David Ruggles

This event was rescheduled from Tues. Feb. 13.

In the 1830s, there was no fiercer advocate for abolition and freedom than David Ruggles.  He died in 1849 at the very young age of 39.  Perhaps his early death explains why his contributions are often overlooked, depriving him of the credit he richly deserves.

Intrepid historical researcher Tom Schuch recently embarked on an effort to clarify Ruggles’ family history.  He found more than he bargained for!  He not only determined that David Ruggles was born in Lyme, but he discovered some surprising facts about his family origin that link his family to local enslavement, emancipation, and one of the most famous local stories of the American Revolution:  the 1779 confiscation of the huge Salem ‘plantation’ owned by the Tory Loyalist, Col. William Browne.  Tom Schuch will introduce historical documents, including maps, deeds, probate records and correspondence that support his findings.  This information may potentially ‘change the narrative’ on Ruggles and his family, and it may help to elevate his name into its proper historic place in American history.

Free and open to all.

Registration is suggested as seating is limited and is available one month prior to the event.

We have partnered with Old Tyme Toys for Game Night.  This month they will teach Rolling Realms at the library.

In Rolling Realms, players compete to earn the most stars over 3 rounds in a series of minigames (there are 11 different “realms” included in the game). This is a roll-and-write game, meaning that players will write on the game components using dry-erase markers.  Each turn, one player rolls 2 dice, and all players use the dice results on their realm cards to generate resources and earn stars. After 3 rounds, the player with the most stars wins!  This game is for 1-6 players ages 14+ and takes about 30 min. to play.

Free and open to all.

Registration is suggested as seating is limited and is available one month prior to the event.

Solar Eclipse

On April 8th, 2024 CT will experience an almost total Solar Eclipse.  This presentation will cover safety precautions, including proper use of a telescope to view the eclipse.  Also we will describe how an eclipse occurs, a bit of history about previous eclipses, what the Sun, our very own star is actually doing.  Finally we'll talk about how to photograph the event with a telescope and what to look for.

Our presenter is Geoff McLean, a NASA Solar System Ambassador, member of the Thames Amateur Astronomical Society, Lead Night Sky Ranger for The Last Green Valley, and avid amateur astronomer and astrophotographer.

Solar eclipse glasses will be given to participants.
