2022 was Prison Book Program's 50th anniversary and for decades, they have been grateful recipients of many pieces of amazing artwork.  Typically incarcerated individuals send these paintings and more to the Prison Book Program as a token of gratitude for a shipment of books they have sent to them.  This will be an exhibit of 18 of the best pieces of framed artwork which will be shown in our Wotiz Gallery, although these pieces are not for sale.  These artists are self-taught and many of their works of art are book-themed.  The Prison Book Program adminstrators just want people to view these lovely pieces and enjoy them.  Please come to the Milton Public Library during the month of February to see this incredible display by some very talented artists.

And for more information about displaying your art at the MPL, please Email jhlady@milton.ocln.org or call the Reference Dept. at (617) 898-4964.  We hope you might come visit us this month for a unique viewing experience!

This will be a free screening of the film called: "Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World."    This movie was produced in 2023 and is not be missed, if you have not yet seen it.

It is rated PG-13 (for sports-related violence and some kissing) so is not appropriate for young children.  It stars Khris Davis, Jasmine Mathews, and Sullivan Jones, and is direcfed by George Tillman, Jr.  The running time is: 2 hours, 9 minutes.

George Foreman aspired to overcome significant odds and achived greatness in the sport of boxing.  Fueled by an impoverished childhood, Mr. Foreman channeled his anger into becoming an Olympic Gold medalist and World Heavyweight Champion, followed by a near-death experience that took him from the boxing ring to the pulpit.

The athlete has said this about his career: "Anger was my answer to everything.  I couldn't stop myself from fighting.  It was the only thing I did well."  Please come view the compelling story of an amazing biography at this free program!

This event is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library. and is free and open to all.

    Contact: Jean Hlady`   617-898-4964   jhlady@milton.ocln.org

This ongoing program will be a one-hour in person gentle vinyasa flow Yoga class with instructor Marianne Zullas.  It is designed to create movement and space in the body.  Students will practice breathing techniques, asanas (yoga poses), and will also be introduced to exercises that will open some of the meridian pathways in the body to create a better flow of energy.  This class ends with a relaxing guided meditation.  The program is appropriate for ages 13 and up, and some knowledge of yoga is recommended, but not required.  Space is limited for this enjoyable event.  Each student must bring with them a a yoga mat, a blanket, and a water bottle.

Marianne Zullas is a registered 500-hour yoga teacher and the Program Assistant for Hands to Heart Center, a non-profit organization that shares the healing practice with people affected by addition, poverty, and trauma in the greater Boston area.

The mind and body connection has been a passion of Marianne's since childhood.  Her goal is to offer her students the opportunity to dissociate from the distractions of overburdened thinking in order to be present in the moment.  She wants to learn about each of her students, including their cultures, their backgrounds, and their stories, so she can better help them on their personal yoga journeys.  During her free time, Marianne loves to spend time with her family, cook healthy meals, walk in nature and write poems.

We hope you might join her for a relaxing and informative hour!

Advance registration is required here and for questions, contact Jean Hlady, Head of Adult Services/Reference, at jbhlady@ocln.org or call (617) 898-4964. This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to all.

    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 898-4964   jhlady@milton.ocln.org

This will be an in person presentation by Historian Bob Begin about the history and life of the English explorer Lawrence of Arabia, and about the Middle Eastern countries in which he traveled over his career, to foster cooperation and peace.

During World War I, the Middle East was of prime importance to the British Empire. The Suez Canal was critical as a lifeline to India, the "jewel in the Crown". Also, it was the gateway to the Mediterranean which England viewed as "her private lake". Much of this region was under the control of the Ottoman Empire. As war approached England sought to sway the Arabs to leave the Turks and join the Allies forces. As an incentive, they alluded to giving the Arabs control of any lands they helped to liberate at the end of the war.
Enter a young, idealized English archeology student, T.E. Lawrence. He was completely taken with the lure and mystery of the East. He became known and accepted as a friend, a man of wisdom who cared for them. He would become the link between Arab and English leadership in the struggle against the   Ottomans. He was not alone in this role; another English person, also in love with Arab culture would join him. An intrepid woman who would accept no limitations, Gertrude Bell, would devote much of her life to helping the Arabs gain their freedom.   This is a story diplomacy, false promises, and a quest for Empire. Even today, we still feel the negative cost of decisions made then.

