Make History - Make Art

Are you ready for our weekly Learning Challenge

These at-home Weekly Learning Challenges are designed by staff to excite and engage kids of all ages this summer.

The Weekly Challenge for the week of Monday 8/10 - Sunday 8/16 is:

Make History - Make Art

Alicia Herman from The Umbrella Arts Center will lead a free drawing workshop on Zoom for kids in 2nd - 5th grades. Students will learn about iconic posters involved in political movements including Rosie the Riveter, Uncle Sam's Army Recruitment Poster, and Shepard Fairey’s Make Art Not War. They will learn how to use bold designs to create a poster of their own, documenting their experience in this pivotal time. This class gives kids a creative outlet and place where their ideas and experiences are visible and valued.  Student designed posters will be archived by the Concord Free Public Library and preserved to be shared with generations to come, as part of the Chronicling Concord through Covid-19 initiative. This workshop is offered in partnership with The Umbrella Arts Center.

On Monday Aug 17, you'll have a chance to join us in a Zoom meeting to show off your art work! Register in advance for the Zoom link.

The Practice of Presence (Main)

Explore simple mindful wellness practices that settle the mind, honor the body and enhance overall well-being. Together, we’ll examine the path toward freedom from stress and experience the power of the pause in a time of crisis. Lara Wilson, founder of Concord’s non-profit mindful wellness collaborative, Be Well Be Here, will share ways to integrate mindfulness into daily life through meditation and movement tailored to your natural way of BEing. Free and open to ALL!

Bio

Lara JK Wilson, MA, GMCS, a 35-year meditator and award-winning short story writer, devotes her life to exploring the intersection of personal narrative and mindful well-being. Twenty Neglected Masterpieces of Classic Cinema and Why They Are Good for You

The Trial (1962), Dir. Orson Wells

Join Randall Warniers for a talk on Twenty Neglected Masterpiece of Classic Cinema and why they are good for you. The talk will take place via Zoom.

Description

The history of English-language cinema from the silent era to the 1960s is rich with magnificent masterpieces. Many of these masterpieces are well known, but many others—for a variety of reasons—have been neglected over the years and are less well known. This one-hour talk (on Zoom) will discuss some of these neglected films and highlight their importance and value. Some of these neglected films are by famous directors, including D.W. Griffith, Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles, Frank Capra, and David Lean. Others were briefly popular and then forgotten in the rush of new releases and changing moviegoing tastes. Still others are off-beat personal projects or films that never found an audience. All of them are brilliant and worthy of viewing. We won’t watch any movies during the talk, but attendees will be able to download a pdf summary of the selected films as a guide for future viewing on DVD or streaming services.

Virtual Poetry at the Library Series: Tommye Blount & Nathan McClain

Poetry at the Library presents Tommye Blount & Nathan McClain

A Cave Canem alumnus, Tommye Blount is the author of Fantasia for the Man in Blue (Four Way Books, 2020), a long anticipated debut collection praised for its brilliantly orchestrated chorus of distinct, unforgettable voices that speak to the experience of the black, queer body as a site of desire and violence. For Literary Hub he recalls the book’s inception: in one month while walking for exercise in the early morning hours being stopped twice by the Novi police for looking suspicious. Blount also authored What Are We Not For (Bull City press, 2016). A graduate from Warren Wilson College, he has been the recipient of a fellowship from Kresge Arts in Detroit and the John Atherton scholarship from Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference. His work has been featured in Magma, New England Review, Academy of American Poets’ Poem-a-Day, Ecotone, Ninth Letter, Kenyon Review, and elsewhere. Born and raised in Detroit, he now lives in Novi, Michigan.

Nathan McClain is the author of Scale (Four Way Books, 2017), a fierce and unflinching look at the bonds between father and son. From Superman’s Fortress of Solitude to Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks, at koi ponds and outside Eden, these poems search for answers to the question “how do we reckon with the past?” Discover more about this powerful, assured new voice in his Mentor & Muse and Woven Tale Press interviews. McClain is a recipient of fellowships from Sewanee Writers' Conference, The Frost Place, Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, and a graduate of the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson.  His poems and prose have recently appeared or are forthcoming in Poetry Northwest, Green Mountains Review, The Common, The Critical Flame, Poem-a-Day, and Zocalo Public Square.  He teaches at Hampshire College.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Concord Free Public Library

What is Racism?

Wee the People, a Boston-based social justice project will host a workshop designed for 2nd - 5th graders about racism.

Kids notice a LOT -- including skin color. They sense that it matters, and they have questions about how and why. Together we will explore how racism isn’t just one thing, but a system with many parts working together. Through activities, kids will learn how they can help disrupt and topple these systems.

Wee The People (WTP) is a Boston-based social justice project launched in 2015 by two Black mothers. WTP organizes free, interactive workshops and events that explore activism, resistance, and social action through the visual and performing arts: music, dance/movement, theater, graphic arts, spoken word, and storytelling.
