Poets of the Prairie: Popular Folk Artists of the 20th Century Concert

“Poets of the Prairie” concert combines songs, stories and vintage guitars to examine the cultural impact of folksingers, songwriters and recording artists from the Great Plains of North America who were popular in the 20th Century. These singers include Americans Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Phil Ochs, Goebel Reeves, Jimmy Webb and Jimmie Davis, as well as Canadians Buffy Sainte-Marie, Ian Tyson, Gordon Lightfoot and others. In addition to singing vintage songs, Ken Lelen plays vintage acoustic guitars for an authentic, back-in-the-day sound. Made by Gibson, Martin, Oscar Schmidt, Regal, Larson, Weymann and other U.S. firms, they produce music that is striking for its character, tone and sustain without the use of pick-ups or electronic gimmicks.

A reception will follow the concert. This concert is sponsored by the Friends of Edith Wheeler Memorial Library. There is no charge for admission, but donations are appreciated. Drop in! For more information call the Reference Desk at 203-452-2852.

This program sponsored by the Friends of the Library

About Ken Lelen: He has performed 2,000+ concerts for adults and seniors at libraries, churches, life-care communities, arts and culture centers, and social clubs across the East Coast in the past 25 years. His mirthful programs combine romantic, musical and historical themes with great American jazz, swing and pop music, his deft guitar work and effusive vocals.

A Murder Mystery, Family Story, & Love Letter to Strong Women Everywhere: Author Talk w/ Nina Simon

Nothing brings a family together like a murder next door.

You’re invited to join Nina Simon online as she chats about her lighthearted whodunnit about a grandmother-mother-daughter trio of amateur sleuths, Mother-Daughter Murder Night

Mother-Daughter Murder Night follows high-powered business woman Lana Rubicon. She has a lot to be proud of with her keen intelligence, impeccable taste, and the L.A. real estate empire she’s built. But when she finds herself trapped 300 miles north of the city, convalescing in a sleepy coastal town with her adult daughter Beth and teenage granddaughter Jack, Lana is stuck counting otters instead of square footage—and hoping that boredom won’t kill her before the cancer does.

About the Author: Nina Simon writes crime fiction about strong women. She is the New York Times-bestselling debut author of Mother-Daughter Murder Night. This big-hearted whodunnit is a Reese's Book Club pick and a "best of 2023" selection for Amazon, Barnes & Noble, CrimeReads, and LibraryJournal.

Adult Book Discussion

Join us once a month for some lively discussion about great books! May's book discussion will be "Horse" by Geraldine Brooks.

Publisher's Weekly.  Geraldine Brooks begins the story in 1850s Lexington, Ky., where Jarret Lewis, an enslaved boy, is the groom for a promising colt that his father, Harry, a freedman, has trained. But then the horse, Lexington, is sold and the new buyer sends him along with Jarret to a Mississippi plantation with ruinous consequences. In 1853, Lexington and Jarret end up in New Orleans, where the horse thrills the racing world, and Jarret hopes to buy his freedom.

“Brooks’ chronological and cross-disciplinary leaps are thrilling.” —The New York Times Book Review

Classics Book Club

The Classics Book Club will Alternate Classic and Modern Classic titles and will meet bi-monthly to discuss selected titles.

In Cold Blood was an instant success and is the second-best-selling true-crime book in history. Some critics consider Capote's work the original non-fiction novel In Cold Blood has been lauded for its eloquent prose, extensive detail, and triple narrative which describes the lives of the murderers, the victims, and other members of the rural community in alternating sequences.

In Cold Blood was originally published in four parts in The New Yorker and then released as a novel in 1965. In Cold Blood took six years for Capote to research and write, and it took an incredible toll on Capote, personally — so much so that he never published another book again. In Cold Blood is said to have been his undoing. The book tells the story of the murder of the Clutter family, consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Clutter and their two teenage children, Kenyon and Nancy, and the events that lead the killers to murder. The family was living in Holcomb, Kansas, and in November 1959, they were brutally killed, with no apparent motive, by Dick Hickock and Perry Smith.

Registration is required to receive Zoom information. If your library barcode is unavailable, please use your phone number in that space.

Books are available a month prior to the program and can be picked up at the Circulation Desk or via our Library-to-Go Service.

For the Love of Mars: A Human History of the Red Planet with Smithsonian Curator Matt Shindell

Mars and its secrets have fascinated and mystified humans since ancient times. Due to its vivid color and visibility, geologic kinship with Earth, and potential as our best hope for settlement, Mars embodies everything that inspires us about space and exploration. For the Love of Mars surveys the red planet's place in the human imagination, beginning with ancient astrologers and skywatchers and ending in our present moment of exploration and virtual engagement. You’re invited to come learn alongside Matt Shindell, National Air and Space Museum curator, as he introduces viewers to historical figures across eras and around the world who have made sense of this mysterious planet.

About the Author: Matthew Shindell, Ph.D., is a historian of science with a background in science studies. He is Curator of Earth and Planetary Science at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. He is responsible for the Museum’s collection of spacecraft, instruments, and other artifacts related to the exploration and study of our Earth and solar system.

Adult Book Discussion

Join us once a month for some lively discussion about great books! June's book discussion will be ‘Remarkably Bright Creatures' by Shelby Van Pelt.

Publisher's Weekly writes, "A cross-species friendship helps solve a pair of decades-old mysteries in Pelt’s whimsical if far-fetched debut. After Tova Sullivan’s husband dies, she takes a night job as janitor at an aquarium, where she enjoys talking to the sea creatures. She’s particularly fond of Marcellus, a giant octopus who shies away from most human attention. But when Tova finds Marcellus out of his tank and helps him back to safety, he becomes fond of her. Meanwhile, Cameron Cassmore comes to town looking for his long-lost father and joins Tova on the night shift, disrupting her routine. However, the two soon realize that Cameron’s mother, who disappeared after leaving him with an aunt when he was nine, and Tova’s son, who died after falling off a boat decades earlier, might have known each other. Marcellus, who lived in the sea before his capture, is the only creature who knows for sure."

Books are available a month prior to the program and can be picked up at the Circulation Desk or via our Library-to-Go service.

Registration is required to receive the Zoom link. If your library barcode is unavailable, please use your phone number in that space.
