Virtual Brown Bag Book ClubWednesday August 11, 2021
12:00 PM until 1:00 PM
This month's selection is Be Frank with Me by Julia Claiborne Johnson. The Virtual Brown Bag Book Club meeting will be held via Zoom, 12:00-1:00 p.m. on August 11th, the second Wednesday of the month. The virtual meeting room will open at 11:50 a.m. for anyone who would like to arrive early and get settled with audio and video up and running.
This virtual meeting is open to new members and guests, but advance registration is required by Tuesday, August 10th. The Zoom invite will be mailed only to registered participants, one day before the meeting date.
A sparkling talent makes her fiction debut with this infectious novel that combines the charming pluck of Eloise, the poignant psychological quirks of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and the page-turning spirit of Where’d You Go, Bernadette.
Reclusive literary legend M. M. “Mimi” Banning has been holed up in her Bel Air mansion for years. But after falling prey to a Bernie Madoff-style ponzi scheme, she’s flat broke. Now Mimi must write a new book for the first time in decades, and to ensure the timely delivery of her manuscript, her New York publisher sends an assistant to monitor her progress. The prickly Mimi reluctantly complies—with a few stipulations: No Ivy-Leaguers or English majors. Must drive, cook, tidy. Computer whiz. Good with kids. Quiet, discreet, sane.
When Alice Whitley arrives at the Banning mansion, she’s put to work right away—as a full-time companion to Frank, the writer’s eccentric nine-year-old, a boy with the wit of Noel Coward, the wardrobe of a 1930s movie star, and very little in common with his fellow fourth-graders.
The monthly selection is available as a downloadable e-book in the library's Hoopla collection: https://www.hoopladigital.com/title/12308961. You must have a Thayer Public Library card to access the Thayer Public Library's Hoopla collection, but if you have a library card from a different library that offers Hoopla, you can also find it in your library's Hoopla collection. Hoopla has no holds, no waiting, so you will be able to borrow the book right away.
Copies of the print edition in regular and large-print will be available at the library one month ahead of the meeting. Just ask for the Brown Bag Book Club selection at the Circulation Desk on the Main Level.
Please check our current hours before visiting the library, and email Laurie at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are having trouble borrowing a copy of the book.
