RSVP to bplreadersadvisory@baldwinpl.org. Password is required.

The book is available on OverDrive and at the Circulation Desk one month prior to the program – place a request by calling 223-6228, x145.

(HYBRID) Literary Book Discussion with Christopher Woods

Monday, July 12th from 7:00 - 8:30 PM

The Tin Drum by Gunter Grass will be discussed. Grass was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. His darkly satiric novel takes place in the “Free City” of Danzig during the years before and through World War II and its aftermath.

It tells the story of a three-year-old boy, Oskar, who refuses to physically grow up. The book is an early version of magical realism, as Oskar navigates through turbulent times, testing the limits and perceptions between sanity and insanity, both in Oskar and the world in which he lives.

This selection is available on OverDrive and at the Circulation Desk one month prior to the program. Place a request by calling 223-6228, ext. 145.

This hybrid program will be presented both at the Library and online through Zoom. To register, email bplreadersadvisory@baldwinpl.org. When you RSVP, please let us know if you will be coming to the Library or will need the Zoom password.

(HYBRID) Classic Film Discussion with Christopher Woods

Monday, July 19th from 7:00 - 8:30 PM

The African Queen (1951) will be discussed.

This John Huston film is one of his most highly regarded works. In this rollicking, comic adventure, Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart (Oscar for Best Actor) portray a mismatched pair set to avenge the outrages of German forces at the start of World War I in a remote part of Africa. Partially shot on location, the pairing of the missionary spinster and the working-class river rat gives us a surprisingly touching and thoroughly engaging story that leads to love and mutual respect.

View the film at home; available on Kanopy (free streaming service - information on access is available on the Library’s website). DVD is also available for request by contacting 223-6228, ext. 145.

This hybrid program will be presented both at the Library and online through Zoom. To register, email bplreadersadvisory@baldwinpl.org. When you RSVP, please let us know if you will be coming to the Library or will need the Zoom password.

(HYBRID) Literary Book Discussion with Christopher Woods

Villette by Charlotte Bronte will be discussed.

Charlotte Brontë’s final and perhaps her finest novel, Villette presents the fascinating psychological story of Lucy Snowe, who was left orphaned and without family, or a home, moves from England to the fictional title city in what is presumed to be Belgium. At age 23, she begins the life of a frugal, reserved, and isolated schoolteacher. Brontë uses underlying humor and rich symbolism in a gothic novel setting with a variety of quirky characters and plot twists to follow Lucy’s quest for acceptance and love.

This novel is available on OverDrive and at the Circulation Desk one month prior to the program. Place a request by calling 223-6228, ext. 145.

Facilitator: Christopher Woods.

This hybrid program will be presented both at the Library and online through Zoom. To register, email
