Virtual Art Exhibit by Painter Nathalie Fitzgerald
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 898-4964   jhlady@ocln.org

From May lst through June 30th, there will be a wonderful art exhibit on display virtually at the Milton Public Library.  Artist Nathalie Fitzgerald, a Milton native, attended Providence College and studied Visual Arts with a concentration in painting.  She received her Masters in Education from Fitchburg State University, and currently works as a high school art teacher on the South Shore.  Now living in Dorchester, Nathalie hopes that she inspires in her students a passion for art through creative experiences.  In her free time she works with clients to take on small and large painting commissions, and her preferred medium is oils.

The online display at our website (www.miltonlibrary.org) will show Nathalie’s lovely work, which includes scenes of flowers and gardens, landscapes, city streets, architecture, and much more.  Please check out this enjoyable art exhibit in the next couple of months!  For more information about displaying your art at the Library, Email jhlady@ocln.org or call her at (617) 898-4964.  Also we hope you will have a chance to view all of our virtual exhibits – both current and past – by going to this link:   https://miltonlibrary.libguides.com/art

Materials to gather: seeds (packets of garden seeds and seeds in your kitchen such as beans), potting soil (from a garden center, hardware store or grocery store), recycled plastic containers of different sizes (small yogurt containers, shallow plastic lids from takeout to catch water when placed underneath and create a "greenhouse" if clear plastic and placed over containers....

    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 898-4964   jhlady@ocln.org

The mother-daughter team of Ehris Jancz-Urban and Velya Urban from the Grounded Goodwife company in Connecticut will return this evening to give an informative and enjoyable talk about the right herbal "superstars" to nurture in a home herb garden for good health and wellness.  These "superstar" herbs can treat common ailments like colds and flu, inflammation, minor cuts, infections, pain, muscle spasms, anxiety, poor digestion, and insomnia.  But where do you begin?  How can I even start a medicinal herb garden, you are saying to yourself....It's the question many people ask, normally out of fear of getting it wrong, or growing something that could poison their family.  Starting your herb garden isn't as overwhelming as you may think - and spending time in a medicinal herb garden is healing by its very existence!

Ehris and Velya bring a lot of enthusiasm and positive emotion to their presentations, and we know you will enjoy this one!  The Grounded Goodwife consists of a zany teacher and a grounded green herbalist who have joined forces to create a wonderful connection with audiences as they discuss entertaining historical topics and herbs to help treat health concerns.  Their delivery is funny and frank, and for more info. about them go to their website: https://groundedgoodwife.com

Advance registration is required to attend and once signed up, a Zoom connection link will be Emailed to you on the day of the program.  This event is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is supported in part by a grant from the Milton Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM Ask the Conductor: A Virtual Visit with Steve Lipsitt
    Contact: William Adamczyk   (617) 698-5757   jhlady@ocln.org

In memory of the Library's former trustee Herb Voigt, please join us this evening via Zoom for a conversation with Steven Lipsitt.  Maestro Lipsitt is the Founding Director of the Bach, Beethoven & Brahams Society of Boston.  He will speak about his position and will answer questions about his role and classical music.

When you attend a concert or other musical event, do you wonder about the instrumentalists on stage or in the pit?  Who wrote the music and what were their expectations, why those particular instruments, what did the players do to earn that spot, how do they maintain their skills, and when is it OK to clap?  This speaker will explore the rich fabric of classical music performance as he focuses on the topic: "Rhythm and Emotions."  Some questions he may ponder are how do master composers use rhythmic figuration to create atmosphere and evoke a mood or feeling in the listener.  And what psychological or theatrical role do repetition and form play in the persuasiveness of a musical composition?

Maestro Lipsitt has conducted orchestras in Russia, Greece, Brazil, China, the Czech Republic, Canada, and the U.S.  He has been a guest conductor at Scottish Opera, the Kennedy Center Opera House, Boston Lyric Opera, the Boston Pops, and Boston Ballet, and has served as cover conductor for the symphony orchestras of St. Louis, Toronto, and Boston.  He has trained young musicians at Tanglewood, New England Conservatory, Boston University, the Hart School of Music, and the Boston Conservatory Opera Theatre.  Steven has collaborated with Pete Seeger, Judy Collins, Odetta, Bobby McFerrin, the Empire Brass Quintet, and members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

We hope you will join us!   Advance registration is required and you can sign up here.  Once registered, a Zoom connection link will be Emailed to you on the day of the event so that you can participate.  This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to all.

