Party Hearty in the Middle Ages

Virtual Art History with Mike Norris, PhD, Armchair Art Tours

Despite the Middle Ages being occasionally referred to as the Dark Ages, people in that era often enjoyed good times, especially at the table. Through art and archaeology, learn about medieval foods and their preparation - including a recipe for roast unicorn - in late-medieval feasts, as well as the rules and ceremonies under which these sumptuous foods were presented, and the types of entertainment guests might enjoy. Works from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Met's Cloisters Museum will highlight this talk.

Michael Norris has given lectures for more than twenty years, specifically in classical and medieval art, his areas of expertise. Presented as ArmchairArtTours.com, Dr. Norris' live lectures are geared especially for New Jersey audiences.

Teen Zine Virtual Workshop

Presented by Rachel Casey, MLIS Candidate, Drexel University

Make your own mini self-published, D.I.Y. Zine in this interactive workshop, where you will learn about the art of zine-making and create your very own zine!  A zine (short for magazine) is a homemade booklet that contains text, images, and art about any topic imaginable. Popular zine topics include art, comics, music, hobbies, poetry, fiction, and more. By making your own zines, you can express your creativity, interests, and individuality. Participants will need a pen or pencil, scissors and a blank sheet of paper for this virtual workshop.

Rachel Casey is a Master of Library and Information Sciences candidate at Drexel University. She has been reading, making, and collecting zines since 2009. Her favorite zine topics are feminism, music, and food. From 2012-2015, she wrote and published zines as part of the Asbury Park Feminist Collective, including a Women's History Month Zine, which was added to the Barnard Zine Library collection. Throughout her work in library programming she has presented a variety of zine workshops for children and young adults, including at New Jersey Maker's Day.

This session will be conducted on Zoom and is free of charge. Registration and internet access are required to attend. Register below to receieve emailed information on how to access the workshop. The link will be emailed Tuesday, August 10 between 3:00 and 4:00 pm, after registration closes at noon.

The Battle of Brooklyn Live Virtual History Talk

Presented by Historian Barry Singer

This live presentation will be presented twice via Zoom! Please join us on Thursday, August 12 at 10:30 am and/or Tuesday, August 17 at 7:00 pm.

The Battle of Brooklyn, the largest battle of the American Revolutionary War, took place just 6 weeks after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and was a crushing defeat for the Continental Army. They fought at the Gowanus Road and Flatbush, and finally at the Continental stronghold at Fort Greene, as well as the other forts at Brooklyn Heights.

The American Revolution could have ended there. But favorable weather allowed George Washington, under the cover of night, to safely evacuate 9,500 men.

Out of the ashes of this defeat arose the determination and perseverance of George Washington and the Continental Army. They turned the tide only 4 months later on Christmas 1776, defeating the Hessians at Trenton, and changing the course of history.

This program will be conducted on Zoom and is free of charge. Registration and internet access are required to attend. Register below to receive emailed information on how to access the discussion. The Battle of Brooklyn Live Virtual History Talk

Presented by Historian Barry Singer

An Encore Presentation by Naturalist Jim Peck

In time for the Perseids Meteor Shower, predicted to peak the night of August 11-12, naturalist and astronomer Jim Peck will present The Sky by Day and by Night which will cover such topics as the moon, planets, stars and constellations, deep sky objects, artificial satellites, and the sun's path across the sky.
