9:00 AM - 9:00 PM

Choose between the Blinky POV or Tap-Tempo Metronome kit.

Pick up your Blinky POV kit and program a fun message to display. One you're done assembling it, visit the Blinky Programmer to write your message! * Soldering iron required for this craft *

The Tap-Tempo Metronome is a tap-controlled or tap-tempo metronome and “beat looper.” You tap the piezo speaker to set the rhythm. The display shows the beats per minute, and the two buttons adjust the speed. You can tap patterns into it, currently up to 12 beats long. As long as you tap the pattern in three times, it jumps in and continues beeping in that rhythm.

REGISTRATION BEGINS ON MONDAY. JULY 12.  Please email Katie Yager at kyager@mybpl.org if you're interested in this craft project.

VIRTUAL: The Race to Save Titanic
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Zoom Webinar

William Hazelgrove's new narrative non-fiction book is out now!

160 Minutes The Race to Save the Titanic is a knight’s mission in the dead of a freezing night on the icy Atlantic. It is two men huddled in the transmitting room sending out their plea for assistance with distant ships snatching the meaning and interpreting those dots and dashes in a myriad of different ways relaying it on to a shocked world. It is the actions in Britain and New York and the ships steaming toward the stricken ship of dreams with the only thought to reach her before people succumbed to the twenty-five-degree water. The natural drama of Titanic’s short-lived death throes is juxtaposed against this race against time by the other ships who could affect the outcome and the tragic consequences of the missed opportunities where the fifteen hundred might have been saved.

The race to save the largest ship in the word would begin at 11:40 PM on April 14 when the iceberg was struck and would end at 2:20 am March 15 when her lights blinked out and left 1500 people thrashing in 25-degree water. Although the race to save Titanic survivors would stretch on beyond this, most people in the water would die, but the amazing thing is that of the 2229 people, 710 did not and this was the success of the Titanic rescue effort.

VIRTUAL: The Sinking of the SS Andrea Doria
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Zoom Webinar

It is 11:10 p.m. on Wednesday, July 25, 1956. A heavy fog has settled over the North Atlantic, 45 miles south of the island of Nantucket. The Italian passenger liner, the SS Andrea Doria, is heading westbound, relying on its radar screens to cut its way through the thick fog of the evening. Little does its captain realize, there is eminent danger that lies directly ahead. The Swedish passenger liner, the MS Stockholm, is heading eastbound directly towards them! Hidden from their view by the thick fog, both passenger liners are now heading for a tragic encounter at speeds too fast to avoid the ultimate collision. After being smashed 30 feet into its starboard side, the Andrea Doria pulls loose, lists sharply, and starts to sink to the bottom of the ocean, endangering the lives of all on board. The result was the loss of 46 passengers and crew members on the SS Andrea Doria and 5 crew members on the MS Stockholm. Many of the 1,660 passengers rescued from the capsizing Andrea Doria also had to fight their way off the sinking ship, facing the tremendous odds, without the use of lifeboats.

Historian, Jim Gibbons, will present the story of, “The Sinking of the SS Andrea Doria,” and how it collided in a thick fog with the MS Stockholm. Gibbons will take you through that terrible night of extreme tragedy that rocked maritime history!

VIRTUAL - Edouard Manet: Painter of Modern Life
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
On the Same Page

Edouard Manet took on the conservative art world in Paris by painting modern life as opposed to “accepted” subjects. By challenging the French academic system Manet inspired Morisot, Renoir, Monet and other Impressionists. In this lecture, learn about important works in Manet's oeuvre including Luncheon on the Grass, The Balcony and A Bar at the Folies-Bergère.

Art historian Jeff Mishur presents this lecture. Mishur is co-owner of Art Excursions, a company that provides private guiding in Chicago; boutique art and culture tours in the United States; and lectures on a wide range of subjects. A popular speaker about art historical and travel topics, he has his M.A. in Art History from Northern Illinois University and has taught at the university level for many years.
