'Yours Truly' book discussion with Bob Hagerty

James R. (Bob) Hagerty presents his new book, “Yours Truly,” a guide to writing life stories, listed by the Washington Post in December as one of 10 “noteworthy” books published that month.

Bob will explain why and how to write or record your own story, or help family members and friends write theirs. His advice: Don’t leave your story to be dashed off by friends or relatives after you die. For all their good intentions, they’re likely to make a hash of it.

No one else can tell your story as well as you can, and telling that story isn’t nearly so difficult as it sounds.

Research shows that people typically feel better after telling their stories. Thinking about what you did and why also is a good way to help you determine whether you’re on the right path. It isn’t too late to improve the narrative.

Hagerty will urge you to write about both your triumphs and disasters, while throwing in whatever humor you’ve found along the way.

Bob Hagerty has been a reporter and editor for The Wall Street Journal for 40 years on three continents. For the past 17 years, he has lived in Mt. Lebanon, where he supports the library by co-leading beer-tasting fundraisers and directing a Scrabble club. As the Journal’s only full-time staff obituary writer, he writes the life stories of other people from all over the world every week. He is known for writing about people who weren’t famous but lived fascinating lives. His motto: If obituaries can’t be fun, what’s the point of dying?
