VIRTUAL: The Discovery of a Masterpiece
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Zoom Webinar
The host of this program, Mallory Mortillaro, serves as the Curator of Collections for the Hartley Dodge Foundation in Madison, NJ. While she was cataloging the artwork housed inside of the Hartley Dodge Memorial she uncovered a masterpiece that had been lost to the art world since the 1930’s. After a year of research the piece was authenticated as an official work by Auguste Rodin. Mallory will share the story of how a simple art cataloging project evolved into a search for a mysterious piece’s provenance, and became one of the biggest art finds in recent history.

Speaker Biography:

Mallory Mortillaro serves as the Curator of Collections for the Hartley Dodge Foundation.  In this position she worked to authenticate an original Rodin sculpture, lost to the art world since the 1930’s.  Mallory holds a BA and MAT, both from Drew University.  She balances her work as an Art Historian with teaching 7th grade English.  She lives in Whippany, New Jersey with her husband.

We'll share recently discovered details on the poor financial status of the Chicago Bears in the 1920s and 30s and how the owner of the rival Chicago Cardinals loaned Bears' owner George Halas the funding to keep his team afloat.

Books will be available to purchase and autographed by the author!

Writing Gatsby
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

In-Person Event

The Great Gatsby has sold 25 million copies worldwide and sells 500, 000 copies annually. The book has been made into three movies and produced for the theatre. It is considered the Greatest American Novel ever written.

Yet, the story of how The Great Gatsby was written has not been told except as embedded chapters of much larger biographies. This story is one of heartbreak, infidelity, struggle, alcoholism, financial hardship, and one man’s perseverance to be faithful to the raw diamond of his talent in circumstances that would have crushed others. The story of the writing of The Great Gatsby is a story in itself.

Fitzgerald had descended into an alcoholic run of parties on Great Neck, NY, where he and Zelda had taken a home. His main source of income was writing for the “slicks” or magazines of the day the main source being the Saturday Evening Post where Fitzgerald’s name on a story got him as high as four thousand dollars. Then on May 1, 1924, he, Zelda, and baby daughter Scottie quietly slipped away from New York on a “dry” steamer to France, the writer in search of sobriety, sanity, and his muse, resulting on the publication of The Great Gatsby a year later.

Presented by local author William Hazelgrove - books are available for purchase.

VIRTUAL: The Green Book
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Zoom Webinar

In the 20th century, it could be extremely dangerous for people of color to travel. Many businesses would not provide service to people of color and would make clear they served "whites only." For nearly 30 years, a guide initially called the "Negro Traveler Green Book" offered advice about safe places to eat and sleep. Victor Hugo Green and later his wife Alma published this guide from 1936-1966. Learn about its role in the struggle for civil rights during this virtual slide presentation by Karen Hall, Executive Director of the Glen Ellyn Historical Society.

VIRTUAL: The Getty Villa - Paradise on the Pacific
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Zoom Webinar

At one time the world's richest man, J. Paul Getty amassed an extensive collection of art and antiquities.

Originally inspired by the ancient Villa de Papyri, a 30,000 square foot villa on the Bay of Naples in Herculaneum, Getty's home in the Los Angeles area originally displayed such diverse objects as Old Master paintings, French decorative arts, and antique furniture. Today, the home (now called The Getty Villa) has become a state-of-the-art center for the study of ancient Greek, Roman, and Etruscan culture.

The slide lecture features stunning images of Getty Villa architecture, gardens, site and collection highlights. The presentation will reveal the renovations to the original museum as well as the addition of several new elements including a Greek style theater. In addition, the presenter will discuss recent efforts by the Getty to repatriate objects from its collection of antiquities.

Presented by Jeff Mishur, owner of Art Excursions, a company that provides private guiding in Chicago; lectures; and boutique art and culture tours in the United States.
