Friendly Conversation with the Friends of CFPL: Your Library Story

The Friends of the Concord Free Public Library are pleased to offer Friendly Conversation, an opportunity for local residents to keep in touch via Zoom during this time of social distancing. The group will meet at noon on Wednesdays. Each 45-minute session begins with a “mixer” activity to stimulate conversation and communication.

A couple of days ago a woman walked down the library steps and declared, “That was my first trip inside the library.” When asked how it felt, she replied, “Great!” What great stories do you have to share from your personal experiences in a library – be it Concord or any other library? For many, the  library is a place of community, learning, and comfort. Let’s celebrate this special space together.

Please register below for the Zoom link.

Author Talk: Dr. Bernice Lerner, author of All the Horrors of War

Please join author Dr. Bernice Lerner for a discussion of her book All the Horrors of War: A Jewish Girl, a British Doctor, and the Liberation of Bergen-Belsen. The talk will take place via Zoom on Sunday, December 6 at 4:30 p.m.

Dr. Bernice Lerner is the former dean of adult learning at Hebrew College and a senior scholar at Boston University's Center for Character and Social Responsibility.

All the Horrors of War follows Glyn Hughes, a high-ranking British officer, and Rachel Genuth, a teenager from the Hungarian provinces, as they navigate their respective forms of hell during the final, brutal year of World War II. Their stories converge before the war’s end, in Bergen-Belsen, where Hughes finds himself responsible for an unprecedented situation: 25,000 of 60,000 war-ravaged inmates are in need of immediate hospitalization. Rachel is among those at death’s door. Their narratives tell a larger story—about the suffering of the victims and the struggles of liberators who strove to save lives, about the human capacity for fortitude and redemption.

Twenty Classic Christmas Movies and Why They Are Good for You, a talk by Randall Warniers

Christmas movies are a wonderful part of the holiday season. We all have our favorites, and we look forward to seeing them every year. This talk on Zoom will discuss twenty important Christmas movies, many of them popular and well known and many of them surprise discoveries. The films will include American film classics from the studio era and selected films from England, France, Mexico, Sweden, and Finland. They all have the same purpose—bringing a measure of joy, inspiration, humor, delight, and Christmas spirit to holiday viewers. We won’t watch any of the films during the talk, but all are available either on DVD or through a streaming service. Every attendee will receive a link to download a list of the twenty selected films for future reference and viewing.

Virtual Poetry at the Library Series: Steven Cramer & Joyce Peseroff

Please register here for the Zoom link!

Steven Cramer reads from his sixth collection, Listen (MadHat Press, 2020),  lucid, smart portrayals of  the “darker corners” of despair through scores of illuminating juxtapositions.  Experimenting with many verse forms to give shape to the mind’s restless shifts and associations—sometimes absurdly funny, bracingly honest, and always sharp in thought and craft—the lyric testimony of Listen reaffirms the indispensable, if fragile, consolations of art.  Cramer’s previous books of poetry are The Eye that Desires to Look Upward (1987), The World Book (1992), Dialogue for the Left and Right Hand (1997), Goodbye to the Orchard ( 2004)—winner of the 2005 Sheila Motton Prize from the New England Poetry Club and named a 2005 Honor Book in Poetry by the Massachusetts Center for the Book—and Clangings (2012). His poems and criticism have appeared in numerous literary journals, including  The Atlantic Monthly, Field, Kenyon Review, The Nation, The New Republic, The Paris Review, Ploughshares, and Poetry, as well as in several poetry anthologies. He has taught at Bennington College, Boston University, M.I.T., and Tufts University; and he founded and now teaches in the Low-Residency MFA Program in Creative Writing at Lesley University.

Joyce Peseroff  reads from her sixth collection, Petition (Carnegie Mellon University Press, 2020). From privilege at a gas station to fraud in a memorial grove, Peseroff follows the faults of indifference and division that crack our impulses toward mercy and love. She nests fragmented tales of the overheard and overlooked—lonely widowers, a lost hiker, predatory trees, an angry jury—in poems that bring a formal restlessness to common speech. With wit and compassion, Petition renders the tense joys and vivid griefs of mortal and moral experience in the luminous moment when the ordinary becomes singular. Peseroff edited Robert Bly: When Sleepers Awake, The Ploughshares Poetry Reader, and Simply Lasting: Writers on Jane Kenyon. Her fifth book of poems, Know Thyself, was designated a “must read” by the 2016 Massachusetts Book Award. Recent poems and reviews appear in American Journal of Poetry, ConsequenceOn the SeawallMassachusetts Review, PlumeSalamander, and on the website The Woven Tale Press. She directed and taught in UMass Boston’s MFA Program in its first four years. Currently she blogs on writing and literature at her website and writes a poetry column for Arrowsmith Press.
