HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY

"Symphony of Hope" The New Jersey State Youth Orchestra Virtual Concert

Premieres on   Library Website  on Sunday, May 9 at 2pm &

will be available through Monday, May 31 (no registration needed)

Happy Mother's Day! The NJSYO's Symphonic Youth Orchestra presents a free program of classics by Dukas, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Bizet, and Dvorak.  Their dedicated students and faculty have persevered during this difficult time by meeting online each week for rehearsals, and by preparing video recordings which have been combined by their audio/visual team to create virtual performances.  Their program includes instantly recognizable classics like Mendelssohn's "Wedding March" and Les toreadors from Bizet's Carmen; the bubbly excitement of Mozart's Symphony No. 31 in D major; and lesser-known gems by Dukas and Dvorak performed by our talented woodwind, brass, and percussion students.

We remain hopeful for a return to live performances in the very near future; but in the meantime, let the artistry and talent of the NJSYO's students, shared in this virtual format, brighten your day

Beginning May 9, 2pm, please visit the Library Website  to enjoy this concert through Memorial Day (no registration necessary).

Commemorating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

From Resilience to Celebration: An In-Depth, Virtual Pictorial Journey Inside San Francisco's Beloved Chinatown

Photographs by Dick Evans, text by Kathy Chin Leong

Moderated by Gregory Yen

Newly-released photo documentary book, San Francisco's Chinatown, brings history, culture, tourism, and traditions to life with never-before-seen  images.  In this dynamic slideshow with commentary, project originator and photographer Dick Evans and New York Times freelance writer Kathy Chin Leong shed light on a community that has proven to be resilient against all odds.

For two years, Evans scoured the streets taking breathtaking photos, making friendships with merchants and non-profit leaders along the way. This is his third book on San Francisco neighborhoods. A second generation ABC (American-born Chinese) and native of San Francisco, Leong partnered with Evans and conducted more than 100 interviews. She often used her elementary Toishan dialect to connect with residents who were, at first, hesitant to talk.

Dick Evans is a San Francisco-based photographer with an interest in documenting the colorful and rapidly changing neighborhoods of the city. Born into a ranching family in Eugene, Oregon, he graduated as an engineer from Oregon State University and subsequently obtained a master’s degree in management from Stanford. He has spent his fifty-year career in the global metals sector, living in five countries and multiple locations in Africa, Europe, and North America. It was during these travels that he developed an appreciation for the diversity and richness of different cultures both global and local, and an interest in documentary photography

Kathy Chin Leong, a lifetime career journalist, covers travel, technology, business, art, architecture, and anything that piques her interest. Her writing has been published in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, National Geographic Books, Sunset Magazine, and other nationally-recognized publications. Growing up in a bi-cultural environment, Chinese at home and American at school, she is typical of many ABCs who struggled with identity issues, eventually learning to embrace their Chinese heritage. While she has travelled the globe to the Middle East, Europe, and Asia, she has rediscovered her Chinatown roots through collaboration on this book that has been the journey of a lifetime

Gregory Yen is Asian-American, a pharmacist, and a lawyer, based in New Jersey. He is highly interested in the Asian-American experience and preserving Asian-American history. As a father to two sons, he knows one of the best ways important history (such as that captured in San Francisco's Chinatown) may be passed onto the next generation would be through discussions and literature like this.

A Ceremony dedicating "Endless Possibilities Through Reading" Sculpture  and the Commemoration of the Reading Garden  will be held-in person-at Eastern Branch Library in Shrewsbury NJ.

This will not be a virtual event. Seating is  limited. Social Distancing protocols will be followed.

The beautiful art piece, created by sculptor Franco Minervini, was installed at the Eastern Branch of the Monmouth County Library in Shrewsbury, NJ.

The sculpture was created from Indiana limestone and has been placed in the new garden. It depicts a book surrounded by a circle showing the endless possibilities libraries offer.

The sculpture was made possible through a bequest from the late Charles Raffetto, as directed by the Monmouth County Library Commission members.

Much thanks to the Monmouth County Board of Commissioners, and the Library Commissioners for their generous and tireless efforts to have this statue installed for the beatification of the Reading Community.

Revisiting the Founding Fathers: Gouverneur Morris, the Forgotten Founding Father

Presented by Jennifer W. Reiss; Moderated by Donna Mansfield, Eastern Branch

Gouverneur Morris is one of our Founding Fathers, a signer of the Articles of Confederation, and the US Constitution, author of the Preamble to the Constitution, envoy to France during the French Revolution, and a Senator from New York.  Morris was one of the most outspoken critics of slavery among the Founding Fathers and also argued for the right of people to practice their chosen religion without interference.  Morris was also disabled.  His left leg was amputated after a carriage accident and he was severely burned on his right side.

Our Speaker, Jennifer W. Reiss, is a PhD candidate in history at the University of Pennsylvania, with specific interests in early modern medicine and disability, and women and gender.  Her project, currently titled “Pity That So Fine a Man Should Have Lost His Leg:" Gouverneur Morris and the Nuances of Physical Disability in Early America, attempts to understand how Morris, the early American statesman and diplomat, negotiated his multiple physical impairments alongside class and gender expectations in the early Republic. Reiss has a BA from Penn, a Master’s in History from Cambridge University, and JD from Harvard University.  She practiced law for several years before she decided to return to Penn's graduate school to study  American History.

