Scotland’s population is smaller than Massachusetts, but it has produced millions of emigrants who have settled in all parts of the world. Immigration to New England began as early as 1651 with the arrival of Scots prisoners from the Battle of Dunbar, and has continued down to recent times. Scottish genealogical records are among the most complete and comprehensive of any European country, and anyone with ancestors who arrived in the 1850s or later is almost certain to have success in tracing them back to their parish of origin. Learn about the basic steps in undertaking Scottish genealogy, what genealogical records exist and how to access them as well as Andover’s role in Scottish emigration.”

Originally from Andover, David Dearborn joined the NEHGS staff in 1976 and worked there for 38 years before retiring as Senior Genealogist. His research interests include Scottish ancestry, families of Essex County, MA as well as Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont genealogy.  He has recently returned from a research trip to Scotland and Ireland.

Are you living a life by your own conscious design?  Has everything been placed just right to give you the balance, space and time needed to help you flourish?  Would you say you are thriving, or surviving?

It is so easy to get caught up in the right now, that we lose focus of what we really want and need in our lives.  We seldom have the time and space to take a pause, breathe and focus on what we want our life to look like and how we want to spend our valuable time.

Join our presenter, Jennessa Durrani, for a fun, two hour, interactive workshop to help you set your sights on your life by design and begin to put the pieces together.

The evening will include fun exercises and guided meditation with the goal of leaving with a clear view of how you want your future to look--what you want to avoid--and what you can't wait to add.

Jennessa Durrani is an entrepreneur, business owner, wife and mother to two crazy boys.  Along with leading her booming corporate event planning company—Celebrate that she founded 15 years ago; Jennessa works closely with women to help them design the life they want to live through her blog, public speaking, workshops, and online programs. Her audiences benefit from her extensive business background and creative flair. And they can't help but have fun along the way, as Jennessa lends her positive personality, exceptional humor, and high energy to every project and engagement.

Before starting her first business, Jennessa spent 10 years at a corporate interior design and architecture firm in Boston. She worked in several areas of the company over this decade, including design, sales, marketing, project management, and operations management. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Iowa State University's College of Design and an MBA from Northeastern University. She graduated Summa Cum Laude and was inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society - the highest honor a business student can receive.

Jennessa has been published in The Boston Business Journal, More, Women’s Business, The Andovers and the Andover Townsman and pens a blog as Just Jennessa sharing her ideas, tips and hacks for helping busy families. This program is recommended for children aged 6 and up. Please register the name of everyone attending.

Birds of prey are also known as raptors, and they are hunting birds characterized by hooked beaks and powerful grabbing feet armed with sharp talons (the word raptor comes from a Latin word that means "to seize"). Raptors can also boast the best eyesight and the sharpest hearing in the animal kingdom. Raptors include hawks, falcons and owls, and this presentation, which incorporates 5-6 live birds of prey gives an overview of these different categories. The program is designed to explain predation, the birds' place at the top of the food web, their different hunting adaptations and their status in a rapidly changing world. Because many birds of prey are declining in number, this presentation also features one or more of the endangered raptors that WINGMASTERS cares for, and explains why these species face an uncertain future.

This month's Night Readers selection will be The War that Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley.  Nine-year-old Ada has never left her one-room apartment. Her mother is too humiliated by Ada’s twisted foot to let her outside. So when her little brother Jamie is shipped out of London to escape the war, Ada doesn’t waste a minute—she sneaks out to join him.  So begins a new adventure of Ada, and for Susan Smith, the woman who is forced to take the two kids in. As Ada teaches herself to ride a pony, learns to read, and watches for German spies, she begins to trust Susan—and Susan begins to love Ada and Jamie. But in the end, will their bond be enough to hold them together through wartime? Or will Ada and her brother fall back into the cruel hands of their mother?

A screening of Alice's Ordinary People, a film about civil rights activist, Alice Tregay, will be followed by a discussion with the filmmaker, Craig Dudnick.

After completing Evanston’s Living History, I was approached by Alice Tregay to make a second documentary; this one to honor the selfless activists of the Chicago Freedom Movement.

