Blake Patterson returns with a collection of his uniquely beautiful handmade segmented wood bowls. Mr. Patterson is a largely self-taught 'segmenter', one of the 1% of non-traditional wood turners. He begins with dry, stable wood, preferring to re-use wood that might otherwise become landfill: old furniture, used building material, cabinet-shop scraps, etc. Using a miter saw, he cuts strips of wood into pie shapes to form disks for the bottoms and tops of his bowls, and trapezoid shapes to form rings. This requires precise angles and accurate dimensions. He alternates wood pieces to create patterns and decorations such as checkerboards, diamonds, and concentric squares. After attaching the segments together the bowl is lathe-turned, inside and out, sanded, and finished. This year, Blake has added some unexpected vibrancy to some of his creations, with colored epoxy. He hopes you enjoy them!

All the bowls are for sale. To purchase, contact the artist with the number of the bowl you would like, and he will reserve it for you and arrange for payment and delivery at month's end. You can find a list of the bowls by number and price at the Circulation desk. Mr. Patterson donates a portion of his proceeds to the Monmouth County Library. In addition to the pieces at the library, he has more wood-art bowls available at his Tinton Falls home/studio.

Blake's Bowls are on display in the Library Lobby for the month of August. Come and see this amazing collection!

The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins

The Moonstone was first published in 1868 and is considered the granddaddy of all detective novels. It has stood the test of time and has all the elements of a great mystery...a complex crime, lots of suspects, and murder! The story centers on the Moonstone, a diamond taken from an Indian shrine, and brought back to England by a British officer. Of course, it has a curse on it, as well as an ingenious inspector determined to get to the truth. It is still a page-turner!

All Good Children by Catherine Austen

Maxwell 'Max' Connors lives in the planned community of New Middletown, one of the few safe havens after an economic and ecologic collapse. When the town's students receive a treatment that turns them into obedient, well-mannered, lifeless citizens, Max realizes he must find a way to save his family and friends from becoming mindless drones. This dystopian novel is action-packed, entertaining, and will provoke discussions about civil liberties, resistance, and conformity.

Moderated by Trish Shrodo.

Books will be available on Ebsco Books. Use the following link to bring you to the login page: https://bit.ly/3cOdybk. There is a limited number of physical books available through your local Monmouth County Library Branch.