This program is part of Revisiting the Founding Era, a four-year national initiative of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History presented in partnership with the American Library Association and the National Constitution Center, with generous support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Despite the Middle Ages being occasionally referred to as the Dark Ages, people in that era often enjoyed good times, especially at the table. Through art and archaeology, learn about medieval foods and their preparation-including a recipe for roast unicorn!--in late-medieval feasts, as well as the rules and ceremonies under which these sumptuous foods were presented and the types of entertainment guests might enjoy. Works from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Met's Cloisters Museum will highlight this talk.

Michael Norris of Armchair Art Tours received his BA in classics from the University of California at San Diego and his MA in classics and PhD in Art History at the University of California at Santa Barbara. Historically Speaking, A Virtual Lecture Series

Presented by the Monmouth County Historical Association. Co-Sponsored by the Monmouth County Library

Gary Saretzky presents 19th Century New Jersey Photographer: Gustavus Pach

The most successful 19th century photographer in Long Branch was Gustavus Pach (1845-1904), one of several brothers in the Pach Brothers, a prominent firm with more than a dozen branch studios in the Northeast U.S. Gustavus Pach began photographing in Long Branch from a mobile wagon in 1866 and opened a gallery there the following year. He is highly regarded for hundreds of scenic stereo views of Monmouth County. Pach also made thousands of fine portraits, and many of the glass negatives are at the Monmouth County Historical Association. This lecture provides a history of the Pach Brothers with an emphasis on the life and work of Gustavus Pach.

Gary D. Saretzky, archivist, educator, and photographer, worked as an archivist for more than fifty years at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, Educational Testing Service, and the Monmouth County Archives. Historically Speaking, A Virtual Lecture Series

Presented by the Monmouth County Historical Association. Co-Sponsored by the Monmouth County Library

Kevin Coyne Presents Nathaniel, William and Bruce: Three Men, Three Centuries, One Town

Local history is not just local – it intersects in powerful and surprising ways with the nation’s history, and its small stories can teach us much about those larger stories, too. Nathaniel Scudder, William Dayton, Bruce Springsteen – three men, three centuries, one town.

Nathaniel Scudder was a Princeton-educated physician who gave up his medical practice in Freehold to fight for the American colonies’ independence from Great Britain. He signed the Articles of Confederation, led his regiment at the Battle of Monmouth, and was killed by a British raiding party in the final days of the Revolution, the only member of the Continental Congress to die in combat.

William Dayton was a Princeton-educated lawyer who practiced in Freehold and was the vice-presidential nominee in 1856 on the Republican Party’s first national ticket, running with John Fremont of California. The runner-up for the Republican vice-presidential nomination that year – Abraham Lincoln – later appointed Dayton during the Civil War as ambassador to France, where he helped keep the French from joining the Confederate cause.

Freehold High School-educated Bruce Springsteen, descendant of Monmouth-born veterans of the Revolution and the Civil War, has chronicled the lives of Americans over the last 50 years in his songs and stories, and along the way has introduced his vast audience to the town he shares with Scudder and Dayton.

What can their stories – joined with all the other stories from this one small town – tell us about America’s story?

Kevin Coyne is a respected journalist and adjunct professor at the Columbia Journalism School. He has authored several books, including the acclaimed Marching Home: To War and Back with the Men of One American Town, about six WWII veterans from Freehold. He has served on the Borough Council, where he helped establish the town’s Historic Preservation Commission and has served as Freehold’s Borough historian for over twenty years.

For all of these amazing accomplishments, Kevin can more simply be described as a son of Freehold. This gives him an innate understanding of local culture that goes beyond the archives and the books. He is a storyteller and he loves history, especially local history, which shines through when he speaks about it.

A Day in the Life of a Quaranteen - Submit an article for Volunteer Hours!
    Contact: Teen Programming     mclteen@monmouthcountylib.org

An ongoing event, A Day in the Life of a Quaranteen asks for a written documentary of your life during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Entries can be essays, poems, journal entries, or written song describing your life, thoughts, and feelings about COVID-19. One to two submissions will be displayed in our quarterly teen newsletter.  One volunteer hour is possible per article for participants. Your article will need to be approved by a library staff member before you will be given service hours.  Articles need to follow the guidelines to be approved, and may be sent back to you if anything is missing.

Age: Must be between grades 7-12

Library Card: Must have a valid Monmouth County Library Card.

Service Hours Given: 1 hour per article submission upon library approval.

Limit of two submissions per person.

Submission: Please submit your article through this Google Form

Attention Parent/Guardian: It is highly recommended that your teen is responsible for all correspondence regarding the Teen Volunteer Program; starting with the review submission process and continuing throughout their volunteer service. This program strives to prepare your child for his/her first job. We feel that the more responsibility that volunteers have in the successful execution of completing their service, the better prepared he or she will be to apply for jobs and enter the workforce. When at all possible, please ask your teen to call, email, organize, and initiate!  Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
