VIRTUAL: When The Music Died…The 50th Anniversary of The Beatles Break-Up
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Zoom webinar

It was 50 years ago in spring/summer of 1970 that the Beatles called it quits.  Incredibly, it was only 6 years earlier that the Beatles exploded in America on the Ed Sullivan Show.   However, in that brief period they became - and remain - the world’s most iconic band thanks to a treasure chest of memorable songs and an uncanny ability to chart fresh musical direction with every new release.  Using performance and interview clips we’ll investigate the reasons it all fell apart 50 years ago and what – if anything - could have been done to keep the band intact.

Presented by Gary Wenstrup, who teaches pop music history at several colleges' Continuing Education Departments including Oakton, Harper, and College of DuPage.

The Bears and The Cardinals: The Forgotten History of the NFL’s Oldest Teams
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Join local author Joe Ziemba (When Football Was Football) to celebrate the National Football League’s 100th anniversary in 2020 with an unusual look at the strange early history of the oldest teams in the NFL: The Bears and the Cardinals.

Back in the early days of professional football, when both teams were based in Chicago, the Bears and Cardinals competed each season for Windy City gridiron supremacy. These battles were marked by fierce, physical competition, numerous fights, and even a bit of underworld presence. Along the way, we’ll learn that both teams nearly went bankrupt in the 1920s, how a group of gangsters disrupted a game between the two clubs, and why the owner of the Cardinals saved Bears’ founder George Halas from losing his franchise. What would the Chicago area do today without the Bears? The two teams are the only original clubs from the inception of the NFL in 1920 and their combined histories in Chicago provide a multitude of stories and legends to ensure a memorable evening for both football fans and lovers of Chicago history! Recommended for all ages.

The Pilgrims and The First Thanksgiving
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

The Noble Train
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Join us for a special presentation by local author William Hazelgrove on his latest narrative non-fiction book, Henry Knox's Noble Train: The Story of a Boston Bookseller's Heroic Expedition That Saved the American Revolution

During the brutal winter of 1775-1776, an untested Boston bookseller named Henry Knox commandeered an oxen train hauling sixty tons of cannons and other artillery from Fort Ticonderoga near the Canadian border. He and his men journeyed some three hundred miles south and east over frozen, often-treacherous terrain to supply George Washington for his attack of British troops occupying Boston. The result was the British surrender of Boston and the first major victory for the Colonial Army. This is one of the great stories of the American Revolution, still little known by comparison with the more famous battles of Concord, Lexington, and Bunker Hill. An exciting tale of daunting odds and undaunted determination highlighting a pivotal episode that changed history.

The Irony of Festivus
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Celebrated annually on December 23, Festivus was created by writers of the TV series Seinfeld. This holiday "for the rest of us" as symbolized by a silver pole devoid of decoration mocks Christmas and all the commercialism that accompanies it. The irony, of course, is that Festivus was invented to bring in (and it still makes) a massive profit at Christmastime.

Join Dr. Kelli Marshall to learn more about the origins of this silly holiday and its place in popular culture, Chicago's included. A screening of the Seinfeld episode featuring Festivus will precede the lecture.
