Maame by Jessica George
HYBRID Program
For the past eight years, Maddie has been the primary caretaker for her father, who is suffering from a severe case of Parkinson's. She sacrificed her chance to move away to college, chase her dream career, and pursue a romantic relationship while her mother spent year-long stints in Ghana managing the family business, and her brother did his own thing. But when her mother returns and suggests Maddie move out while she takes care of her husband, Maddie is confronted with the unmet milestones of adolescence and young adulthood, and no guidance on where to start.
Jessica George's debut novel deals with the themes of our time with humor and poignancy: from familial duty and racism, to the complexity of love, and the life-saving power of friendship. Most importantly, it explores what it feels like to be torn between two homes and cultures, and it celebrates finally being able to find where you belong.

"It’s a Wonderful Life" is one of the most popular motion pictures ever made. It was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and has been recognized by the American Film Institute as one of the 100 best American films ever made. James Stewart and Frank Capra proclaimed this classic to be their personal favorite. The charming and, at times, harrowing story of George Bailey and his life-altering tribulations in Bedford Falls are well known. In this lecture, we will explore the complex backstory of how "It’s a Wonderful Life came" to fruition. Presented by Sal St. George.
A screening of the film will take place as part of our Friday Movie series on December 22 at 1:00 PM. Registration for the lecture is ongoing.

HYBRID PROGRAM
Radio City Music Hall is the exalted site of the prolific author’s latest thrilling historical fiction novel which takes place in the 1950s, when a serial bomber paralyzed New York City. Marion, a young woman who decides to audition to become a famous Rockette, finds herself facing the tremendous pressure to conform both within the rigidly synchronized dance group and under constrictive gender expectations. While Marion's magnetism and superior talent make her exceptional, they also make her an easy target for the attention-seeking terrorist. Frustrated by the lack of progress made by the police, Marion enlists perceptive young doctor Peter, a character modeled after the real psychiatrist who pioneered criminal profiling, was crucial to the Mad Bomber's capture, and provided insight into the search for the bomber. Davis masterfully draws the story together, setting the scene for a cinematic conclusion.
Discussion will be led by Marialisa Arnold, Head of Reader Services Librarian.
Walk-ins welcome. Register to receive Zoom information.
