7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM Wingmasters: North American Birds of Prey Rescheduled
    Contact: Reference   978-623-8430   rdesk@mhl.org

The program is rescheduled to Monday, January 22 at 7:00pm, due to the predicted storm on January 17th. Priority will be given to those who registered for the original program.

This program is recommended for children aged 6 and up.

Birds of prey are also known as raptors, and they are hunting birds characterized by hooked beaks and powerful grabbing feet armed with sharp talons (the word raptor comes from a Latin word that means "to seize"). Raptors can also boast the best eyesight and the sharpest hearing in the animal kingdom. Raptors include hawks, falcons and owls, and this presentation, which incorporates 5-6 live birds of prey gives an overview of these different categories. The program is designed to explain predation, the birds' place at the top of the food web, their different hunting adaptations and their status in a rapidly changing world. Because many birds of prey are declining in number, this presentation also features one or more of the endangered raptors that WINGMASTERS cares for, and explains why these species face an uncertain future.

This month's Night Readers selection will be The War that Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley.  Nine-year-old Ada has never left her one-room apartment. Her mother is too humiliated by Ada’s twisted foot to let her outside. So when her little brother Jamie is shipped out of London to escape the war, Ada doesn’t waste a minute—she sneaks out to join him.  So begins a new adventure of Ada, and for Susan Smith, the woman who is forced to take the two kids in. As Ada teaches herself to ride a pony, learns to read, and watches for German spies, she begins to trust Susan—and Susan begins to love Ada and Jamie. But in the end, will their bond be enough to hold them together through wartime? Or will Ada and her brother fall back into the cruel hands of their mother?

It has raised an opportunity to examine what it means to be white, and to participate in a system that supports white supremacy. This workshop will explore the history and construction of whiteness, what it means to be white in today’s world, and how people who are white can disrupt racism and whiteness personally, interpersonally, and systemically.

Facilitator: Rev. Julie A Mavity Maddalena is a PhD candidate in Religious Studies and Director of Spiritual Life at Brooks School in North Andover, where she has facilitated Examining Whiteness workshops.  Her research interests include Critical Studies of Whiteness and Critical Race Theories and Theologies.

Today's gardeners are increasingly interested in incorporating native native plants in their landscapes. What plants are best suited to our region and to the particular conditions of our modern gardens? How can they be effective combined with introduced species and cultivars?  Join Joann Vieira for a look at some outstanding native plants which can be cultivated using sustainable techniques, and provide benefits for pollinators, birds and other wildlife.

Joann Vieira, Horticulture Director of Tower Hill Botanic Garden, entered the world of horticulture through a passion for native plants. This passion led her first to the Stockbridge program at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, then to the Environmental Design  program in the Landscape Architecture department at UMASS. In the midst of her studies she  held an internship at the New England Wildflower Society’s Garden in the Woods, where she was introduced to the then undeveloped Tower Hill Botanic Garden. She began her career at Tower Hill Botanic Garden two years later as a garden intern. Joann has held the lead horticulture position at the garden since 1988, helping to shape the gardens, landscape and plant collections through the major garden and building development. She is past President of the Horticultural Club of Boston; past board member of the Ecological Landscape Alliance; served on the Awards Committee of the American Public Garden Association; is the staff chair for the Cary Award Selection, Grower and Marketing Committees; as well as serving on many of the Tower Hill Botanic Garden  committees. She is the recipient of the Worcester County Horticultural Society (2013) and Massachusetts Horticultural Society Silver Medals (2005), and the Thomas Roland Medal from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society (2015). She is a frequent lecturer on a variety of horticultural topics throughout the region.

    Contact: Reference   978-623-8430   rdesk@mhl.org

A screening of Alice's Ordinary People, a film about civil rights activist, Alice Tregay, will be followed by a discussion with the filmmaker, Craig Dudnick.

After completing Evanston’s Living History, I was approached by Alice Tregay to make a second documentary; this one to honor the selfless activists of the Chicago Freedom Movement.

I first met Alice when she contributed many wonderful photographs of her brother, former Evanston Fire Chief Sanders Hicks, to my Evanston film. I had no idea at that time of her status as heroine of the Civil Rights Movement.

It was a pleasure to spend time with Alice and her colleagues, recording firsthand accounts of historical events—including some important items that the historical texts omitted. We hope that Alice’s Ordinary People, will inspire future generations to “take up the mantle and continue the fight.”

Alice’s life story reads like a history of the movement. Early on she fought the “Willis Wagons.” The second class structures were built to relieve overcrowding in those Chicago schools which served the African American community. Their very existence perpetuated segregation.

