, storyteller and actor Lou Del Bianco portrays his grandfather, Luigi Del Bianco, and talks about his unsung contribution as chief carver on our nation's greatest memorial, Mount Rushmore.   Lou uses authentic photos, timelines and primary source documents to bring Luigi's story to life.  Now a published book authored by Lou, Out of Rushmore's Shadow is a dramatic touching story about Luigi's legacy and the immigrant struggle.   After 70 years, the "story in stone" will now be shared for years to come!

His grandfather Luigi was born on a ship near Le Havre, France, on May 8, 1892, to Vincenzo and Osvalda Del Bianco, who were returning from the United States to Italy.  He showed interest in carving at a young age, and spent time in Austria and Venice studying the art.  When he was 18 years old he left for America, arriving in Barre, Vermont.  When World War I broke out, Bianco returned to Italy and fought for his home country, eventually returning to Vermont in 1920.  After being introduced to Mount Rushmore deisgner Gutzon Borglum, he began working at his studio.  Borglum said about Luigi:  "He is the only intelligent, efficient stone carver on the work who understands the language of the sculptor."  On September 16, 2017, the National Park Service unveiled a memorial plaque at Mount Rushmore.  The plaque acknowledgd Luigi Del Bianco's crucial role as the only chief carver on the work.

Lou del Bianco is an actor, storyteller, and musician, and has been working with audiences of all ages since 1982.  According to the New York Times, Lou's dramatic approach to storytelling "puts pow into passivity!"  He has performed all over the country, from Chicago to Carnegie Hall.  He has been an artist-in-residence for 17 years and has worked in many schools alongside teachers to help improve literacy in the classroom.  Please join us for his fascinating story via Zoom!

Advanced registration is required and once signed up, a Zoom connection link will be Emailed to you.  This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.
