Women and War

Please join us for a presentation by the Connecticut Women's Hall of Fame:

Women have been involved in military conflicts from the beginning of time; some as warriors, some as spies and others who made the munitions or simply called for peace.  Connecticut women are among the finest and bravest who have stood for their cause – sometimes defying gender norms, and often without the recognition they deserved.  CWHF Inductees prove that women are just as tough as men and will inspire others to shatter gender barriers. Learn about a teenager who helped save Danbury during the Revolutionary War, how Harriet Beecher Stowe sowed the seeds of conflict leading to the Civil War, and how Margaret Bourke-White’s photography brought civilians face to face with the war front for the first time.

Please register online at www.cheshirelibrary.org or call 203-272-2245, ext. 4.

Cheshire Art League: Abstract Art

Noted area artist Elizabeth Gourlay will be demonstrating techniques for creating abstract art.

For over 20 years, Elizabeth Gourlay has developed a practice that, at its heart, is concerned with exploring and developing the possibilities of color and form.  Employing a wide range of color palettes from nearly monochromatic to highly polychromatic, her work consistently and rigorously examines ways to broaden the scale of color interaction and expression.

After a fellowship at the Yale/Norfolk Summer School of Music and Art, Elizabeth went on to receive a BA with First Class Honors from Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland and an MFA in Painting from Yale University School of Art. She has been awarded several grants and fellowships, including two Individual Artist Grants from the Connecticut Commission on the Arts. Elizabeth shows her work nationally and internationally, most notably at The Drawing Center, MASS MoCA, The National Academy and School of Fine Arts, The Cummings Arts Center at Connecticut College, The Hecksher Museum and the Widener Gallery at Trinity College.

Radium Girls

The incredible true story of the young women exposed to the “wonder” substance of radium and their brave struggle for justice.

Please join us as we welcome KATE MOORE, the author of "Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women" who is coming from England to do a U.S. promotional tour of the paperback version of her non-fiction bestseller. Moore is a New York Times, USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author; in 2015, she directed a critically acclaimed play about the Radium Girls called These Shining Lives.

As World War I raged across the globe, hundreds of young women toiled away at the radium-dial factories, where they painted clock faces with a mysterious new substance called radium. Assured by their bosses that the luminous material was safe, the women themselves shone brightly in the dark, covered from head to toe with the glowing dust. With such a coveted job, these shining girls were considered the luckiest alive—until they began to fall mysteriously ill. As the fatal poison of the radium took hold, they found themselves embroiled in one of America's biggest scandals and a groundbreaking battle for workers' rights.

Bookclubs are encouraged to attend. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing. Registration required. Please register online at www.cheshirelibrary.org or call 203-272-2245, ext. 4.This program is funded by the Friends of Cheshire Public Library.

As the fatal poison of the radium took hold, they found themselves embroiled in one of America's biggest scandals and a groundbreaking battle for workers' rights.

Climate Change Communication Challenges and Opportunities

Ever wonder what people from Wyoming think about climate change?  From Atlanta, or Alaska?  How different are the views of others from your own?  The Yale Program on Climate Change Communication (YPCCC) and the Center for Climate Change Communication at George Mason University surveyed over 18,000 Americans during the past decade in an effort to understand how different people perceive climate change. These scientists have discovered that opinions can be broken down into six distinct groups. All of these groups have different views about the problem, its seriousness, and its consequences, and each responds differently to climate change solutions. In order to have a truly rewarding conversation, it is important to understand the views of those unlike your own and how we can find goals that we have in common. This talk will focus less on the scientific details of climate change and more on the key ideas that we must engage as this topic becomes critical in the coming years. Presenter Jennifer Marlon, Ph. D. is an Associate Research Scientist at Yale’s School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication (YPCCC).  We hope that you can join us!

Please register online or call 203-272-2245, ext. 4.

The Life and Gardens of BEATRIX FARRAND

Beatrix Farrand was the most successful female landscape architect in early 20th century America. Six-time Emmy-award winning filmmaker Karyl Evans, a trained landscape designer in her own right, spent 3 years making a documentary on this remarkable woman with the goal of bringing Farrand to a wider audience. Her compelling film chronicles the life of Beatrix Farrand, the niece of Edith Wharton, who grew up in the privileged world of the East Coast elite and fought through the challenges of working in a male-dominated profession to design over 200 landscape commissions during her remarkable 50-year career.

The documentary takes viewers on an inspiring journey across the country exploring her personal story and many of her most spectacular gardens, including Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C.; the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden at the New York Botanical Garden; the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden in Bar Harbor, Maine; and her California gardens.

Karyl Evans will introduce her film The Life and Gardens of BEATRIX FARRAND and discuss how it came to be produced.  The 40-minute film will be screened, followed by a discussion and question and answer period.

This program is co-sponsored by the Cheshire Garden Club and the Friends of the Cheshire Public Library.

Thru Hiking the Appalachian Trail

Those who attend this program will be treated to a modern day adventure. Sam Ducharme set out on a 2180 mile, 14 state backpacking trip from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Mt. Katahdin Maine. During his six month journey he documented the rugged beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, the wildlife, the hardships encountered on the trail, as well as the people, culture and humanity at its finest. Come join him as he takes you through the trail towns, over the mountaintops and through the backcountry. The images and stories will leave you with a renewed awe of the beauty of our country and its people.  See his gear, how he cooked, and hear what it is like sleeping in a hammock for six months through three seasons.

You will also hear how Sam returned to the trail the following year, connecting with aspiring Thru Hikers, paying it forward, and his return to the summit of Katahdin one year later.

Sam Ducharme is a retired K9 Officer and is a lifelong resident of Connecticut. He has two adult sons, both serving in the United States Air Force. As an avid outdoorsman, and finding the empty-nest, Sam decided to buy a backpack and a plane ticket to Georgia. From there, he started walking north. With no prior backpacking experience, he learned on the trail. Gear, trail nutrition, enduring the elements, and the logistics involved in a long distance backpacking trip were hard lessons. After 20 years working within Connecticut’s prisons, the search for a positive recharge resulted in a life-changing journey.

Sponsored by Cheshire Planning Department and Cheshire Public Library.   Funded by Friends of the Cheshire Public Library.  Please register online or call 203-272-2245, ext. 4.