Now more than ever we need a good laugh, and this interactive hour does just that!  Bring your jokes, funny stories, and creativity to this presentation using humor to have fun, reduce anxiety, and press your emotional reset button.  Laughter will reduce your stress, improve your outlook, and lead to better quality of life.  As a college professor and professional stand-up comedian, Dave Rattigan has been making people laugh for nearly three decades, in the classroom and on Sirius Satellite radio as well as live comedy clubs.  He's also worked in less traditional venues like hospitals, libraries, a parking lot, warehouses, business lobbies, gazebos and lots of places he'd like to forget!  He has used humor to diffuse tense situations and deal better with stress.  Dave uses his stand-up material to lighten the mood, reviews the benefits of a good laugh, and then leads the group through simple improv, funny stories, shared jokes, and other exercises to create an always-fun comedy experience.

Dave Rattigan is a professional standup comedian whose CD has played on Sirius Satellite and other radio networks.  He's also appeared on NESN and the syndicated Steve Katsos Show, and performed live at top clubs in New England and as far away as Kilkenny, Ireland.  By day he's a writer and professor at UMass-Lowell and Northeastern Community College, where he uses laughter to promote learning by keeping his students relaxed and engaged.

This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.  Advance registration is required and once signed up, a Zoom connection link will be sent to you on the day of the program.  Please join us for a fun evening!   (And please note that the language used in this presentation will be clean, without profanity.)

Author of 3 books about New England and longtime "Chronicle" reporter Ted Reinstein is your tour guide as you go from Maine to Rhode Island, Mt. Washington to Mt. Mansfield, and Berkshire foliage to Fenway Park.  But Ted's 20-plus years of reporting and telling stories from all over New England means this is not your average bus tour.  Prepare to meet colorful characters who've down the darndest things, learn odd facts about familiar places, and of course - this being a Ted talk - expect to visit at least a few fabulous classic diners.  (Spoiler alert: Ted reveals where to find THE best clam chowdah in America - and it's right here in New England!)  Ted will take questions following the talk.

    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 898-4964   jhlady@ocln.org

Local author Caroline Kautsire will discuss her new book virtually via Zoom this evening.  Hailing from Weymouth, MA, Professor Kautsire teaches English at Bunker Hill Community College and has lived in America for 17 years.  She is also a community theater actress and a poet.  She uses her voice to advocate for change, to inspire, and to give people hope.  She has much wise insight to share with our audience this evening, and we hope you will join us!  You can read her book called: What Kind of Girl?: An African Child Caught Between Two Worlds (Gardners Books, c2020) by going to our website, clicking on "catalog" from the main page and placing a hold on the title.  You can also call the Reference Dept. at (617) 898-4964 to request a reserve.  This is a wonderful read and more details will follow here soon.

Here is a summary about the book:  "For Caroline, being a girl is already confusing, and growing up in the small African country of Malawi, she is constantly asked the question, "What kind of girl behaves this way?"  With a thousand cultural ideas flooding ino her head from American TV and movies, she struggles to fit into the traditional African society she was born into.  Instead, she chooses to stand out by taking risks that are curious beyond what is proper, leading to disapproval and harsh consequences.  At 9 years old, she finds herself enrolled in a high school at a boarding school far from her home and parents.  Alone, she must finally answer the question, "What kind of girl are you?:" for herself."

"[This]...is a sweeping coming of age story about a girl in Malawi who must tangle with the gender restrictions, religious institutions, American cultural attitudes, and African traditions that seek to define who she can be as a woman.  It is also a tale of how one girl's story in a distant country in Africa can become all of our stories."

His grandfather Luigi was born on a ship near Le Havre, France, on May 8, 1892, to Vincenzo and Osvalda Del Bianco, who were returning from the United States to Italy.  He showed interest in carving at a young age, and spent time in Austria and Venice studying the art.  When he was 18 years old he left for America, arriving in Barre, Vermont.  When World War I broke out, Bianco returned to Italy and fought for his home country, eventually returning to Vermont in 1920.  After being introduced to Mount Rushmore deisgner Gutzon Borglum, he began working at his studio.  Borglum said about Luigi:  "He is the only intelligent, efficient stone carver on the work who understands the language of the sculptor."  On September 16, 2017, the National Park Service unveiled a memorial plaque at Mount Rushmore.  The plaque acknowledgd Luigi Del Bianco's crucial role as the only chief carver on the work.

Lou del Bianco is an actor, storyteller, and musician, and has been working with audiences of all ages since 1982.  According to the New York Times, Lou's dramatic approach to storytelling "puts pow into passivity!"  He has performed all over the country, from Chicago to Carnegie Hall.  He has been an artist-in-residence for 17 years and has worked in many schools alongside teachers to help improve literacy in the classroom.  Please join us for his fascinating story via Zoom!