Bob Begin is an avid history fan and devotes his research to interesting and inspiring topics from American chronology.  He grew up in Lewiston, ME, graduated from Babson College in 1965, and then served 2 years in the Army - both stateside and a little while in Panama.  He then moved to Boston and got a job with St. Regis Paper Company, and worked there for 35 years, eventually as Logistics manager.  He married in 1967 and started a family, but always continued his thirst for history, particularly naval history.  Now we all have the pleasure of enjoying his accessible and enthusiastic programs about interesting historical topics!

Please join us for this fascinating talk by Mr. Begin.    No advance registration is required to attend - just come and bring your friends and family (and all the history buffs you know)!

This program is kindly supported by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to all.    For any questions, Email jhlady@milton.ocln.org or call the Reference Dept. at (617) 898-4964.

The trio plays a range of reels, jigs, hornpipes, and slides.  The tunes originate from all over Ireland, and some were written by Irish exiles in the United States.

Irish historian and musician Sean Murphy will give a one-hour virtual talk via Zoom all about the wonderful country of Ireland and its long and storied history.  The history of Ireland begins 430 million years ago when 3 super-continents collided.  When they eventually separated again, they left behind some land masses and one of those became Ireland.  At this time Ireland was in the southern hemisphere vlose to where Australia is today.

This presentation explores a number of topics, for example:

- What was going on prior to 430 million years ago- How and when did Ireland move across the equator to where it is today?

- What characteristics has Ireland had over the millions of years?

- When did people arrive in Ireland and what do we know about them?

- Who were the "Gaels?"

- How and why did Ireland become Christanized?

- When and why did the Vikings invade?

- When and why did the Normans make their conquest of Ireland?

- How did the Tudor and Cromwellian conquests affect the Ireland of today?

- Why was there a Great Hunger/Famine in the 1840s?

- How did the struggle for national independence evolve?

Advance registration is required here to receive the Zoom link.  We hope you will join host Jean Hlady for a fascinating talk with our expert historian Sean Murphy, to learn all about the country he loves!

This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to all.

Peonies: Love of My Life

Go back in time to the origin of peonies and learn a bit about their history. The “how to” part of this presentation will teach you to select, install, care for and divide these beautiful and much-loved plants. Then sit back and feast your eyes on a colorful photographic showcase of the many different varieties and types of peonies.

Christine Paxhia has been a Massachusetts Master Gardener since 2012. Her appreciation and admiration for “growing things” started as a child on woodland hikes with her mother. At the age of ten she saw her first peony; today her Milton home garden is filled with 38 varieties (and growing!). A member of the Milton Garden Club, Christine is a Garden Club of America Photography Judge. She is the MMGA’s Project Manager for the Fletcher Steele Garden, Milton, which is home to an impressive peony collection. Christine is a graduate of the MMGA Speakers Bureau Training Program.

There will be a free screening of the movie called:"Mrs. Paris Goes to Paris" this evening starting at 6:30 PM.  This is a fun and very entertaining film which was produced in 2022.  This historical comedy/drama was directed and produced by Anthony Fabian, from a screenplay he wrote with Carroll Cartwright, Keith Thompson, and Olivia Hetreed.  The movie stars Lesley Manville, Isabelle Huppert, and other great actors, and it won a British Independent Film Award (BIFA) and received a nomination for an Academy Award and a BAFTA Award for Best Costume Design.  It is rated PG (for smoking and some language), and the running time is 115 minutes.

