Wednesday Evening Book Discussion

Our October pick is The Orphan's Tale by Pam Jenoff.

Sixteen-year-old Noa has been cast out in disgrace after becoming pregnant by a Nazi soldier and being forced to give up her baby. She lives above a small rail station, which she cleans in order to earn her keep… When Noa discovers a boxcar containing dozens of Jewish infants bound for a concentration camp, she is reminded of the child that was taken from her. And in a moment that will change the course of her life, she snatches one of the babies and flees into the snowy night. Noa finds refuge with a German circus, but she must learn the flying trapeze act so she can blend in undetected, spurning the resentment of the lead aerialist, Astrid. At first rivals, Noa and Astrid soon forge a powerful bond. But as the facade that protects them proves increasingly tenuous, Noa and Astrid must decide whether their friendship is enough to save one another—or if the secrets that burn between them will destroy everything.

Books are available at the circulation desk one month before the discussion. No registration necessary and everyone is welcome!

The Biographer's Dilemma

The Biographer's Dilemma:  Telling the Stories of the Unknown Women who Introduced Emily Dickinson to the World.

Presentation by Julie Dobrow, author of After Emily: Two Remarkable Women and the Legacy of America's Greatest Poet.

“An elegant recovery of the two women without whom ‘Because I could not stop for Death’ likely wouldn’t be required reading for American high school students. . . . The author sensitively explores the (much-criticized) editorial choices Todd made and the question of who was responsible for the ‘legend’ of Emily-the-recluse-in-white. . . . [A] fresh, remarkable account.”

—Kirkus Reviews, starred review

“[A]stonishing new research . . . Dobrow’s chronicle will draw readers back to Dickinson, whom Dobrow rightly names as American’s greatest poet.”

—Booklist, starred review

Wednesday Evening Book Discussion

Our pick this month is One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd by Jim Fergus.

Based on an actual historical event but told through fictional diaries, this is the story of a remarkable woman who travels west in 1875 and marries the chief of the Cheyenne Nation. One thousand white women begins with May Dodd's journey west into the unknown. Yet the unknown is a far better fate than the life she left behind. Committed to an insane asylum by her blue-blood family for the crime of loving a man beneath her station, May finds that her only hope of freedom is to participate in a secret government program whereby women from the 'civilized' world become the brides of Cheyenne warriors. What follows is the story of May's breathtaking adventures: her brief, passionate romance with the gallant young army captain John Bourke; her marriage to the great chief Little Wolf; and her conflict of being caught between two worlds, loving two men, living two lives.

Copies of the book are available one month in advance at the circulation desk. No registration necessary and everyone is welcome!

Cookbook Club

Our cookbook this month is Jerusalem: A Cookbook by Yotam Ottolenghi.

"In Jerusalem, Yotam Ottolenghi and Sami Tamimi explore  the vibrant cuisine of their home city--with its diverse Muslim, Jewish, and Christian communities. Both men were born in Jerusalem in the same year--Tamimi on the Arab east side and Ottolenghi in the Jewish west. This stunning cookbook offers 120 recipes from their unique cross-cultural perspective, from inventive vegetable dishes to sweet, rich desserts. With five bustling restaurants in London and two stellar cookbooks, Ottolenghi is one of the most respected chefs in the world; in Jerusalem, he and Tamimi have collaborated to produce their most personal cookbook yet."

Copies of the cookbook will be available one month before our meeting. Everyone is welcome, but you must register and let us know what recipe you will be bringing.
