Side By Side an Exhibit of Fiber Art

On view in the Gathering Room from September 24 – October 29, 2021

Side by Side is an exhibit by FiberWorks, a group of artists based in Western Connecticut who create a range of work combining fiber and other materials. Each artist uses various techniques to incorporate stitching, painting, quilting, weaving and collaging.

In this year’s show each artist created two individual pieces arranged to produce a single finished piece. We know there is power in numbers, even if it is only two. Separately two pieces may have a small presence, but united, they make a stronger statement.  Together they are visually more powerful because the differences pique our curiosity to look more closely.

Titanic - A Date with Destiny

**NOTE** The start time for this program has been rescheduled from 6:00 PM to to 7:00 PM

Listen as John Cilio, a six-time author, tells the Titanic story through vintage photographs and a well-researched discussion about its celebrated construction which employed thousands during difficult times, the cruise, and the final plunge to the depths of the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Tour some of the ship's cabins, dining rooms, and lounges through vintage photographs and learn about some people on board.
  • Among the thousands who met their fate aboard the Titanic's maiden voyage was 33 Connecticut-bound men and women. Learn about all those that survived and reached their final destination.
  • Did you know the Titanic's Chief barber was the only American crewman aboard.  Hear how he inadvertently survived the event.
  • The sinking was tragic, yet its loss fueled a dramatic increase in the safety of transatlantic travel.

This talk just might change your viewpoint of that fateful date with destiny

Conversations: Truth, Myth, & Democracy
The Mark Twain Library and the Redding League of Women Voters are proud to present the third installment of our series “Conversations: Truth, Myth & Democracy” with Dr. Yuval Levin of the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) and Dr. William Galston of the Brookings Institution, moderated by Western Connecticut State University’s Dr. Daniel Barrett. This virtual discussion is between two noted social and political thinkers who will examine the causes and consequences of a divided America and explore how a revival of some of the principles of our political tradition can contribute to solving our national challenges.

The Conversations series is a grassroots effort that continues to examine the underlying meaning of our democracy and how democracy matters even when we have different ideas about what it should look like. The focus is on addressing the difficult issues of truth telling and myth busting by bringing much-needed community conversations to help promote education, informed dialogue and civil discourse. The series is brought to you in association with Easton Public Library, Newtown’s C.H. Booth Library, Ridgefield Library, Weston Public Library, The League of Women Voters of Ridgefield and the League of Women Voters of Northern Fairfield County.

Project LIT Like Fire

Calling all 6th - 12th graders! Join us for our first chapter meeting of 2021 - 2022! This meeting's book is Black Brother, Black Brother by Jewell Parker Rhodes. Stop by the Circulation Desk to reserve your copy today! Registration is appreciated.

Sometimes, 12-year-old Donte wishes he were invisible. As one of the few black boys at Middlefield Prep, most of the students don't look like him. They don't like him either. Dubbing him "Black Brother," Donte's teachers and classmates make it clear they wish he were more like his lighter-skinned brother, Trey.
When he's bullied and framed by the captain of the fencing team, "King" Alan, he's suspended from school and arrested for something he didn't do.
Terrified, searching for a place where he belongs, Donte joins a local youth center and meets former Olympic fencer Arden Jones. With Arden's help, he begins training as a competitive fencer, setting his sights on taking down the fencing team captain, no matter what.
As Donte hones his fencing skills and grows closer to achieving his goal, he learns the fight for justice is far from over. Now Donte must confront his bullies, racism, and the corrupt systems of power that led to his arrest.
Build community! Spark conversation! Inspire action!

Agent Sonya: Moscow's Most Daring Wartime Spy by [Ben Macintyre]

Stop by the circulation desk for a copy of October's selection: Agent Sonya by Ben MacIntyre

This true-life spy story is a masterpiece about the woman code-named "Sonya." Over the course of her career, she was hunted by the Chinese, the Japanese, the Nazis, MI5, MI6, and the FBI--and she evaded them all. Her story reflects the great ideological clash of the twentieth century--between Communism, Fascism, and Western democracy--and casts new light on the spy battles and shifting allegiances of our own times.

Creative Writing Workshop

Find your story and begin – A Creative Writing Non-fiction Workshop

Many of us have a story inside of us that needs to find a way to the outside.  Whether you want to write personal essay, family history, or begin a memoir, this workshop will inspire you to start.  Based on the concept of generative writing, over 5 weeks, Ellen will guide you to get the heart of your story and dig deep enough to find your voice and a story that resonates with the universal human experience.

Life since 2020 has been unsettling and lead us to introspection.  Putting our stories into words can be cathartic and, when well told, a gift to others.  Please bring your creativity and stories to a workshop that could set you on a course to more rewarding writing.

Ellen O’Donnell is an MFA candidate at Western Connecticut State University and teaches an undergraduate writing class, The Creative Process and Writing.

Series of 5 Wednesdays: October 6,13,20,27 & November 3. You must be able to attend all sessions.

Creative Writing Workshop

Find your story and begin – A Creative Writing Non-fiction Workshop Many of us have a story inside of us that needs to find a way to the outside.