In London in 1957, Mrs. Ada Harris, a widowed cleaning lady, becomes obsessed with a client's haute couture Dior dress, and longs for a similar dress of her own.  After unexpectedly receiving a war widow's pension, she travels to Paris to try to purchase one.  She stumbles into a showing of Dior's 10th-anniversary collection and is befriended by Andre, the Dior accountant, and Natasha, a Dior model.  However, the Dior director, Claudine, resents Ada's instrusion into the exclusive world of haute couture and initially declines to accept Ada as a client.  Fotunately for Ada, Dior has fallen on hard times and the company eventually agrees to accept a commission for payment in cash.  Ada tries to order a red dress, but a high-profile client orders it before her, and she has to make do with a different style, in green.   While in Paris for fittings, she stays with Andre and encourages him to express his affection for Natasha, who shares his interest in existential philosophy.  A whole lot of unexpected events ensue in this fanciful story where you will meet some very lovable characters!  We hope you will consider joining us, and we encourage you to bring a snack too...!

This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and you do not need to sign up - just come.   Questions?  Email jhlady@milton.ocln.org or call the Reference Dept. at (617) 898-4964.  We hope to see you there!

This will be a craft workshop for adults with Pop-up Art School to paint a cherry tree using a technique called "Pointillism."  Let's create a stunning tree painting using this technique which originated during the Impressionist era and involves using dots of different colors to create an impression of flowers and grass.  Start with a brush to outline the tree and background, then add colors and details using dots.  This will give your painting a beautiful and unique texture.  This is a very fun activity for all you artists out there and you get to take home your lovely work!  Please note that this workshop will start a bit later than usual, at 2:30 PM and will run for 90 minutes.

Advance registration is required to attend, and space is limited, so please sign up here.  One reminder will be sent before the class.  We hope you might join us!

This will be a travel talk with world traveller Barry Pell to be held in person.  In this program, the speaker takes you on a photographic journey to the lesser known parts of two extraordinary South American countries - Argentina and Ecuador.  The rural north of Argentina is filled with spectacular multi-colored rock formations towering over "quebrada" canyons, where winding roads access traditional settlements of Inca descendants.  Ecuador's vibrant old town in its capital, Quito, is filled with remarkable Spanish colonial architecture.  The lesser visited north of Ecuador contains villages with sprawling markets of vibrant colors, a deeply religious indigenous population, and an extraordinary cloud forest with dramatic scenery and rare bird life.

Barry Pell is a world traveller and photojournalist.  He has traveled widely over five decades, visiting and documenting landscapes and cultures in nearly 170 countries on all continents.  Mr. Pell has also lived and traveled in China, Eastern Europe, North Africa, and South America.  He currently lectures on international cultures at schools, universities and institutions in the Boston area.  This program will be illustrated by Barry's wonderful photographic images for all to enjoy.

No advance registration is required to attend - please just come and bring any travel fans along!  This event is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to all.  We hope you might join us for a fascinating program!

Prolific author Anthony Sammarco will return to the Keys Community Room this evening at 7 PM to present a talk about his book called: The Other Red Line: Washington Street, from Scollay Square to the Combat Zone

The Other Red Line is literally the connecting point between Scollay Square to the Combat Zone, the two preeminent adult entertainment districts in Boston.  With burlesque houses such as the Old Howard and the Crawford House, movie palaces began to open, showing silent films accompanied by a pianist, news reels and comedy acts.  The New Palace Theatre, the Star Theatre, the Theatre Comique and the Scollay Square Olympia offered vaudeville as well as silent films, which were a novelty at the time.  With so many people seeking entertainment in Scollay Square, restaurants, bars and sandwich shops offred an entertaining evening out, and it became a destination.

