The nonfiction book discussion group meets every other month (the second Monday at 7:00) to discuss a thought-provoking nonfiction book about about history, politics, contemporary issues, etc.

In this wake-up call for general readers and undergraduate students, environmental journalist Joel K. Bourne argues that climate change could make it impossible to feed the growing global population in the next 40 years. The accessible narrative takes general readers around the world to meet individuals, families, activists, and agricultural innovators in small and large farms and research projects. The book’s engaging style, larger type, and black and white photos offer further appeal. Author Bourne has written for National Geographic, Audubon, Science, and Outside. He holds a BS in agronomy and a MS in journalism. Annotation ©2015 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)

Please register at the Information Desk and pick up a copy of the book (cost $5.00).

Fifteen months ago, Mason’s best friend Benny turned up dead in the Buttle family’s orchard. An investigation drags on and ever-honest Mason can’t understand why Lieutenant Baird won’t believe his story. Mason and his new friend, tiny Calvin, are relentlessly bullied by the other boys in their neighborhood, so they create an underground club space. When Calvin goes missing, Mason finds himself in trouble again. He’s desperate to figure out what happened to Calvin, and eventually, Benny. But will anyone believe him?

Please bring a dish to share. Beverages and dessert provided. For students entering grades 5-9 w/caregiver. Please register and pick up a copy of the book.

On the island inhabited only by children, everything is absolutely perfect. Only one thing ever changes: on that fateful day, each year, when a boat appears from the mist upon the ocean carrying one young child to join them and taking the eldest one away, never to be seen again. Today’s Changing is no different. The boat arrives, taking away Jinny’s best friend, Deen, replacing him with a new little girl named Ess, and leaving Jinny as the new Elder. Jinny knows her responsibility is to teach Ess everything she needs to know about the island to keep things as they’ve always been. Will she be ready for the inevitable day when the boat will come back and take her away forever from the only home she’s known?

At the center of Mountains Beyond Mountains stands Paul Farmer. Doctor, Harvard Professor, renowned infectious-disease specialist, anthropologist, the recipient of a MacArthur "genius" grant, world-class Robin Hood, Farmer was brought up in a bus and on a boat, and in medical school found his life's calling: to diagnose and cure infectious diseases and to bring the lifesaving tools of modern medicine to those who need them most. This book shows how radical change can be fostered in situations that seem insurmountable, and it also shows how a meaningful life can be created, as Farmer - brilliant, charismatic, charming, both a leader in international health and a doctor who finds time to make house calls in Boston and the mountains of Haiti - blasts through convention to get results.

Please register at the Information Desk and pick up a copy of the book (cost $5.00).

To join one or all monthly meetings, paperback copies of the book are available at the reference desk for $5. This program is funded by the Friends of the Library.
