"A Christmas Memory" is a short, largely autobiographical story by Truman Capote, that was originally published in Mademoiselle Magazine in December 1956. The story takes place in the 1930's during a time in which Capote was living with distant relatives in rural Alabama and focuses on country life, friendship, and the joy of giving during the Christmas season, but also poignantly touches on loneliness and loss. It is now considered a holiday classic and has been broadcasted, recorded, filmed, and staged multiple times in award winning productions. Join us as The Ocean Players present a reading of "A Christmas Memory."

Through centuries of art, much of it now in East Coast museums, we'll explore how a Turkish bishop evolved into one of Christianity’s most beloved saints. Then in American artwork we'll see Nicholas change again—into Santa Claus.

From an early age, Dr. Michael Norris discovered how powerful the influence of art can be. He earned a BA in Classics from U.C. San Diego, and an MA in Classics and Ph.D. in Art History at U.C. Santa Barbara.  With over 20 years of teaching at the Cloisters Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and other global lecture destinations, Michael "tries to find the story in the artwork" and shares his appreciation with interested audiences.

How often do you get to hear music and then have a high-energy conversation about its role in historical traditions, its cultural influence, and its style and technique?

Until the early 20th century, the fiddle was the centerpiece of American folk music and folk culture.  In this interactive presentation, Matthew Backes explores the origins and history of American fiddle music -- covering a range of styles and modes of expression -- and raises along the way big questions about musical tradition and music making.

Matthew Backes is passionate about stringed instruments; he started playing at 15 years old.  When he's not fiddling, singing, or picking mandolin or guitar, Backes teaches American Studies at Rutgers University.  A historian that holds a Ph.D. in American History, Backes combines his passion for fiddling with his fascination with historical studies as often as he can.  He also perfoms regularly with his bluegrass band, The Magnolia Street String Band.

This program is funded by the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, and has been made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the New Jersey Council for the Humanities (NJCH).  Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of the NEH or NJCH.

Words of Love is renowned filmmaker Nick Broomfield's most personal and romantic film of his storied career. The documentary starts on the Greek island of Hydra in 1960, where Leonard Cohen, then a struggling and unknown fiction writer, and Marianne Ihlen, a single mother with a young son, became part of community of expat artists, writers and musicians. Never-before-seen footage shot by Broomfield and legendary documentarian D.A. Pennebaker make for a unique portrait of an idyllic 1960's bohemia. It was a time that left a lasting imprint on both Marianne and Leonard, whose friendship would last another fifty years before their deaths in 2016. Directed by Nick Broomfield. Starring Leonard Cohen Marianne Ihlen, and Judy Collins.

The Door by Magda Szabo

Magda is a writer, educated, married to an academic, public-spirited, with an on-again-off-again relationship to Hungary's Communist authorities. Emerence is a peasant, illiterate,  impassive, abrupt, seemingly ageless. She lives alone in a house that no  one else may enter, not even her closest relatives. She is Magda's  housekeeper and she has taken control over Magda's household, becoming  indispensible to her.  And Emerence, in her way, has come to depend on Magda. They share a kind of love--at least until Magda's long-sought  success as a writer leads to a devastating revelation.

As Javed discovers a cathartic outlet for his own pent-up dreams, he also begins to find the courage to express himself in his own unique voice. Blinded by the Light is a joyful story of courage, love, hope, family, and the unique ability of music to lift the human spirit. The Great Gatsby follows would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of lossening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her phillandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves, and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without of the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams, and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles. Directed by Baz Luhrmann. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Toby Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Isla Fisher, and Joel Edgerton.