Burlesque was King, and the annointed Queens of Burlesque danced at both the Crawford House and the Old Howard, as well as similar clubs, which were renowned not just in Boston, but incredibly even around the world, and had well-known performers who were beloved by their audience.  However, so too was the Combat Zone, a vibrant area that beckoned Bostonians and service men for lurid entertainment.  As Scollay Square's allure waned in the late 1950s, that of the Combat Zone took on a new shine in the 1960s, albeit a tawdry and garish shine that tried to emulate the other, but quickly devolved into a seedy, gritty place that offere vulgar and graphic entertainment.  With bars, strip clubs and theaters beginning to show adult X-rated movies, the area increasingly became a place that one either went out ot his way to avoid or found so alluring that the inevitability of joining in the irreverent fun of it quickly overcame one's reservations.

This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to all.  No signup is required to attend - just please come and bring your friends and history buffs with you!

Please note that this presentation does include some images of an adult nature.

This will be an in person presentation by movie historian and expert Frank Mandoza called "Out of the Shadow, into the Spotlight: Hollywood's History with the LGBT Community."

For over a century, Hollywood and the films it produces have had a troubled history with both onscreen depictions and the real-life interactions with the LGBTQ+ community.  This program explores not only the ongoing evolution of this dynamic before, during, and after the cameras roll, but also different portrayals of the LGBTQ+ experience in films of all genres, both past and present.

No signup is required to participate - just come in person and bring your friends!

This event is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to all, although geared to adults and may not be appropriate for children.

There will be a free screening of the movie called: "Gran Turismo - From Gamer to Racer" this evening starting at 6:30 PM.    This is a 2023 American biographical sports drama directed by Neill Blomkamp from a screenplay by Jason Hall and Zach Baylin.  It is based on the racing simulation video game of the same name, but tells the true story of British teenager Jann Mardenborough, a teenage Gran Turismo player who became a professional racing car driver.  It stars Archie Madekwe as Mardenborough alongside David Habour, Orlando Bloom, Darren Barnet, Geri Halliwell Horner, and Djimon Hounsou.  Due to intense action and some strong language, this film is rated PG-13 so is suitable for teens and for adults, but not suitable for children.  Racing fans will love it!  The running time is 134 minutes.

Following a pitch by marketing executive Danny Moore, Nismo, the motorsport division of Nissan, establishes the GT Academy to recruit skilled players of the racing simulator "Gran Turismo" and turn them into real racing drivers.  Danny recruits former driver-turned-mechanic Jack Salter to train the players.  Jack is initially hesitant but accepts after tiring of the arrogance of his team's driver, Nicholas Capa.  Meanwhile, Jann Mardenborough, a teenage clothing store employee and gamer from Cardiff, Wales, is an avid player of the simulator and wants to become a racing driver, despite the disapproval of his former footballer father, Steve Mardenborough.  One day, Jann learns he is eligible for a qualification race to join the GT Academy after setting a time record for a particular track.  The night before his race, Jann is invited by his brother Coby to a party, and the brothers take their parents' car.  Jan flirts with a young woman named Audrey whom he develops a crush on.  The gathering is disbanded after the police arrive, and Jann initiates a pursuit after driving away when their friends are pulled over.  This film draws the viewer into the fascinating world of race car drivers and you will learn all about the incredible life of this young man who excels at the sport.  The real Jann Mardenborough completed over 200 races and serves as his own stunt double in the movie.  We hope you will come to view it this evening for a "thrilling ride," and please bring any race car fans with you!  No signup is required to attend, so just come and we encourage you to bring along a snack too..!

This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.  Questions?  Email jhlady@milton.ocln.org or call the Reference Dept. at (617) 898-4964.  We hope to see you there.

Join us this evening for a one-hour gentle fluid yoga class with instructor Sheila Armstrong starting at 7 PM in the Keys Community Room.  We will practice asanas (yoga poses) and breathing techniques to come into the present moment, and create more space in our minds and bodies.  Please dress comfortably and bring a yoga mat and a water bottle, and anything else that might make you more comfortable during class - a towel or blanket, blocks (if you have them), or a strap.  Masks are optional and this program is suitable for ages 13 and up.

