Ernest Shackleton and the Age of Antarctic Exploration

Tuesday May 9, 2023

Ernest Shackleton and the Age of Antarctic Exploration presented by Greg Caggiano

The weather is getting warmer, but the history is freezing!
Join historian Greg Caggiano for a look at Ernest Shackleton's ill-fated Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914. It is one of the greatest and most harrowing stories of survival and courage in the history of exploration. Learn the background information of the voyage, what went wrong, and how he and his crew refused to quit even when shipwrecked in total isolation at the bottom of the world. This lecture was first offered in 2022, in commemoration of the recent discovery of Shackleton's long-lost ship, the Endurance. In October of last year, Greg received the Invitational Lecture Grant Award from the Friends of Lifelong Learning for this presentation at Brookdale Community College. The past will come alive in this exciting talk.
Greg Caggiano is a published author, historian, lecturer, and consultant. He holds a degree in history from New Jersey City University and NJ State teaching certifications in history and elementary education. Since 2014, Greg has worked as an instructor for Brookdale Community College in their Lifelong Learning department and as a field guide for their Ocean Institute on Sandy Hook, which focuses on local marine life, maritime history, and the history of the US Military’s presence at Fort Hancock. In his spare time, he has served on the Board of Directors of two museums: the Proprietary House in Perth Amboy, and most recently the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society, housed at the Strauss Mansion Museum. A firm believer in volunteering and giving back to the community, he has helped fundraise tens of thousands of dollars for historic preservation over the years.
