YA ZOOM: OSMS Book Chat

You’re invited to take part in OSMS’s 7th grade book chat! The 7th graders at OSMS have been researching themes of Tolerance and Empathy through the historical event of the Holocaust.  We have been questioning how learning about the past can help us now and in the future.  In the next few weeks, we will be reading novels about the Holocaust with a culminating book chat and want to explore them further with you!

Please join our book club by signing up to read one of the following books:

Click here to find a summary of each book.  (Haga clic a la izquierda para ver un resumen de los libros.)

Number the Stars by Lois Lowry

Milkweed by Jerry Spinelli

Resistance byJennifer Nielsen

The Berlin Boxing Club by Rob Sharenow

Refugee by Alan Gratz

Prisoner B-3087 by Alan Gratz

The Book Thief  by Markus Zusak

Girl in the Blue Coat by Monica Hesse

The Winter Horses  by Philip Kerr

The Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich, Albert Hackett (play)

What we would need from you:

  • Sign up HERE to read one of the books.

  • Find your book at a local library...(we know a good one).. or bookstore and read it by February 15th.

(If you have trouble obtaining the book, please let us know- we may have extra copies for lending)

  • Join us on February 15 at 1 pm either virtually or in person for the book chat.

All Ages: Besa: A Code of Honor – Muslim Albanians who Rescued Jews during the Holocaust

Besa: A Code of Honor – Muslim Albanians who Rescued Jews during the Holocaust is about the Righteous Among the Nations – non-Jews who risked their lives saving Jews during the Holocaust.

This traveling exhibit is comprised of portraits and text about Muslim families in Albania who saved Jews during the Holocaust, converging between two seemingly opposed worlds. Prior to World War II, some 200 Jews lived in Albania. In 1943, the Albanian population refused to comply with Nazis’ orders to turn over lists of Jews residing in Albania. The remarkable assistance afforded to the Jews was grounded in Besa, a code of honor. Besa means literally “to keep the promise.” One who acts according to Besa is someone who keeps his word, someone to whom one can trust one’s life and the lives of one’s family. Impressively, there were more Jews in Albania at the end of the war than beforehand. This very human story, told through these sensitive portraits combines to highlight a little-known, but a remarkable aspect of the Holocaust. This exhibit was displayed at the United Nations in 2008.
This program is free and open to all, Caregiver Guidance is suggested for children

Empowering Women Towards & in Retirement

While savings, health, cost of living, and lifestyle expectations are major factors, research shows that gender can play a role in retirement planning and that women may have additional challenges to be considered.

Topics discussed in this educational workshop:

  • How might my retirement plan change due to divorce or outliving my spouse?
  • How does survivorship on pensions and social security work?
  • How taxes can play a major role in the successful outcome of my future goals"
  • Market investments and sequence of return.  How are they a key factor in meeting expectations?
  • Navigating the potential challenges of life changes to a successful conclusion.
  • Wills, trusts, beneficiaries and preparing for a worthwhile legacy plan.

Presented by representatives of USA Financial and Tax Services.

Free and open to all.

Registration is suggested as seating is limited and is available one month prior to the event.