Sheila lives in Milton and is a 200-hour registered yoga instructor and a certified Reiki healer.  Her love of yoga started in the late 1990s when she was looking for a way to get grounded after finishing college and starting a new job as a middle school teacher.  She believes that anyone can benefit from the calm and presence gained while practicing yoga, and hopes to help people take these benefits with them into their lives off the mat as well.

You must register in advance to attend so please sign up here, and a reminder Email will be sent to you a day or so before the class.  Registration opens about 3 weeks beforehand.

On Saturday, May 11, at 10am, the Friends of the Milton Library will host our second annual Clothing Swap event in the Keys Room on the lower level of the Library.
By swapping, we keep items with "plenty of life left" in our community and out of landfills or textile recycling bins.   To keep the process manageable, this swap will focus only on women's items.

Here's how it works:
  • Register in advance! Registration is required and will open two weeks prior to the event.
  • Starting at 10am on Swap Day, participants bring 5 to 10 items to the Keys Room, and with the help of volunteers, place them in the appropriate well-marked sections:  tops, bottoms, dresses, outer wear, and accessories. We will need a few minutes to set up the room. While you wait you can peruse the Friends Book Shop.
  • At 10:30am, swappers can start shopping for the same number of items you brought.

To make this event a success, we ask you to bring ONLY items that you would give to a friend.
No shoes, no items that are stained, torn or requiring repair.

Any items left over will be taken by a volunteer and donated to Interfaith Social Services Bureau Drawer thrift shop.

The Massachusetts Library Collaborative’s 50+ Job Seekers Group meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month, from 9:30-11:30 via Zoom. You do need to sign up for these helpful virtual sessions individually at the MPL events list by date.

If you are unemployed and actively looking, underemployed, seeking a new career direction, re-entering the job market after a long employment gap, or recently retired and looking for your “Encore Career,” this networking group program is perfect for you!  Remember, 85% of jobs are found through networking!

Join us in a professional forum for networking with peers in a safe and comfortable environment conducive to developing new relationships and developing skills and strategies to help in your career transition.  Each meeting features a new topic.  Meetings include a presentation and interactive workshop on topics relevant to career transition, guest speakers, access to hiring managers, small group breakout rooms to network, and 1-on-1 coaching guidance.  Participating on a regular basis will give job seekers the many tools and strategies needed for a successful job search.

Each biweekly meeting is facilitated by Deborah Hope, MBA, PCIC, an experienced executive career coach.  Deborah is a former Fortune 500 executive, investment banker and entrepreneur.  She transitioned to executive coaching over 12 years ago.  Deborah has coached with Harvard Business School Executive Education programs and the Massachusetts Conference for Women.  She has been trained or certified in a variety of coaching models and assessment tools.  Deborah has facilitated 50+ job seekers networking groups since 2016.

This will be an in person travel/nature talk with naturalist and animal expert Joy Marzolf, called: "On Safari in Tanzania: Wildlife of Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater - Lions, Leopards, Rhinos and more.".  Discover the amazing wildlife of the plains of Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti !!  Prides of lions can be found among the grasses, including large males and mothers with small playful cubs, causing grazers like impala, gazelle, and zebra to gather in herds for protection.

Some, like the leopard and rhino, are solitary and a rare and exciting find.  In the trees above, weaver birds can be seen constantly working on new nests, while larger birds like the spectacular gray crowned crane and enormous ostrich strut among the grasses,  Water draws many animals including hippos, flocks of flamingos and wading birds.  In the Serengeti, large rocky outcrops dotted with trees  create the perfect habitat for small animals like the hyrax, while nearby in the grassland one might see their cloest relative, the African elephant.  These famous National parks often enable visitors to see the "big five" animals and man more.  We hope you might join us in the Keys Community Room for this fascinating presentation, to include Joy's incredible photographs of her African experience!

This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to all.  No signup is required to attend - just come join us and this event is suitable for all ages too.
