Attention Parent/Guardian: It is highly recommended that your teen is responsible for all correspondence regarding the Teen Volunteer Program; starting with the review submission process and continuing throughout their volunteer service. This program strives to prepare your child for his/her first job. We feel that the more responsibility that volunteers have in the successful execution of completing their service the better prepared he or she will be to apply for jobs and enter the workforce. When at all possible, please ask your teen to call, email, organize, and initiate!  Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. Please note that the books in our teen sections cover a wide range of ages and vary in content and maturity level. Parents and/or guardians have the right and responsibility to determine their own children’s access to library resources.

Virtual History Book Discussion and Author Talk: Who Tells Your Story?

Madhouse at The End of The Earth: The Belgica's Journey into The Dark Antarctic Night by Julian Sancton

Meet the Author: Julian Sanction
Julian Sancton is a senior features editor at Departures magazine, where he writes about culture and travel. His work has appeared in Vanity Fair, Esquire, The New Yorker, Wired, and Playboy, among other publications. He has reported from every continent, including Antarctica, which he first visited while researching his book. Find a recent excerpt here: https://www.vanityfair.com/style/2021/04/exclusive-excerpt-an-icy-death-at-the-bottom-of-the-world

****************************

In August 1897, the young Belgian commandant Adrien de Gerlache set sail for a three-year expedition aboard the good ship Belgica, destination the icy continent of Antarctica. In Madhouse at the End of the Earth, Julian Sancton unfolds an epic story of adventure and horror for the ages. Drawing on the diaries and journals of the Belgica’s crew and with exclusive access to the ship’s logbook, Sancton brings us the story of human extremes, one so remarkable that even today NASA studies it for research on isolation for future missions to Mars. Equal parts maritime thriller and gothic horror, Madhouse at the End of the Earth is an unforgettable journey into the deep.

What Lies Beneath: Recent Archaeological Investigations at Marlpit Hall and the Allen House

Presented by the Monmouth County Historical Association; Co-sponsored by the Monmouth County Library

Dr. Rich Veit will be giving us a glimpse into an actual archaeological dig! Discover what secrets this fascinating process can reveal. Recent excavations at historic Marlpit Hall in Middletown, both interior and exterior, have yielded amazing information about those who lived there long ago. Dr. Richard F. Veit is a Professor of Anthropology and Interim Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Monmouth University. He is the President of the Middle Atlantic Archaeological Conference, and his research has been featured on NPR, in Archaeology Magazine and at 2014's TEDx Navesink. He has authored five books, which have received awards from the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office, New Jersey Academic Studies Alliance, and the New Jersey Center for the Book at Rutgers University. He serves on the New Jersey Historical Commission and on the boards of the Council for Northeast Historical Archaeology, Crossroads of the American Revolution, and the Archaeological Society of New Jersey.
