Family Simple Cooking: Lavender Cookies

Easy Family Cooking with the Baking Coach

Lavender Cookies for Mother’s Day (Kit program)

Monday, May 10 at 7 p.m.

Register at www.eastmeadow.info or call us at 794-2570 ask for Programming. We will then email the ZOOM link to you on the morning of the program.

Lavender is a wonderful herb to use in your baking.  These cookies are very special and a perfect gift for Mother’s Day.

When you register, please double check your email and your house address.

Lavender Shortbread Cookie Recipe:

Yield: 28 cookies

Here is what you need:

Dough:
1 stick unsalted butter, softened
½ cup granulated sugar
1 large egg room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups flour + extra for rolling
¼ teaspoon salt

Topping:
2 teaspoons lavender
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon milk

Here is how you do it:
In a bowl, cream together butter and sugar; add in egg and extract, mix. Slowly poor in flour and salt. Start with using a rubber spatula and then form dough with your hands.
Turn dough out to a lightly floured surface, knead slightly, and shape into a 14-inch log. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill for 1 hour. While dough is chilling: In a mini-chop or resealable bag, place the topping ingredients. Pulse a few times in the mini-chop, or if using the resealable bag, press to release the lavender flavor into the sugar. This process can be done in advance a day or two before as well.
Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees. Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper; set aside.
Pour contents of the lavender sugar out on to a piece of parchment or wax paper. Remove dough from fridge. Brush short bread dough with 1 tablespoon milk and roll dough firmly into the lavender sugar.
Cut into 28 ½ inch disks, placing each cookie cut side up about 1 ½ inches apart on the baking sheets (fitting 14 in each tray). Place in oven using top and middle rack and rotate trays mid-way through the baking process. Bake for 18 – 20 minutes or until very pale golden color. Cookies will look dry.
Remove from oven and cool on trays until cool enough to pick up. Store at room temperature cookies in an airtight container.
Enjoy!

Black Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crow explores the struggle for full citizenship and racial equality that unfolded in the 50 years after the Civil War. When slavery ended in 1865, a period of Reconstruction began, leading to such achievements as the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments to the Constitution. By 1868, all persons born in the United States were citizens and equal under the law. But efforts to create an interracial democracy were contested from the start.

Wednesday, May 19 at 1 p.m.

Register at www.eastmeadow.info or call us at 794-2570 ask for Programming. We will then email the ZOOM link to you on the morning of the program.

From the earliest days of television, making people laugh was formats like the sitcom and the comedy/variety show moved to television in the late 1940s, joined a few years later by the medium’s own innovation, the late night comedy talk show. For

the next seven decades, these three formats dominated the airwaves, led by brilliant comedians such as Sid Caesar, Jackie Gleason, Johnny Carson, Carol Burnett, Gilda Radner, and Jerry Seinfeld. This presentation will survey the extraordinary landscape of American TV comedy, examining how comedy changed from the vaudeville shtick of Milton Berle and the slapstick artistry of Lucille Ball to the social satire of Saturday Night Live and the self-reflexive absurdities of David Letterman and The Simpsons.

There are 80 spaces available.

This vibrant singer takes her audience on a "musical odyssey" by engaging them through several genres, such as standards, classic soul, Broadway, contemporary, and foreign language. By the time the show is over, there is a sense of invigoration. She brings the American Songbook to life by renewing your memories of a bygone era, and restoring your faith in the power of music.
