Classic Film: The Band Wagon (1953)

Classic Films with Philip Harwood

All Classic Films at Benevolent Hall at 1 p.m.

The Band Wagon (1953)                      Friday, October 4

Location: Benevolent Hall

Tony Hunter, a famous singer/dancer movie star, is feeling all washed up. His old friends Lily and Les Martin have an idea for a funny little Broadway show, and Tony agrees to do it. Things begin to get out of hand, when bigshot "artistic" director/producer/star Jeffrey Cordova joins the production, proclaiming it's a modernistic Faust. He insists on hiring a prima ballerina, Gabrielle Gerard, to star opposite Tony, and it's hate at first sight. The show is doomed by pretentiousness. Yet romance, a "let's put on a show" epiphany, and a triumphant opening are waiting in the wings. Stars Fred Astaire, Cyd Charisse, Nanette Fabray and Oscar Levant.

Lunch 'n Books Program

Killers of the Flower Moon:
The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI
by David Grann
Thursday, October 24 at 1 p.m.
Speaker: James Coll

Location:

SAMANEA (The Former Source Mall)

1504 Old Country Road, Westbury NY 11590

Named a best book of the year by Wall Street Journal, The Boston Globe, San Francisco Chronicle, GQ, Time, Newsday, Entertainment Weekly, Time Magazine, NPR’s Maureen Corrigan, NPR’s “On Point,” Vogue, Smithsonian, Cosmopolitan, Seattle Times, Bloomberg, Lit Hub’s “Ultimate Best Books,” Library Journal, Paste, Kirkus, Slate.com and Book Browse.

In the 1920s, after oil was discovered beneath their land, the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Indian nation in Oklahoma.  Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off. Many of those investigating the murders were assassinated. The FBI took up the investigation, and badly bungled the case. In desperation, the young J. Edgar Hoover, turned to a former Texas Ranger named Tom White. White put together an undercover team, including one of the only American Indian agents in the bureau. Together, with the Osage, they began to expose one of the most chilling conspiracies in American history.

Tod Browning - The Crown Prince of the Cinematic Macabre

Friday, October 25

Tod Browning was once one of Hollywood's golden directors during the silent era of motion pictures. He helped make a star of Lon Chaney, Sr. by collaborating on a series of film noir styled crime films for MGM. He was recruited by Universal pictures for Dracula (1931). But his career plummeted after he directed the notorious Freaks (1932) which went on to horrify and upset movie patrons for decades. But what was the story behind this man and his increasingly disturbing motion pictures? Join me for a psychological introspection on one of the masters of the macabre, Tod Browning.

Rated: Not Applicable                            Running Time: Approximately 1 hr. 30 min.

Where the Crawdads Sing
by Delia Owens
Tuesday, October 29 at 7:30 p.m.

Location: East Meadow Jewish Center

For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So, in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life--until the unthinkable happens.

Invoke

Invoke

Sunday, November 3 at 2 p.m.

Reservations open: Tuesday, October 22

Location:

SAMANEA (The Former Source Mall)

1504 Old Country Road, Westbury NY 11590

Described as “not classical…but not not-classical” (David Srebnik, SiriusXM Classical Producer), Invoke continues to successfully dodge even the most valiant attempts at genre classification. The multi-instrumental band’s other ‘not-nots’ encompass traditions from across America, including bluegrass, Appalachian fiddle tunes, jazz, and minimalism.  Invoke weaves all of these styles together to create truly individual music written by and for the group. Winners of the Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition in New York, where they were named “New Music/New Places” Ensemble.

This promises to be a truly unique experience for EMPL patrons. Reservations open on Tuesday, October 22, online at eastmeadow.info, or call the Public Relations office, at 794-2570, ext. 560.

The Only Woman in the Room:
A Novel by Marie Benedict
Wednesday, November 20 at 1 p.m.
Moderator: Jane Shapiro

LOCATION: SAMANEA (The Former Source Mall)

1504 Old Country Road, Westbury NY 11590

Her beauty almost certainly saved her from the rising Nazi party, and led to marriage with an Austrian arms dealer. Underestimated in everything else, she overheard the Third Reich’s plans while at her husband’s side, understanding more than anyone would guess. She devised a plan to flee in disguise from their castle, and the whirlwind escape landed her in Hollywood. She became Hedy Lamarr, screen star.  She kept a secret more shocking than her heritage or her marriage: she was a scientist. And she knew a few secrets about the enemy. She had an idea that might help the country fight the Nazis...if anyone would listen to her.  A powerful novel based on the incredible true story of the glamour icon and scientist, whose groundbreaking invention revolutionized modern communication.
