Fair Housing Protections in Rhode Island: Keeping Us Safely Housed
6:30 PM

Fair Housing laws protect us all from discrimination related to the many identities we have as people. First passed in April 1968 as part of the Civil Rights Movement, it sought to ensure the ability of Black Americans to be able to live in neighborhoods that were previously racially segregated—whether by law or practice. Since then, Fair Housing laws across the country have expanded protections as our society has sought to recognize the many diversities of humanity. Rhode Island has some of the most inclusive protections in the United States, including the newly added Source of Income. This past year, the COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the critical importance for all of us to be safely housed, both for personal and public health safety.

Join us on Crowdcast on Tuesday, April 27 at 6:30pm as we celebrate the 53 rd anniversary of this landmark legislation to ensure the right to live without fear of discrimination and to find and keep housing safely.

Co-sponsored by Cranston Public Library, OneCranston Health Equity Zone, and SouthCoast Fair Housing. Featuring Housing Affordability information from HousingWorks RI at Roger Williams University

Panelists:

Alex West, Attorney, SouthCoast Fair Housing
Jeannine Schoos, Board Member, SouthCoast Fair Housing
Sherry Diaz, Vice President, Social Services, CCAP
Moderated by City Council Member John Donegan, Ward 3

I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid

This literary thriller introduces its readers to Jake and his girlfriend (her name is left unrevealed) as they drive to Jake’s parents’ secluded farm. When an unplanned detour takes the couple off course, what does this mean for their relationship? One reviewer calls this “an addictive metaphysical investigation into the nature of identity.”

Reading in the Hall Book Discussion
7:00 PM - 8:15 PM

ThiThe beekeeper of Aleppo book covers month we are discussing The beekeeper of Aleppo : a novel / Christy Lefteri

"Nuri is a beekeeper; his wife, Afra, an artist. They live a simple life, rich in family and friends, in the beautiful Syrian city of Aleppo--until the unthinkable happens. When all they care for is destroyed by war, they are forced to escape. But what Afra has seen is so terrible she has gone blind, and so they must embark on a perilous journey through Turkey and Greece towards an uncertain future in Britain. As Nuri and Afra travel through a broken world, they must confront not only the pain of their own unspeakable loss, but dangers that would overwhelm the bravest of souls. Above all, they must journey to find each other again. Moving, powerful, and beautifully written, The Beekeeper of Aleppo brings home the idea that the most ordinary of lives can be completely upended in unimaginable ways." -- Provided by publisher.

Reading in the Hall Book Discussion is taking place via Zoom on the last Wednesday of each month. The discussion is facilitated by one of our librarians. You may request the book on your own or through our web form. You MUST register through the link to get the Zoom link for the meeting, though!
