Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford

When artifacts from Japanese families sent to internment camps during World War II are uncovered during renovations at Seattle's Panama Hotel, Henry Lee embarks on a personal quest that leads to memories of growing up Chinese in a city rife with anti-Japanese sentiment and of Keiko, a Japanese girl whose love transcended cultures and generations.

The fiction book discussion group meets each month to carefully analyze the current selection in a warm and welcoming setting.  The group also eats. To join one or all monthly meetings, paperback copies of the book are available at the reference desk for $5. This program is funded by the Friends of the Library.

Read and discuss Lois Lowry’s semi-autobiographical Autumn Street as a family. We are excited to have the opportunity to attend “The Creative Life: A Conversation Series at UAlbany” featuring the award-winning and leading voice of children’s literature, Lois Lowry. We will discuss the book, share a meal provided by the Library, and, for those who wish to attend, venture to Page Hall to hear Lois Lowry in person at 7:00 pm! For children in grades 5-9 and their parents/caregivers. Please register and pick up a book at the Information Desk.

Image result for veteransThere are things to be afraid of in the woods at the end of Autumn Street. But, the year Elizabeth goes to live in her grandfather's big house while her father is fighting in World War II, she can't put a name to those dark, shadowy fears. Elizabeth finds solace in her friendship with Charles, a boy who teaches her to take risks. Together the two children try to interpret an adult world that is always puzzling and often cruel.  On a day when snow obscures everything but terror, they leave that world behind and enter the world that is waiting in the woods. What do they find?

RESCHEDULED TO MARCH 20 DUE TO A WATER MAIN BREAK

Today’s baby boomers can expect to live longer in their retirement years due to rapid advances in science, medicine and technology in comparison to previous generations. As a result, the concern over the possibility of increased longevity is causing a major paradigm shift in how people view and prepare for their retirement.

In particular, the timing of when to claim one’s Social Security benefits was once a simple decision and now requires advanced planning and a coordinated strategy. For many retirees and their spouses, taking the time to properly evaluate this important financial decision can be a major step toward a more comfortable retirement.

The program seeks to explore retirement from a time perspective as well as the impact of longevity in order to help attendees (ages 55+) make a more informed decision before choosing when to claim their Social Security benefits. Topics covered include recent changes in legislation, why Social Security is crucial to women, avoiding frequent claiming mistakes and the best way to maximize benefits.

The workshop is sponsored by Retirement Solutions, LLC and is open to the general public. There is no cost to attend. Advanced registration is required. Light refreshments will served.
