Films at Fowler Continues in the Summer with Summer Art House

We are continuing the Films at Fowler program in the summer months with six more movies and discussion dates. The new theme for the summer is Summer Art House, and the six movies are provocative, surprising, fun, and independent in spirit. There is even a sci-fi movie and a neglected American Western! These six movies are sleepers that don’t get as much attention as big budget features, and you will be challenged and entertained by them. Please watch—on your own time schedule—the selected movies on Kanopy, a free streaming service available to Library patrons. We will then gather on Zoom on scheduled evenings for a lively movie discussion.

The Assistant (2019)
Discussion Date: Wednesday, June 23, 7:00 p.m.

A young staffer (Julia Garner) at a successful New York movie production company must endure the demeaning demands of a fast-moving company culture. Also starring Matthew Macfadyen.

Please watch The Assistant on Kanopy before the discussion.

To register for the discussion and receive a Zoom link, send an email to randall.warniers@gmail.com.

This discussion is sponsored by the Friends of the Concord Free Public Library.

Shifting Gears: The Blunt Truth About Marijuana and Driving

Teens - join us on Wednesdays at 4 pm for a free series hosted by AAA to learn about driving safety on July 14, July 21 and July 28. Come to one, two or all three workshops.

The first program is designed to educate high school students on the risks of driving while impaired by marijuana. Attitudes about the use of marijuana have shifted in recent years. Marijuana is now prescribed for medicinal purposes and the legalization or decriminalization of recreational marijuana in many states resulted in greater societal acceptance of the drug’s use.  This curriculum also intends to correct misconceptions about marijuana’s potential risks to teenagers.

Distracted Driving

Teens - join us on Wednesdays at 4 pm for a free series hosted by AAA to learn about driving safety on July 14, July 21 and July 28. Come to one, two or all three workshops.

This program is designed to help teens understand the risks of distractions. You'll get tips to avoid becoming a distracted driver. "Drivers spend more than half their time focused on things other than driving" — AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

Every day, motorists who read or send a text while driving take their eyes off the road for up to 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that's like driving the entire length of a football field with your eyes shut. Texting - along with other activities like phone calls, eating, drinking, setting your GPS or working your car's entertainment system - takes your mind and your eyes off the road.