In 1966, Dr. King came to Chicago. Alice and her husband James Tregay, marched with him, often at great personal risk. It was at this time that Dr. King joined the Reverend Jesse Jackson, and the Reverend James Bevel to form Operation Breadbasket. Breadbasket fought racism on many fronts, but its main task was jobs for African Americans, particularly from those businesses drawing profits from the African American community.

Under the leadership of Reverend Jackson, the months that Alice and her “ordinary people” spent picketing led to real change. But it was through her Political Education class, that Alice had her most significant impact. Over a four year period, thousands were trained to work in independent political campaigns. This new force was integral to the re-election of Ralph Metcalf to Congress (this time as an independent democrat), to the election of Harold Washington, mayor, and to making Barack Obama, our first African American President.

Alice’s contribution is unique in American history, and an hour program can only tell so much. It is my hope that one day a book will also be written on this important subject.    ---Craig Dudnick

Sweetwater Fishing Opportunities with Tim Moore

Moore will discuss a few of his favorite northeast freshwater fishing opportunities, northern pike, black crappie, and white perch. He will share the techniques, tools, and tactics he uses to locate and catch these pike in the spring and fall, as well as crappie and white perch through open water and ice fishing. “These three fish alone could keep an angler busy all year. I hope to spark some of the same interest that I have in them with other anglers,” says Moore.

Tim Moore is a full-time NH fishing guide, outdoor writer, and the producer of the YouTube fishing shows Tim Moore Outdoors TV and In Season Outdoors TV. He has held multiple state fishing records and currently holds one NH state record and one ice fishing world record. He has been featured on television shows such as NH’s Wildside TV, Field & Stream’s Hook Shots, and Across the Ice Belt with Ice Team on FSN. He has also been featured in or on the cover of magazines such as Coastal Angler Magazine, Northwoods Sporting Journal, and the Ice Team Digital Magazine, Outdoor Life, and In-Fisherman Magazine.

Far, Far Away Fishing with Captains Skip and Al Montello

The fishing captain brothers will share their fishing adventures from one end of the planet to the other. They've chased Arctic char above the Arctic Circle, Super Silver Salmon in Alaska, huge Lahontan cutthroat trout in Nevada, and monster rainbow trout in southern Patagonia.

Captain Skip Montello charters and fishes from Cape Ann to the Merrimack River (www.northcoastangler.com). Skip is a passionate fly and light tackle angling professional with a lifetime of experience fishing New England waters for stripers, blues and bluefin tuna. He has also fished the Florida Keys for tarpon, the Great Lakes tribs for salmon and steelhead, Alaska, Newfoundland and British Columbia for salmon and trout. Skip coordinates the Fish On! Andover series each February. He is frequently called upon to present local angling and fly tying seminars for various fishing clubs and other organizations, and he writes  a regular column for On The Water Magazine, covering Cape Ann to the NH border. Before becoming a full time guide, he enjoyed a successful science and engineering career at the Polaroid Corporation.

Captain Al Montello is an expert fly and light tackle angling professional with North Coast Angler. He is frequently called upon to do fly fishing seminars at many anglers clubs. He is considered by many as the local authority on fly fishing tactics for American Shad. Al is also well traveled in his angling adventures, having fished many of the famous western rivers and the Great Lakes tributaries. Al is well known for his fly tying skills and creativity and enjoys a successful career as a chemical engineer.

Fishing videos from 6:00-7:00pm. Seminar starts at 7:00pm. Weekly prizes!

7:00 PM  -  9:00 PM Panel Discussion of Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates
    Contact: Reference   978-623-8430   rdesk@mhl.org

In a profound work that pivots from the biggest questions about American history and ideals to the most intimate concerns of a father for his son, Ta-Nehisi Coates offers a powerful new framework for understanding our nation’s history and current crisis. Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race,” a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of black women and men—bodies exploited through slavery and segregation, and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden?

Panelists will discuss their experience of reading Coates’ book, the significance of his message, the lived experience of black men and boys in America, and how we as a community can support them.

Facilitator: Shaunielle McDonald, Director of Diversity Initiatives at Brooks School.

Panelists will include:
Michael Eatman, Director of Community Life at Pike School
Martin Henson from Black Lives Matter, Boston
Trey Brown, Office of Admissions, Phillips Academy
Linda Carter Griffith, Assistant Head of School for Equity, Inclusion and Wellness at Phillips Academy

Author Richard Rubin returns to Memorial Hall Library to discuss and share his latest book, Back Over There.

In Last of the Doughboys, Richard Rubin introduced readers to a forgotten generation of Americans: the men and women who fought and won the First World War.  Interviewing the war's last survivors face-to-face, he knew well the importance of being present if you want to get the real story.  But he soon came to realize that to get the whole story, he had to go Over There, too.  So he did, and discovered that while most Americans regard that war as dead and gone, to the French, who still live among its ruins and memories, it remains very much alive.

