This month, we are continuing to show the lecture series "Archaeology: An Introduction to the World's Greatest Sites" series produced by National Geographic and Great Courses.  We will be showing all 24 episodes (two per month) finishing the series in February 2021.

The work of archaeologists has commanded worldwide attention and captivated the human imagination since the earliest days of the exploration, with groundbreaking discoveries such as the treasures of ancient Egypt, the lost kingdoms of the Maya, and the fabled city of Troy. Archaeology brings us face-to-face with our distant ancestors, with treasures of the past, and with life as it was lived in long-ago civilizations.

Average episode 30 minutes; showing two episodes each month on the first wednesday at 12:30 unless otherwise noted in this calendar.  The Friends of the South Brunswick Public Library have purchased the 12-month Site License to be able to show the whole course in the coming year.

Pain and glory

Pain and Glory (Spain)

(2019, R, 113 minutes)

Directed by Pedro Almodoyar. Starring: Antonio Banderas, Penelope Cruz, Asier Etxeandia, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Nora Nayas, Julieta Serrano, Cesar Vicente, Asier Flores.

Tells of a series of reencounters experienced by Salvador Mallo, a film director in his physical decline. Some of them in the flesh, others remembered: his childhood in the 60s, when he emigrated with his parents to a village in Valencia in search of prosperity, the first desire, his first adult love in the Madrid of the 80s, the pain of the breakup of that love while it was still alive and intense, writing as the only therapy to forget the unforgettable, the early discovery of cinema, and the void, the infinite void that creates the incapacity to keep on making films.

Pain and Glory (Spain)

(2019, R, 113 minutes)

Directed by Pedro Almodoyar. Starring: Antonio Banderas, Penelope Cruz, Asier Etxeandia, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Nora Nayas, Julieta Serrano, Cesar Vicente, Asier Flores.

Tells of a series of reencounters experienced by Salvador Mallo, a film director in his physical decline. Some of them in the flesh, others remembered: his childhood in the 60s, when he emigrated with his parents to a village in Valencia in search of prosperity, the first desire, his first adult love in the Madrid of the 80s, the pain of the breakup of that love while it was still alive and intense, writing as the only therapy to forget the unforgettable, the early discovery of cinema, and the void, the infinite void that creates the incapacity to keep on making films.

statue of a woman holding a staffThe Friends of the Library have received a grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities to offer this live dramatic production that recounts the legend of “Molly Pitcher” (Mary Hays McCauley), the heroine of the 1778 Battle of Monmouth Courthouse – and explores the daily lives of the “women of the army” who followed their husbands to war during the American Revolution. Molly reminisces about when she accompanied her husband through summer battles and winter encampments from Valley Forge to Monmouth to Morristown. Relating her tales of firing a cannon in the heat of battle to trudging “behind the baggage,” she provides a glimpse into what it was like to be a “camp follower” in the days when American independence was a dream rather a certainty.

Presenter: Stacy Roth - Historical Interpreter and Educator

Stacy F. Roth, of "History on the Hoof," is a freelance historical interpreter, educator, vocalist, and musician (with a background in museums, libraries, archives, and material culture) who combines her talents to create multi-layered presentations that make history accessible and engaging. She holds a BA in History from Kean College of NJ, an MA in American Civilization from the University of Pennsylvania, and an MLS from Rutgers. Ms. Roth is the author of Past Into Present: Effective Techniques for First-Person Historical Interpretation (University of North Carolina Press, 1998).

The New Jersey Council for the Humanities provides the Public Scholars Project to libraries and other institutions who increase educational opportunities to the general public.  Each year, the Council subsidizes at least 200 high-quality public humanities programs for host organizations throughout the state, providing opportunities for New Jersey communities to explore history, values, culture, and beliefs, and to engage in key questions with the support of a scholarly perspective.  The fees were paid for  by the Friends of the South Brunswick Public Library..

You can visit the Council's Calendar of Events to find where other similar programs are being held through-out the state this year:  https://njhumanities.org/events/month/

Program suitable for adults and middle and high school students studying the American Revolution.  Light refreshments will be served.
