misc_none.png 2:00 PM  -  3:00 PM Poetry Book Release for National Poetry Month Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend

Image result for national poetry month 2020Local poet Coleen Marks has published her second book of poetry titled Twin Passions that features her own poems and her personal photography.  Come to the library this afternoon at 2:00 p.m. and help celebrate the release of the book during National Poetry Month.

Coleen Marks has explored many forms of art and writing. Her latest book, Twin Passions, pairs two of those explorations. An artist model in her early days she then had a long career as an HR executive, still always keeping her fingers in the arts. Falling in love with photography she grew into an award-winning
photographer, whose work is in several corporate and many private collections. A graduate of Rutgers University, where she was able to study poetry with Alicia Ostriker. She also greatly benefited from many courses and workshops at the International Center of Photography, NYC, one about pairing photography and poetry together.  This is an excerpt from Twin Passions:

The Cool of Wise
    The supreme elegance
    of knowing how to wane.
                         ~ Colette

You’ve outfoxed youth
slacked off from striving,
lived long enough to cede
the need to ask permission.

Roll up your inner sleeves,
laugh at lessons learned,
impart those hard-won insights
from this gift of age.

Lean back on memories,
let in that sage
sense of an open mind,
make time for grace.

misc_none.png Earth Day - 50th Anniversary Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend

Image result for earth day 2020Today marks the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day.  To celebrate, be sure to go outdoors and hug a tree today!

In the late 1960s, a lack of regulations was pushing the environment to the brink. Leaded gas and industry emissions were causing record-breaking amounts of pollution across the United States.

On Jan. 28, 1969, an oil rig exploded six miles off the California coast, leaking over 3 million gallons of oil into the water and onto the coastline. Clean-up took months. Over 10,000 birds, fish and sea mammals were killed, and the Santa Barbara ecosystem was destroyed.

The oil spill — the third largest in U.S. history — was the proverbial final straw that marked a turning point in public engagement on environmental issues.

Earth Day was the brainchild of U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, who was inspired to act when he witnessed the oil spill’s aftermath from an airplane. Nelson realized that if he wanted politicians to protect the environment, he would have to find a way to merge the energy of the anti-Vietnam War protests of the time with a growing public awareness about pollution.

Nelson recruited Republican Congressman Pete McCloskey and Denis Hayes, a Harvard graduate student, to orchestrate a national teach-in day on the environment. Earth Day was born.

Working with a team of 85 people, the three men organized protests and events across the country. On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans — 10 percent of the U.S. population at the time — took to city streets, parks and college campuses to demand regulations to save the planet.

These demonstrations led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts, all within a year of the first Earth Day.

Image result for Archaeology great courses lecturesThis month, we are continuing to show the lecture series "Archaeology: An Introduction to the World's Greatest Sites" series produced by National Geographic and Great Courses.  We will be showing all 24 episodes (two per month) finishing the series in February 2021.

Today's we will show:

Episode 5: How Do Archaeologists Know Where to Dig?

This lecture uncovers the methodology archaeologists use in looking for sites. Get acquainted with the uses of remote sensing technologies, such as LiDAR and ground penetrating radar, which enable archaeologists to visualize objects obscured by vegetation and soil. Then investigate ground surveys-reconnaissance done by carefully walking potential sites-which reveal vital information before digging.

Episode 6: Prehistoric Archaeology

Prehistoric archaeology allows us to glimpse the earliest times in hominid and human history. Learn about seminal 20th-century finds of hominids in Africa, which provided clues to the origins of our ancestors from millions of years ago. Then discover the astounding figural cave paintings of Lascaux, Altamira, and Chauvet.

Average episode 30 minutes; showing two episodes each month on the first wednesday at 12:30 unless otherwise noted in this calendar.  The Friends of the South Brunswick Public Library have purchased the 12-month Site License to be able to show the whole course in the coming year.
