Raku Workshop with Mike Roche at Munroe Center for the Arts
Tuesday, October 12 5:30pm - 8:30pm
Saturday October 23 10:00am - 4:00pm
Instructor - Mike Roche
Join Mike for a two-part ceramics workshop celebrating the art of Raku. Derived from a traditional Japanese firing process, this American adaptation creates wild and beautiful surfaces within a matter of hours. Participants will spend one evening making work and learning about the history and practice and an afternoon glazing and firing the wares. As per the process, we will fire the clayworks up to 1800 degrees fahrenheit and quickly remove them from the kiln. They will then be placed in a post-reduction chamber where we will surround them with organic combustibles which will burn and leave their distinct mark on the clay and glaze. Every piece yields unpredictable and unique results only to be obtained through this particular firing process. Be ready to experiment and push the boundaries on what you thought was possible in clay.
