Opening Reception: The Art of Theodora Zavala
For the Month of February
Sunday, February 5 at 1:30 PM
“I paint what I feel is the essence of my subject. When painting portraits , I try to capture the expression, keeping the proportions for a true likeness in mind. When painting still lifes or landscapes, I like to show a different viewpoint or angle that leaves the viewer unsettled.”
Theodora has exhibited and received awards for her artwork in shows at Queens College, the Broome Street Gallery in Soho, the East Meadow Library, and various art leagues on Long Island. She has displayed her work at The Barnes Gallery in Garden City and J. Pocker in Manhasset. Most recently she received awards at The Art Guild, the National Art League, The Suburban Art League and the East Meadow Library in juried shows. She is a member of the National Art League, the Art League of Nassau County, the Suburban Art League, The Art Guild, Guild Hall, Mills Pond Gallery and recently joined the National League of American Pen Women. She studied pastel portraits with Master Pastelist, Dan Slapo, PSA; oil portraits with Rob Silverman and oil landscapes with Howard Rose.
Theodora is also an avid photographer. Her use of lighting and composition is not only evident in her photographs but also in her paintings. She likes to create drama in her compositions by placing her subjects in a setting.
“It is not just a landscape but a complete composition that creates a mood, mystery and tension.”
Lately I am concentrating on transparencies. I am creating my still life paintings using glass, water, cellophane and ice. I love seeing what happens with the light, how the colors and shapes change in the composition, and I challenge myself to reproduce what I see using oil paint. I feel that this gives my paintings a different dimension. I hope that my paintings engage the viewer to look at all the changes in light and transparencies that are happening in the composition.

Chromic Duo (Hybrid)
Sunday, February 19 at 2 p.m.
Register at www.eastmeadow.info or by calling 516-794-2570 option 3.
Registration begins Monday, February 6
Please state if you are coming in-person or virtually.
Chromic Duo, Lucy Yao and Dorothy Chan, are grand prize-winners at the Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT) and Concert Artists Guild (CAG). Chromic Duo blends classical music, toy piano, and electronics into genre fluid performances and installations. Inspired by the small wonders of the everyday, they compose soundworlds inspired by the multitudes as Third-Culture-Kids discovering their voice within the vast Asian American diaspora. Their work often blurs the lines between film, VR, and AR, but the heart of their work remains constant: to create an intimacy and sense of wonder in their music that unravels the story of self-discovery and passion for connecting the dots between grief and joy, belonging and displacement, and creating community in boundary pushing performances and web-based experiences.
Recent highlights include partnering with Welcome to Chinatown to feature AAPI business owners and artists in an immersive soundwalk in NYC’s Chinatown, and partnering with the National Gallery in Washington DC, the New York Philharmonic’s Education Program, and the Baryshnikov Arts Center. Over the next two seasons, we are honored to be Innovators-in-Residence at Purdue University and collaborate with the PU team to develop and launch the StairWELL project, an interactive sculpture installation that explores the intersection of art, tech, and wellness.

About Physicist Lise Meitner (In-person)
With Ed Sierra
Friday, March 3 at 1 p.m.
Register at www.eastmeadow.info or by calling 516-794-2570 option 3.
In 1938, Lise Meitner, who was Jewish, was forced to flee Germany for Sweden. She worked at Manne Siegbahn's institute in Stockholm with Otto Hahn, but with little support, partially due to Siegbahn's prejudice against women in science. Their experiments provided the evidence for nuclear fission. In February 1939, Meitner published the physical explanation for the observations and, with her nephew, physicist Otto Frisch, named the process nuclear fission. In 1944, Hahn was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his research into fission, but Meitner was ignored, partly because Hahn downplayed her role ever since she left Germany. The Nobel mistake, never acknowledged.
This program is funded by ASTC’s, If/Then project, on Gender equity.
