Munroe Saturday Nights Presents:
“A Revolutionary Encounter in London” – An Online Play Reading
Saturday, May 8th
Join Munroe Saturday Nights for A Revolutionary Encounter in London – A one-act play by Debbie Wiess about the astounding little-known meeting of 2 Colonial Americans in 1770s London. Saturday, May 8th at 7:30pm.
A Revolutionary Encounter in London written by Debbie Wiess is a 75-minute 3-character one-act play about the largely unknown meeting of enslaved African-American poet Phillis Wheatley and American Founding Father Benjamin Franklin. It was their first and only meeting, and took place in London in 1773, when she was there to help promote the publication of her book of poetry Poems of Various Subjects, Religious and Moral to come out a few months later in early September.
Very little has been written about their meeting, and biographies about Franklin generally omit any reference to it. The two parties themselves only refer to their meeting briefly in a few letters to friends or family. Much research was done by the author to flesh out the characters and imagine what these two iconic figures from early American history would say to each other, though it certainly must have been a cordial meeting. Despite seeming to be polar opposites, they had much in common and shared many interests. They were also very much celebrated in their day.
The author is honored to be presenting the complete play for the first time, updated and unabridged, at the Munroe Center for the Arts in her hometown of Lexington, MA. Extracts of an earlier draft were presented in a special event at the Boston Athenaeum February 2020, and the first half of a later draft was presented on zoom in September 2020 by Moving Parts Paris.
