Women's Work: A Discussion with Julie Zachuk-Ryan
Julie will talk about how women’s work is, in our modern tradition, chronically undervalued, though that wasn’t always true. When we think about women’s work today, we think about hobbies, which are treated as trivial. But those skills used to be a vital part of the survival of a household and a family. When we dismiss those skills now, we dismiss the generations of women who used their work to express themselves, their beliefs, and their feelings. My work aims to honor the tradition of quilting and the generations of women who made their own stitches in fabric before me.

Presenter Bio
Julie is a Pittsburgh native who lived abroad for most of her life. Back in her hometown, she has settled into a life surrounded by fabric. She teaches quilting, hand-sewing and embroidery, and other sewing skills, repairs quilts, and creates modern traditional quilts and textile artworks for sale.
