    Contact: Programming     mcl@monmouthcountylib.org

The Rope: A True Story of Murder, Heroism, and the Dawn of the NAACP by The New York Times bestselling author  Alex Tresniowski

Live & Virtual - Join author Alex Tresniowski to discuss his true crime book, The Rope.

In the tranquil, segregated  town of Asbury Park, New Jersey, in November, 1910, a ten-year-old schoolgirl Marie Smith is brutally murdered. A black handyman and ex-boxer named Tom Williams is arrested for the crime, and quickly presumed guilty by the white mob that gathers around the town jail, ready for a lynching. But did Tom Williams really do it?

Occurring halfway between the end of the Civil War in 1865 and the formal beginning of the Civil Rights Movement in 1954, the Tom Williams case became only the third legal case ever handled by a new civil rights organization christened just one year earlier—the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or the NAACP. The Marie Smith murder sits at the historic intersection of sweeping national forces—religious extremism, class struggle, the infancy of criminal forensics, and America’s Jim Crow racial violence.

The Rope also tells the story of Ida. B. Wells, the pioneering journalist, political activist and public speaker whose bravery and persistence led directly to the creation of the NAACP. The book traces of Wells' investigation of one lynching—and dramatic, last-second prevention of another—stirred the forces that ultimately produced the most powerful civil rights organization in the world.

History and true crime collide in a murder mystery that features characters as complex and colorful as those found in the best psychological thrillers—the unconventional truth-seeking detective Ray Schindler; the sinister pedophile Frank Heidemann; the ambitious Asbury Park Sheriff Clarence Hetrick; the mysterious “sting artist,” Carl Neumeister; and the victim, Marie Smith, who represented all the innocent, vulnerable children living in turn-of-the-century America.

Gripping and powerful, The Rope is an important piece of history that gives a voice to the voiceless and resurrects a long-forgotten true crime story that speaks to the very divisions tearing at the nation’s fabric today.

Alex Tresniowski was a writer for both Time and People magazines, handling mostly human-interest stories. He is the author or coauthor of more than twenty books, including the 2005 true-crime thriller The Vendetta, which was used as a basis for the 2009 Johnny Depp movie Public Enemies

Historically Speaking, A Virtual Lecture Series

Presented by the Monmouth County Historical Association. Co-Sponsored by the Monmouth County Library

Kevin Coyne Presents Nathaniel, William and Bruce: Three Men, Three Centuries, One Town

Local history is not just local – it intersects in powerful and surprising ways with the nation’s history, and its small stories can teach us much about those larger stories, too. Nathaniel Scudder, William Dayton, Bruce Springsteen – three men, three centuries, one town.

Nathaniel Scudder was a Princeton-educated physician who gave up his medical practice in Freehold to fight for the American colonies’ independence from Great Britain. He signed the Articles of Confederation, led his regiment at the Battle of Monmouth, and was killed by a British raiding party in the final days of the Revolution, the only member of the Continental Congress to die in combat.

William Dayton was a Princeton-educated lawyer who practiced in Freehold and was the vice-presidential nominee in 1856 on the Republican Party’s first national ticket, running with John Fremont of California. The runner-up for the Republican vice-presidential nomination that year – Abraham Lincoln – later appointed Dayton during the Civil War as ambassador to France, where he helped keep the French from joining the Confederate cause.

Freehold High School-educated Bruce Springsteen, descendant of Monmouth-born veterans of the Revolution and the Civil War, has chronicled the lives of Americans over the last 50 years in his songs and stories, and along the way has introduced his vast audience to the town he shares with Scudder and Dayton.

What can their stories – joined with all the other stories from this one small town – tell us about America’s story?

Kevin Coyne is a respected journalist and adjunct professor at the Columbia Journalism School. He has authored several books, including the acclaimed Marching Home: To War and Back with the Men of One American Town, about six WWII veterans from Freehold. He has served on the Borough Council, where he helped establish the town’s Historic Preservation Commission and has served as Freehold’s Borough historian for over twenty years.