Years later, with the centennial of the war only magnifying this paradox, Rubin decided to go back Over There to see if he could, at last, resolve it.  For months he followed the trail of the American Expeditionary Forces on the Western Front, finding trenches, tunnels, bunkers, century-old graffiti and ubiquitous artifacts.  But he also found an abiding fondness for America and Americans, and a colorful corps of local after-hours historians and archeologists who tirelessly explore these sites and preserve the memories they embody while patiently waiting for Americans to return and reclaim their own history and heritage.  None of whom seemed to mind that his French needed work.

Based on his wildly popular New York Times series, Back Over There is a timely journey, in turns reverent and iconoclastic but always fascinating, through a place where the past and present are never really separated.

Sponsored by the Friends of MHL. His book will be available for purchase.

Have the all the pieces of the college application process become so overwhelming that they have paralyzed you? That is exactly how author, Terry Clark, felt in 2010 when her eldest daughter entered her junior year of high school.  It was only through extensive research into the mysteries behind those universities that she was able to gain a sense of confidence about the admissions process. The author of a book by the same name, Terry will offer parents practical advice and real world experience, bringing together all of the information you need to know about the college matriculation process, from freshman year in high school to acceptance into college.

A lot of great kids write average (even bad) college essays—essays about “life lessons learned from football” or “how my trip to Europe broadened my cultural horizons.” Better tales are there for the writing. This workshop will show you what admissions officers really look for in great college essays, and offer suggestions for finding and sharing your best stories. We’ll even share the five most over-used topics you must avoid and give you tips on how to start and finish your essays.

Abby Van Geldern from College Wise will present and teens and parents/caregivers are welcome to attend.

2:30 PM  -  4:00 PM Friends' Concert Series: Sandro Russo
    Contact: Reference   978-623-8430   rdesk@mhl.org

Acclaimed Italian-born concert pianist, Sandro Russo, is best known for his idiomatic interpretations of the romantic piano literature. His program will showcase multiple facets of the 19th and 20th century repertoire.

Acclaimed for his profound sense of poetry and distinctive style, Russo has been in demand as a soloist in many venues around the world. He unanimously receives accolades for his sparkling virtuosity and his playing has often been referred to as a throwback to the grand tradition of elegant pianism and beautiful sound. Composer Lowell Liebermann wrote of him, “Sandro Russo is a musician's musician and a pianist's pianist. There is no technical challenge too great for him, but it is his musicianship that ultimately makes the greatest impression. His interpretations reveal a unique and profound artist at work.”

Born in San Giovanni Gemini, Italy, Mr. Russo displayed exceptional musical talent from an early age. In 1995, he graduated summa cum laude from the V. Bellini Conservatory, and earned the Pianoforte Performing Diploma from the Royal College of Music in London with honors. Soon after Mr. Russo moved to the United States in 2000, he won the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra Concerto Competition, and has ever since performed in such prestigious concert halls as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Weill and Zankel halls at Carnegie Hall, Salle Cortot in Paris, Teatro Politeama in Palermo and the Konzerthaus Berlin.

His recitals include performances for The Rachmaninoff Society, the Dame Myra Hess series in Chicago, Concerts Grand in Santa Rosa (CA), the American Liszt Society, the Houston International Piano Festival, the Husum Festival of Piano Rarities in Germany and the Chetham's International Piano Festival in Manchester (U.K.), among others.

Mr. Russo has appeared as a soloist with the Slovak Philharmonic in Bratislava, the Jacksonville Symphony in Florida and the Brussels Chamber Orchestra at the opening gala of The Music Festival of the Hamptons in 2008. He also gave three highly praised performances of the Rachmaninoff 3rd Concerto in Palermo, Italy and was the featured soloist with the New York Asian Symphony for a Japan tour.

His performances have aired on major radio stations in the US and abroad. His latest recording, Rachmaninov – Solo Piano Works, released on the Steinway & Sons label, has received great critical acclaim and has been chosen “Disc of the Month” by Italy’s The Classic Voice magazine. He is a Steinway Artist. www.sandrorussopianist.com

Join other adults for Andover's tenth Death Cafe - an evening of open, lively, and insightful discussion about death.

While not a support group nor a venue for bereavement, a Death Cafe seeks to provide an unscripted, non-judgmental platform for those wishing to explore the many facets of this often taboo subject.

Come with an open mind, a healthy curiosity, and a willingness to share your thoughts, feelings, and questions with other like-minded individuals.

Please join us at 6:30pm for socializing and refreshments, followed by a prompt event start at 7:00pm.

Hosted by Andover resident, Richard Davis. Seating is limited - please pre-register online.

Contact Stefani Traina at straina@mhl.org or 978-623-8451 for futher information and/or visit www.deathcafe.com.