I first met Alice when she contributed many wonderful photographs of her brother, former Evanston Fire Chief Sanders Hicks, to my Evanston film. I had no idea at that time of her status as heroine of the Civil Rights Movement.

It was a pleasure to spend time with Alice and her colleagues, recording firsthand accounts of historical events—including some important items that the historical texts omitted. We hope that Alice’s Ordinary People, will inspire future generations to “take up the mantle and continue the fight.”

Alice’s life story reads like a history of the movement. Early on she fought the “Willis Wagons.” The second class structures were built to relieve overcrowding in those Chicago schools which served the African American community. Their very existence perpetuated segregation.

In 1966, Dr. King came to Chicago. Alice and her husband James Tregay, marched with him, often at great personal risk. It was at this time that Dr. King joined the Reverend Jesse Jackson, and the Reverend James Bevel to form Operation Breadbasket. Breadbasket fought racism on many fronts, but its main task was jobs for African Americans, particularly from those businesses drawing profits from the African American community.

Under the leadership of Reverend Jackson, the months that Alice and her “ordinary people” spent picketing led to real change. But it was through her Political Education class, that Alice had her most significant impact. Over a four year period, thousands were trained to work in independent political campaigns. This new force was integral to the re-election of Ralph Metcalf to Congress (this time as an independent democrat), to the election of Harold Washington, mayor, and to making Barack Obama, our first African American President.

Alice’s contribution is unique in American history, and an hour program can only tell so much. It is my hope that one day a book will also be written on this important subject.    ---Craig Dudnick

2:30 PM  -  4:00 PM Friends' Concert Series: Sandro Russo
    Contact: Reference   978-623-8430   rdesk@mhl.org

Acclaimed Italian-born concert pianist, Sandro Russo, is best known for his idiomatic interpretations of the romantic piano literature. His program will showcase multiple facets of the 19th and 20th century repertoire.

Acclaimed for his profound sense of poetry and distinctive style, Russo has been in demand as a soloist in many venues around the world. He unanimously receives accolades for his sparkling virtuosity and his playing has often been referred to as a throwback to the grand tradition of elegant pianism and beautiful sound. Composer Lowell Liebermann wrote of him, “Sandro Russo is a musician's musician and a pianist's pianist. There is no technical challenge too great for him, but it is his musicianship that ultimately makes the greatest impression. His interpretations reveal a unique and profound artist at work.”

Born in San Giovanni Gemini, Italy, Mr. Russo displayed exceptional musical talent from an early age. In 1995, he graduated summa cum laude from the V. Bellini Conservatory, and earned the Pianoforte Performing Diploma from the Royal College of Music in London with honors. Soon after Mr. Russo moved to the United States in 2000, he won the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra Concerto Competition, and has ever since performed in such prestigious concert halls as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Weill and Zankel halls at Carnegie Hall, Salle Cortot in Paris, Teatro Politeama in Palermo and the Konzerthaus Berlin.

His recitals include performances for The Rachmaninoff Society, the Dame Myra Hess series in Chicago, Concerts Grand in Santa Rosa (CA), the American Liszt Society, the Houston International Piano Festival, the Husum Festival of Piano Rarities in Germany and the Chetham's International Piano Festival in Manchester (U.K.), among others.

Mr. Russo has appeared as a soloist with the Slovak Philharmonic in Bratislava, the Jacksonville Symphony in Florida and the Brussels Chamber Orchestra at the opening gala of The Music Festival of the Hamptons in 2008. He also gave three highly praised performances of the Rachmaninoff 3rd Concerto in Palermo, Italy and was the featured soloist with the New York Asian Symphony for a Japan tour.

His performances have aired on major radio stations in the US and abroad. His latest recording, Rachmaninov – Solo Piano Works, released on the Steinway & Sons label, has received great critical acclaim and has been chosen “Disc of the Month” by Italy’s The Classic Voice magazine. He is a Steinway Artist. www.sandrorussopianist.com