For all of these amazing accomplishments, Kevin can more simply be described as a son of Freehold. This gives him an innate understanding of local culture that goes beyond the archives and the books. He is a storyteller and he loves history, especially local history, which shines through when he speaks about it.

    Contact: Programming     mcl@monmouthcountylib.org

Please join us for an encore presentation of  Author Talk with Alex Tresniowski (originally aired earlier this month)

The Rope: A True Story of Murder, Heroism, and the Dawn of the NAACP by The New York Times bestselling author  Alex Tresniowski

Gripping and powerful, The Rope is an important piece of history that gives a voice to the voiceless and resurrects a long-forgotten true crime story that speaks to the very divisions tearing at the nation’s fabric today

Encore presentation from Monmouth Civic Chorus will be available to watch with this link through July 10, 2021.

Monmouth Civic Chorus presents American Voices: From Our Homes to Yours, a feature-length digital production. The Chorus's annual spring concerts have been drawing crowds to Monmouth County for decades. This season, in lieu of crowds, immerse yourself in a diverse selection of short works from the Americas curated by MCC Artistic Director Dr. Ryan Brandau.

The program has been recorded with love by individual singers and instrumentalists in their homes and produced into a seamless whole by skilled audio and visual engineers. Songs performed by the whole choir are woven together with poetry, short interview segments, solo and small ensemble performances, and more. The performance is hosted by Dr. Brandau from home with the same charismatic tone that audiences have come to expect in the concert hall.

Monmouth Civic Chorus is a community chorus in Monmouth County, New Jersey dedicated to artistic excellence. In addition to singing locally, they have brought the finest in choral music to audiences around the world since 1949.

Commemorate Juneteenth! Explore The Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture  collaborative collection shared with Monmouth County Library - Available to view on the Library website

The Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, but not implemented in places under Confederate Control. Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as "Juneteenth," by the newly freed people in Texas.

Juneteenth is a time to celebrate, gather as a family, reflect on the past and look to the future. The Monmouth County Library, together with the National Museum of African American History and Culture, invites you to engage in your history and discover ways to celebrate this holiday.

🔴Smithsonian Online Virtual Archives offers a tour through Emancipation Documents, for example, you will find a  Certificate of Freedom for Joseph Trammell

🔴Explore, learn and engage with the National Museum of African American History and Culture through numerous digital resources. Link here for more:

Topics may be filtered by subject or era, offering over 1,200 videos, 400+ Primary Source documents which include famous speeches, Segregation and Integration Documents, Slavery and Abolition Documents, Maps and Charts, including Migration & Settlement Maps, and more.

The Smithsonian Institution was established with funds from James Smithson (1765–1829), a British scientist who left his estate to the United States to found “at Washington, under the name of the Smithsonian Institution, an establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge.”  Once established, the Smithsonian became part of the process of developing an American national identity—an identity rooted in exploration, innovation, and a unique American style. That process continues today as the Smithsonian looks toward the future.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture, opened on September 24, 2016, is a place where all Americans can learn about the richness and diversity of the African American experience, what it means to their lives, and how it helped us shape this nation.

We are lucky in New Jersey to have a beautiful shoreline including exceptional barrier beaches and bays. Although we may be best known for the recreational use of our beaches, we are blessed with some amazing natural areas that include Cape May, Sandy Hook and Island Beach State Park.

Presenter Jim Peck was the Education Director for the American Littoral Society, a coastal conservation group on Sandy Hook, for three years. He spent all his time educating children and adults about our fragile and amazing coastline. His talk will cover such topics as barrier beaches, the nature and origin of our sand, the effect of jetties, primary and secondary dunes, beach grass, shore birds, estuaries, maritime forests, horseshoe crabs and red knots, lighthouses, shells, ocean life and much more. He will share his knowledge, pictures and stories during this virtual presentation.
