Bill & Chu: Music for Earth DayThursday April 22, 2021
7:00 PM until 8:00 PM
Join us for a YouTube video premiere of viola-bass duo Susan Bill and Carion Chu!
Susan Bill and Carion Chu met while playing in Cape Cod Symphony and discovered a strong affinity for playing different styles of music as a viola-bass duo. Bill & Chu have developed a concert program which draws equally from the great classical repertoire and the great American songbook, and have incorporated keyboards and vocals along the way. They are equally at home playing at assisted living places, street fairs, and concert halls.
Susan Bill is a native of Maine. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Maine and holds a master's degree in viola from the Boston Conservatory of Music. She has been an active member of Boston's free-lance music community for many years, playing with such groups as the Cape Cod Symphony, New Hampshire Symphony, Vermont Symphony, Portland Symphony, Central Mass. Symphony, and others. She teaches violin and viola both privately and in the QPS string program, and also at EKS Music School in Quincy Center. She founded the Atlantic Youth Orchestra and serves as its conductor and music director, and has since served as conductor to other groups. She also coaches the Boston City-Wide String Orchestra in Roxbury. Ms. Bill has been a church musician all her life and was organist and choir director at St. Chrysostom's Episcopal Church in Wollaston before assuming the position she now holds, that of organist and director of music at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Braintree.
Carion Chu was born in Hong Kong. Her fascination with the sound of the double bass beckoned her to take up the instrument when she was a teenager. She immediately joined local youth orchestra and other groups. She studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in England with Rodney Slatford, and various courses in Italy studied with Franco Petracchi. She had performed in England, France, Israel, Cypress, Australia, Italy, US and Canada. In 1988 Carion moved to the Boston area and is known to both symphonic and chamber music audiences. She is currently principal bass with Cape Cod Symphony, also perform with Plymouth Philharmonic, Symphony by the sea and South Florida Symphony. She lives in Milton, Massachusetts.
